Your Travel Guide to Manila as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Manila from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For travelers coming from other parts of the Philippines, flying into Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila is the most common method. Major airlines like Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia offer frequent flights from key cities such as Cebu, Davao, and Iloilo. Flight durations typically range from 1 to 2 hours, with fares varying based on booking time and airline, but you can often find competitive prices by using Traveloka to book flight tickets in advance.

If you're traveling from nearby Luzon provinces, bus travel is a practical and economical option. Numerous bus terminals in Metro Manila serve routes from Northern and Southern Luzon. For example, buses from Baguio City to Manila take approximately 4-6 hours, with fares generally ranging from PHP 500-800. This allows for a scenic journey and a more budget-conscious approach to reaching the capital.

For those driving their own vehicles, major expressways connect to Metro Manila. From the North, the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) leads to Metro Manila, while the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) serves travelers from the South. Be prepared for toll fees, which vary depending on the distance traveled and the specific expressways used. Planning your route using GPS is recommended to navigate efficiently.

Best Time to Visit Manila

The ideal time to visit Manila for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which typically runs from November to April. During these months, you can expect sunny days with lower humidity, making it more comfortable for exploring the city's outdoor attractions, including the historical sites within Intramuros. Temperatures usually range from 24°C to 32°C.

The wet season, from May to October, brings frequent rainfall, often in the form of heavy afternoon downpours. While this period might see fewer tourists and potentially lower accommodation prices, it can disrupt outdoor activities. If you plan to visit during this time, it's wise to pack an umbrella and be flexible with your itinerary. Traveling during the shoulder months of November or April can offer a good balance of pleasant weather and fewer crowds.

Food and Dining Near Manila — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to Manila is complete without indulging in Adobo, the unofficial national dish. This savory and tangy stew, typically made with chicken or pork braised in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns, is a staple in Filipino households. You can find excellent versions in traditional eateries and even in hotel restaurants, offering a comforting taste of home.

Another must-try is Sinigang, a sour and savory soup that comes in various forms, most commonly with pork, shrimp, or fish. Its distinct sourness, usually derived from tamarind, is incredibly refreshing, especially on a warm day. Many local carinderias and restaurants near Intramuros serve this hearty soup, providing a flavorful and authentic experience.

For those with a sweet tooth, Halo-Halo is an iconic Filipino dessert that offers a delightful mix of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, and topped with leche flan and ube ice cream. It’s a perfect treat to cool down with after a day of sightseeing. Look for popular spots that serve this colorful and delicious concoction.

Crispy Pata, deep-fried pork knuckle, is another popular dish that offers a satisfying crunch and tender meat. Served with a soy-vinegar dipping sauce, it’s a dish meant for sharing and enjoying with rice. Many Filipino restaurants and even some hotel dining establishments offer this indulgent treat. Exploring the culinary landscape is a key part of any visit, and you can easily book attraction tours that include food stops.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Manila

Filipinos are known for their hospitality and respect for elders. When interacting with locals, using polite terms like "po" and "opo" is appreciated. It's also customary to remove your shoes before entering someone's home. Understanding and respecting these customs will enhance your interactions and overall experience in Manila.

When it comes to safety, it's always wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items. For emergencies, the national emergency hotline is 911. It's also recommended to have the contact numbers of your hotel and local authorities readily available.

To navigate Manila more easily, consider downloading essential apps. Grab is indispensable for ride-hailing and food delivery. Google Maps is crucial for navigation, while a currency converter app can be helpful for managing your budget. For communication, WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger are widely used by locals.

When exploring Intramuros, consider joining a guided walking tour or renting a bamboo bike to get a deeper understanding of the area's history and significance. These activities can be booked through various providers, and Traveloka often lists options for book attraction experiences that can enrich your visit.

Originally gave this a 1 because ...We were not able to get to your property due to the festival. Being that u knew about the festival way ahead of time, you should have contacted us much earlier than a few days before. When we called your hotel your staff advised us that we would be able to get there by using a certain bridge ( don’t know the name off hand). That was not the case as we paid for a taxi and drove for 2 hours in circles to find road closures. We’re not happy at all and it basically ruined our stay in Manila and taxi costs us $60 on top of that. We stayed here 3 weeks later and changed our review once we actually got to stay here. Very nice location and pent house restaurant for city view.

I stayed at a room that was marketed as deluxe. It was a damp, dark room without a window (my oversight there). But still the lighting was horrible, the desk had no lamp. It was the darkest room I ever stayed at a hotel. The AC vent was dirty, that and the dampness not great for allergies. Breakfast was OK and location is good. But overall a big miss.

The room was very smelly. Smelled like mildew. Pretty sure it was coming out of the air vents. Traffic was terrible, very hard to get to and from the airport partially due to road closures because of protest going on, but it sounds like it’s pretty terrible most of the time.

Friendly staff, great location with many walkable areas with a reasonable price. They also have a cute cat that hangs around outside. The rooftop restaurant is cool but you need to make a reservation if you wanna sit by the edge. Would stay here again tho
