Your Travel Guide to Tagbilaran City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Tagbilaran City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

Traveling to Tagbilaran City, Bohol, is most efficiently done by air. Direct flights from Manila (MNL) to Tagbilaran Airport (TAG) are frequent, with airlines like Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific offering services. Flight durations are typically around 1 hour and 15 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes. Fares can vary significantly, but booking in advance, especially outside of peak seasons, might yield prices ranging from PHP 2,500 to PHP 5,000 for a round trip. You can easily book flight tickets on Traveloka for competitive rates.

For those coming from other major Philippine cities like Cebu or Iloilo, flights to Tagbilaran are also available, though sometimes less frequent than from Manila. Alternatively, if you are in the Visayas region, you might consider a ferry from Cebu City to Tagbilaran Port, which takes approximately 2 hours. This ferry option can be a more scenic and sometimes more economical choice, depending on current promotions.

While driving directly to Tagbilaran from Luzon is not feasible due to geographical separation, inter-island travel via car is possible if you are already in the Visayas. This would involve ferry crossings for your vehicle. For most travelers, especially from Luzon, flying remains the most practical and time-efficient method to reach Tagbilaran City.

Best Time to Visit Tagbilaran City

The ideal time to visit Tagbilaran City and the rest of Bohol is generally during the dry season, which runs from December to May. During these months, you can expect sunny skies and lower chances of rain, making it perfect for exploring the island's famous attractions like the Chocolate Hills and its pristine beaches. Temperatures are warm, typically ranging from 28°C to 32°C.

The period from June to November constitutes the wet season, characterized by increased rainfall and higher humidity. While you might encounter occasional downpours, these are often short-lived, and you can still enjoy many activities. Traveling during the shoulder months, such as May or November, can offer a good balance of favorable weather and fewer crowds compared to the peak holiday season.

For travelers looking to avoid the largest crowds and potentially find better accommodation deals, visiting during the off-peak months within the dry season (e.g., January to March, excluding Chinese New Year and Holy Week) is advisable. This allows for a more relaxed exploration of Tagbilaran and Bohol's attractions.

Food and Dining Near Tagbilaran City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

When in Tagbilaran City, exploring the local culinary scene is a must for any Filipino traveler. One dish you should seek out is Kinilaw, Bohol's version of ceviche. Fresh, raw fish is marinated in vinegar, calamansi juice, onions, ginger, and chili peppers, offering a tangy and refreshing taste that perfectly complements the tropical climate.

Another local specialty to savor is Peanut Kisses, a sweet and crunchy delicacy unique to Bohol. These bite-sized treats are made from ground peanuts and flour, baked until crisp. They make for a delightful snack or pasalubong (souvenir) to share with family and friends back home. You can often find them in local markets and souvenir shops.

Don't leave Bohol without trying seafood, especially grilled fish and prawns, which are abundant and fresh. Many local eateries and restaurants in Tagbilaran and nearby coastal towns offer delicious preparations. Look for places serving La Paz Batchoy, a hearty noodle soup with pork and shrimp, which is a comforting and flavorful meal.

For a taste of something truly local, try the Calamay, a sweet and sticky delicacy made from young coconut, glutinous rice, and brown sugar, often served in a coconut shell. It’s a rich dessert or snack that embodies the sweet flavors of the Philippines. Exploring these dishes will give you a genuine taste of Bohol.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Tagbilaran City

Filipino travelers visiting Tagbilaran City will find the local culture warm and welcoming, with a strong sense of community and respect for elders. Politeness is highly valued, so using "po" and "opo" when speaking to older individuals or those in authority is a good practice. Always ask for permission before taking photos of people, especially in more traditional settings.

Safety in Tagbilaran City is generally good, but like any urban area, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings. Keep your valuables secure, especially in crowded places or public transport. It’s advisable to use reputable taxi services or ride-sharing apps for transportation. For emergencies, the local police hotline is typically 911, and the New Site CELESTINO GALLARES MEMORIAL HOSPITAL is nearby for medical assistance.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is crucial for getting around. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger are widely used. Additionally, having the Traveloka app handy will allow you to manage your bookings, discover local attractions, and find dining options easily.

Understanding basic Tagalog or Cebuano phrases can also be helpful, though English is widely spoken and understood in tourist areas. Embracing the local customs and being mindful of your surroundings will ensure a safe and enjoyable trip to Tagbilaran City and the beautiful province of Bohol.

Room was okay. But TV reception was so bad. Shower is working but water pressure is too weak. Breakfast took forever; was initially advised 20mins serving time but took total of 45mins. It's my 2nd time here so definitely disappointed.

The hotel is nice, it's close to the grocery store, it's just a walk in, it's just too low aircon, it's far from airport airport, because there is a new airport open! clean hotel and silent, nice stuff, accomodating them.

Very clean, affordable and somehow accessible to a mini mall and a local market. They even provide towels and toiletries less slippers though and you would have to pay extra if you request for extra sugar and creamer for your coffee even while already dining with them. But so far, everything was OK. Thanks Staylite.

I have stayed here with my husband for 4 days and 3 nights and the accommodation is fine, the room is clean. We have to extend our stay because my husband's schedule of going to cebu is 6:30 and the extension fee is 50php per hour. It is cheap because compared to other hotel you have to pay for 1 day. Good thing the location is near 7eleven so we can buy our needs and it is accessible.

The room is affordable and clean but the flush in the CR does not work. Air conditioning is weak too, it can't cool the room well because the aircon is too small/low power. The food taste (ordered corned beef breakfast silog meal) like metal, fresh from can. Serving is too little for the price. The pineapple juice they serve is just a powdered juice, it taste like Tang, I bet it is Tang.

The budget room that we got is perfect for an overnight stay. Or longer stay. The bed is comfy, there's cable TV, private CR, wifi and aircon - for a cheap price its worth it. Near the airport too. We also tried their breakfast budget meal - you'll get what you paid for. Even better. The hotel staff are also very nice and accommodating 😊

It's good that they provide a shuttle for us as we land to tagbilaran bohol airport. But the room they provided us has is a little bit unsatisfying. The door has a little gap from door jamb which people might see us even the door is closed. They don't even provided for us a pair of slippers. And as of 5am, we ask for breakfast, the frontdesk replied that ordering breakfast is open. As we order upon, the frontdesk replied rapidly that they cannot received any order due to many orders has reserved earlier. How come a little hotel cannot accommodate their guests’ order??? Another thing, we decided to extend our stay for another day from that hotel thru phone, the frontdesk replied that we only need to add a 1,000php. So as we go to frontdesk to pay the said amount, we’re surprised that get higher than the first said! Please train well your staffs, so they can render better service, and organized. Always wear a smile, especially in the morning time.

The location is very ideal, near the seaport going to Cebu. The staff are polite. I requested to rent a motorcycle and they call a rental service for me :)

Staff were accommodating. Room was okay but would prefer thicker blankets and firm pillows. Had miscommunications regarding day tour offer but not really a big deal for me. Overall, staying here is definitely recommendable. :)
