Your Travel Guide to Puerto Princesa as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Puerto Princesa from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most convenient way to reach Puerto Princesa from Manila and other major Philippine cities is by air. Several airlines operate daily flights to Puerto Princesa International Airport (PPS). Flight durations typically range from 1 hour to 1 hour and 30 minutes. Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book flight tickets, but budget-friendly options are often available for those who plan ahead.

For travelers on a tighter budget or those who prefer a more scenic journey, land and sea travel is an option, though considerably longer. Buses from Manila to Batangas port, followed by a ferry to Puerto Princesa, can take over 24 hours. While this route is less common for direct travel to Puerto Princesa, it's part of the broader inter-island transport network.

Driving your own vehicle to Puerto Princesa is possible but involves extensive travel, typically through ferry connections for your car. The journey from Manila can take upwards of 30 hours, including ferry crossings. This option is best suited for those undertaking a comprehensive Palawan road trip and who are comfortable with long-distance driving and ferry logistics.

Best Time to Visit Puerto Princesa

The ideal time to visit Puerto Princesa is generally during the dry season, which runs from November to May. During these months, you can expect sunny skies and calmer seas, perfect for island hopping and exploring the famous Underground River. Temperatures are warm, averaging around 28-30°C, making it pleasant for outdoor activities.

The wet season, from June to October, brings occasional rainfall, which can sometimes be heavy. However, this period also sees fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices, offering a different kind of appeal for budget-conscious travelers. Even during the rainy season, tours and activities often continue, with adjustments made for weather conditions.

For a balance of good weather and manageable crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder months of November or May. These periods often provide a sweet spot, offering pleasant conditions without the peak season influx of tourists. This allows for a more relaxed exploration of Puerto Princesa’s natural beauty and cultural sites.

Food and Dining Near Puerto Princesa — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Filipino travelers visiting Puerto Princesa should not leave without trying **Kinilaw na Tanigue**. This local take on ceviche features fresh, raw tanigue fish marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili. It’s a refreshing appetizer that perfectly captures the fresh seafood bounty of Palawan, often found in local eateries and restaurants along the baywalk.

Another local delicacy to savor is **Tamilok**, a type of woodworm harvested from mangrove trees. While its appearance might be unusual, its taste is often described as briny and slightly sweet, usually served fresh with vinegar or cooked. Trying Tamilok is an adventurous culinary experience that many visitors seek out for its unique Palawan origin.

For a taste of hearty Filipino comfort food with a local twist, look for **Lumpia Ubod**. This fresh spring roll is filled with heart of palm and vegetables, often served with a sweet peanut sauce. It’s a lighter, yet satisfying option that showcases the versatility of Filipino cuisine and is a popular choice in many local dining spots.

Don't forget to try **Lato**, a type of seaweed that resembles tiny green grapes. It has a unique crunchy texture and a fresh, oceanic flavor, typically enjoyed with a simple dip of vinegar and chili. Lato is a delightful and healthy seafood option that offers a distinct taste of the Palawan coast.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Puerto Princesa

Puerto Princesa is known for its friendly locals and relaxed pace of life. When interacting, a polite greeting like "Magandang araw" (Good day) goes a long way. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for excellent service. Respecting local customs, such as dressing modestly when visiting churches or more traditional areas, is always advisable.

Safety in Puerto Princesa is generally good, but as with any travel, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings. Keep valuables secure, especially in crowded areas like markets or the baywalk. It’s recommended to use reputable transportation services and to be cautious of unsolicited offers. For emergencies, the local police hotline is typically 911.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable map application like Google Maps is indispensable for navigation. Ride-sharing apps can be useful for getting around the city, and a translation app can help bridge any language gaps, though English is widely understood. Having a local currency converter app is also practical for managing your budget.

I was there for 3 nights and only received 2 6oz bottles of water. I had to walk a very long way to office to get drinking water. The bathroom had a foul stench of urine coming up from the bathroom floor drain. It was in a location with no restaurants close by and the restaurant on site had limited choices. The pool was beautiful but had only 4 chairs and the pool was only about 2 meters deep.

Staffs are very nice and very helpful. Facilities are very clean, the room is small but very comfortable, the pool is very clean, breakfast is just very limited and not much selections, very near to Robinson’s Mall. The room should have at least small fridge to keep your drinks cold. Regrets: No hotel transportation at the airport when we arrived. Tourist Security Police help us and contacted the hotel, and responded that we didn’t make arrangement with them for pick up though we have a copy of my email sent to them June 6, 2018, 8 months before arrival. This was very frustrating that they didn’t have available driver. We ended up taking a private vehicle and paid extra $10. All contact numbers to the hotel on website are not updated, email address & phone numbers. I brought this out to the front desk and was not even aware of what was on their website.

It was alright, probably best for non-business trips since there is a swimming pool (seems shallow enough for kids). Each room was a stand-alone unit in an open area, with only a sliding glass door as your line of security. It's not soundproof so when other guests drunkenly stumble in the middle of the night, you are sure to hear them. There is Wi-Fi in the room and the common area. However, this is only fast at around 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning.

The resort was a surprisingly comfortable stay given the low cost per night. Sheets and towels were clean, the airconditioner worked well, and the bathroom had a well-functioning toilet and heater. All of the things you would expect in a hotel room were present. The staff were attentive in terms of cleaning the room, and knowledgeable and willing to help in arranging transportation and tours - this was also more convenient due to the central location of the hotel making it accessible to tricycles. Only minor problems were present in terms of the facilities; slow draining shower in one of the bathrooms, and door locks which were annoying to open and close. Portions of the included breakfast were just sufficient, but still appetizing. All in all, I would stay here again the next time I return to Puerto Princesa.

The room was quite small, but that’s ok as we didn’t spend much time in it. The staff was very friendly and helpful.

Property is ok, a little outdated. Pool location is very unnapealing, right at the front entrance next to reception

The stuff are very nice and friendly. Our front door lock just kept breaking it needs to be replace. They are helping us right away and the place is small but very clean. The blanket is very thick and the bed hurts our back too firm but all in all it’s good experience.

We enjoyed our two night stay at Southwind. Great for a stop over. One things they can improve on is door locks - our door locks from the outside but wouldn’t lock once we were inside for the night.

far from everything. rooms weren't cleaned despite us asking for them to be. toilets were less than functional. staff was indifferent. the rooms were a decent size and AC worked well (although it was pretty loud). probably wouldn't stay here again. even if it was cheap.

The staff were extremely friendly. The restaurant at the hotel, Fat Tony's, had delicious food. They had a nice pool that didn't get very crowded. Very convenient to airport. Great place to stay whether you're traveling with family or friends.

The hotel was nice but i think management can do better. We arrived early but checked in late due to lack of staff. The front desk was also the one assisting the guests to their room.

We had a great stay. The room was very clean and spacious as well as the CR. Costumer service was commendable. Pool was nice and the location was very relaxing. Will definitely recommend this to my friends who plan to go to Puerto Princesa.

Comfortable hotel with nice pool. Poor free breakfast options and no free tea in room, only coffee. Hotel wanted to charge me for 1 tea bag at the rate of buying a whole box at the supermarket. Overall, comfortable stay and clean rooms.
