Your Travel Guide to Baguio City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Baguio City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

Traveling from Manila to Baguio City is a popular route for many Filipinos. The most common and economical way is by bus. Numerous bus companies operate daily trips from various terminals in Metro Manila, such as Cubao and Pasay. Bus fares typically range from PHP 700 to PHP 1,200, depending on the company and the type of service (regular or air-conditioned). The journey usually takes about 6 to 8 hours, depending on traffic conditions.

For those who prefer to fly, the nearest major airport is Clark International Airport (CRK) in Pampanga. From Clark, you can take a bus directly to Baguio City. While there are no direct flights to Baguio's own Loakan Airport, flying to Clark and then taking a bus is often faster than the entire bus journey from Manila. You can book flight tickets to Clark and then arrange your bus transfer for a seamless travel experience.

Driving your own vehicle offers flexibility. The primary route from Manila involves taking the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and then the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTE), connecting to the TPLEX and finally the MacArthur Highway leading to Baguio. Toll fees can add up, so it's wise to factor this into your budget. The drive typically takes around 5 to 7 hours without significant traffic.

Best Time to Visit Baguio City

Baguio City experiences a cooler climate year-round compared to the rest of the Philippines, making it a popular destination any time. However, the peak season, characterized by cooler temperatures and sunny days, runs from November to May. This period, especially around Christmas and the Panagbenga Festival in February, sees the highest influx of tourists.

The months from June to October constitute the rainy season. While you might encounter frequent rainfall, the city is often less crowded, and accommodation prices can be more affordable. The lush greenery is at its most vibrant during this time, and the cooler, misty atmosphere can be quite appealing to some. If you prefer fewer crowds and don't mind occasional rain, visiting during these months can offer a different, yet equally enjoyable, Baguio experience.

For a balance of pleasant weather and manageable crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder months, such as late October or early November, or late May. These periods often offer good weather without the peak season intensity, allowing for a more relaxed exploration of Baguio's attractions.

Food and Dining Near Baguio City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Baguio City is a culinary delight, offering unique flavors influenced by its highland location and cultural heritage. A must-try is the Baguio Strawberry, famously grown in the region. Enjoy them fresh, in strawberry taho, or as part of delicious strawberry shortcake and ice cream. You can find these treats at the public market or various cafes around the city.

Another local specialty is the Ube Kinampay, a purple yam jam that is rich and flavorful. It’s often used in pastries and desserts, offering a distinct taste of the Cordilleras. Look for products made with this ingredient in local pasalubong shops. The city also offers a variety of savory dishes, with many restaurants serving hearty meals perfect for the cooler climate.

Don't leave Baguio without trying the Pinikpikan, a traditional Cordilleran dish. It involves a unique preparation method that results in a tender and flavorful soup, often made with chicken and vegetables. Many local eateries and restaurants specializing in Cordilleran cuisine will feature this dish. Exploring the local food scene is a significant part of the Baguio experience for any Filipino traveler.

For those seeking comfort food, the city is also known for its hot chocolate and coffee shops, perfect for warming up on a chilly Baguio evening. Exploring the local eateries, from small carinderias to established restaurants, will provide a diverse range of flavors and culinary experiences that reflect the unique character of Baguio City.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Baguio City

Baguio City is known for its friendly and respectful local culture. When interacting with residents, a polite demeanor and a smile go a long way. It's customary to greet elders with respect. While English and Tagalog are widely understood, learning a few basic phrases in Ilocano, the dominant local dialect, can be appreciated.

Safety in Baguio City is generally good, but like any urban area, it's wise to remain aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places like the market or bus terminals. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items unnecessarily. In case of emergencies, local police can be reached at their hotline numbers, which are readily available online.

For a smoother trip, consider downloading essential apps. A navigation app like Google Maps is indispensable for getting around. Ride-hailing apps are available, though jeepneys are a very common and affordable mode of transport for many routes within the city. Weather apps are also useful for keeping track of Baguio's famously changeable climate.

Having a reliable communication app like WhatsApp or Messenger is also helpful for staying in touch with family and friends. For booking accommodations and activities, the Traveloka app is a convenient tool to have on your phone, allowing you to manage your bookings and discover new places easily.

we had a nice stay at sophia's cedar peak, our little girl loved it. emjay was a great host. he was responsive and helpful. the property's location can't be beat. it was within walking distance of everything we were interested in doing in baguio for our little girl's first time. the studio had everything we needed. basic kitchen, nice shower (it was hot and had good water pressure), and even a small dining table. what you see in the picture is what you will get. there are things to note, internet is slow (which is ok for us), the place is dated (but for us it works - we were mainly out sightseeing), the room had a smell in the beginning but after ventillating the room it solved the situation, and the room faces a wall which worked for us since it's more private. hope this helped!

I rented the hotel for my Fiancée. She said the communication was good, and everything in and around the hotel was very good. There were only 2 small/medium problems. 1. The internet kept cutting out, which made communication with my Fiancée during her stay extremely difficult. 2. The hot water was also finnicky and she couldn't get it to stay warm. Apart from this, everything I heard about the stay was fantastic! Hopefully soon the owner can get some of the minor problems fixed, as I was considering this as a stay for our honeymoon later this year, but now am not completely sure it is the best fit.

The room is clean and tidy, it feels like you are in a five star hotel. All amenities are complete and it is in the heart of Baguio. Close to everything, it is safe as well. The host is very kind and accomodating. I will recommend to family and friends and well stay there again.

we had a nice stay at sophia's cedar peak, our little girl loved it. emjay was a great host. he was responsive and helpful. the property's location can't be beat. it was within walking distance of everything we were interested in doing in baguio for our little girl's first time. the studio had everything we needed. basic kitchen, nice shower (it was hot and had good water pressure), and even a small dining table. what you see in the picture is what you will get. there are things to note, internet is slow (which is ok for us), the place is dated (but for us it works - we were mainly out sightseeing), the room had a smell in the beginning but after ventillating the room it solved the situation, and the room faces a wall which worked for us since it's more private. hope this helped!

The location was ideal for my vacation purposes. The area around the place is always crowded but it's par for the course in such areas in Baguio.

There was water leak due to heavy rain, puddle of water on the floor, it was reported to the front desk but they were unhelpful, waited for the following morning to address the problem.

The place is central, that is what I love about it. The room has a weird smell and when you open the window the AC fan of the other building is loud.
