Your Travel Guide to Dauin as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Dauin from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most convenient way to reach Dauin from Manila and other major Philippine cities is by air, flying into Dumaguete Airport (DGT). Airlines like Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific operate flights from Manila to Dumaguete, with fares typically ranging from PHP 3,000 to PHP 7,000 for a round trip, depending on booking time and promotions. The flight duration is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.

From Dumaguete Airport, you can take a taxi or a tricycle to the Dauin town proper, which is about 20-30 minutes away. From Dauin town, you can then take a local jeepney or another tricycle to reach Lipayo, where Sierra Resort powered by Cocotel is located. Alternatively, you can arrange a direct transfer from the airport to the resort for added convenience. It is highly recommended to book flight tickets well in advance, especially during peak seasons.

For those who prefer land travel, you can take a bus from Manila to Batangas port, then a ferry to Caticlan or Iloilo, and another bus and ferry combination to Dumaguete. This is a significantly longer journey, often taking over 24 hours, and is generally more suited for travelers with ample time and a desire for a more adventurous trip. Bus fares can range from PHP 1,500 to PHP 3,000 one way.

Best Time to Visit Dauin

The Philippines generally experiences a tropical climate, and Dauin is no exception. The dry season, typically from November to May, is considered the best time to visit for most travelers. During these months, you can expect sunny days with lower humidity, making it ideal for outdoor activities, beach lounging, and exploring the natural attractions of Negros Oriental.

The wet season runs from June to October, characterized by higher rainfall and increased humidity. While this period might see fewer tourists and potentially lower accommodation prices, outdoor activities can be disrupted by sudden downpours. However, for divers, the marine life remains abundant year-round, and the rain often doesn't significantly impact underwater visibility.

Food and Dining Near Dauin — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

When in Dauin, exploring the local culinary scene is a delightful part of the experience. Filipino cuisine is known for its diverse flavors, often balancing sweet, sour, and savory notes. One dish you absolutely must try is Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche. Fresh raw fish, usually tuna or tanigue, is marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili peppers, offering a zesty and refreshing taste.

Another local favorite is La Paz Batchoy, a hearty noodle soup originating from Iloilo but popular throughout the Visayas. It features a rich pork broth, noodles, and generous toppings of pork innards, shrimp, and vegetables. It’s a comforting and flavorful dish, perfect for a satisfying meal, especially on a cooler evening.

For seafood lovers, grilled fish and squid are abundant and incredibly fresh in coastal towns like Dauin. Often simply seasoned and grilled over charcoal, the natural flavors of the seafood shine through. Pair it with a side of soy sauce and calamansi for an authentic Filipino taste. Don't forget to try some local fruits like ripe mangoes and lanzones when in season.

Finally, for a sweet treat, try Halo-Halo, a popular Filipino dessert made with shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, and topped with leche flan and ube ice cream. It's a perfect way to cool down and indulge your sweet tooth after a day of exploring the beautiful province of Negros Oriental.

This was a nice place to stay as a dive resort. The in room safe, was not attached to anything, anyone could just walk out with the safe. The staff was very friendly the dive shop critter republic was the reason for my stay. Many of the people who stay here, come just for the diving with Justin the owner of critter Republic dive shop. The owners of Sierra resort should recognize this. He is making them lots of money.

very quiet and clean, yet still a convenient distance from Dumaguete. smaller with only about 50 rooms so not crowded yet well attended by very courteous staff. small beachfront area. Blacksand beach somewhat rocky. complementary breakfast is good but lunch and dinner offerings not very good. Meat was generally tough whether chicken beef or pork. Many menu items we’re not even available when requested, including fish entrées and shakes. Much of the staff has a poor understanding of English so communication can be a bit difficult. however, the management was extremely helpful sharing surrounding destinations to visit and quick to get transportation arranged. Myself and another tenant had toilet flushing problems. I had to be relocated to a different room because the toilet was not functioning. The other tenant said he had to keep calling them when the toilet would not flush because the problem was not solved. The resort is a little over 30 years old so has a late 80s Spanish Asian type of decor. well-maintained but shows a bit of age. very nice pool and central outdoor lounging area, but not in an ocean view area.

The service was so bad. We booked 4 family rooms for 2 nights and requested for 2 twin bed each rooms but when we arrive, non of our requested room is ready. We arrived about 7pm and all of us got into the room nearly 11pm. Some of my family member has to wait near the pool where it's so dark and lots of mosquitos! I also booked the hotel with breakfast but came out nothing as the resort claimed that Hotels.com forwarded the order to Expedia. It seems like the employees here do not properly handover things to their colleagues. Nobody can confirm anything, they have to keep calling their supervisors.. During check out, the Lady Manager keep saying we had 7 extra beds where in fact there's only six. She keep insisting to a point that we asked her housekeeper to count it again. They counted 6 but not even a single apologies from her! I know this is ecofriendly hotel but I didn't expect there will be "tuko" gecko in from of my door!

Excellent friendly workers, food was very good but limited. Wi-Fi wasn’t good in the room but good down stairs.

Pretty bad food on the menu. No fresh fruit and the staff struggled to find basic things like the WiFi password. The beach was not very nice. Luckily, we were spending only 1 night there.
