Your Travel Guide to Moalboal as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Moalboal from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most convenient way to reach Moalboal from Manila is by flying into Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB). Numerous airlines operate daily flights from Manila (MNL) to Cebu (CEB). Flight durations are typically around 1 hour and 15 minutes. Fares can vary, but booking in advance through platforms like Traveloka can help you find competitive prices, often ranging from PHP 2,500 to PHP 5,000 for a round trip, depending on the season and booking time.

From Mactan-Cebu International Airport, your journey to Moalboal continues overland. The most common method is to take a taxi or a Grab car to the Cebu South Bus Terminal. This transfer typically costs around PHP 300-500 and takes about 45 minutes to an hour. From the bus terminal, you can board a public bus heading directly to Moalboal. These buses run frequently throughout the day.

The bus ride from Cebu City to Moalboal is a scenic journey of about 3 to 4 hours. The fare is quite affordable, usually ranging from PHP 250 to PHP 400 for a one-way ticket, depending on whether you choose air-conditioned or non-air-conditioned seating. For those who prefer a more direct and comfortable route, arranging a private van transfer from the airport or Cebu City directly to your hotel in Moalboal is also an option, though it will be more expensive.

Best Time to Visit Moalboal

Moalboal enjoys a tropical climate, meaning it's warm year-round. However, the best time to visit for optimal weather conditions is generally during the dry season, which runs from November to May. During these months, you can expect less rainfall and more sunshine, making it ideal for outdoor activities like diving, snorkeling, and exploring the coastline.

The peak tourist season often coincides with the dry months, particularly around the Christmas holidays and Holy Week. While the weather is excellent, expect larger crowds and potentially higher accommodation prices. For a balance of good weather and fewer people, consider visiting during the shoulder months, such as November to early December or February to April, outside of major holidays.

Food and Dining Near Moalboal — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to Cebu is complete without savoring Kinilaw, a Filipino ceviche. Fresh, raw fish (often tuna or tanigue) is marinated in vinegar, calamansi juice, onions, ginger, and chili peppers. It’s a refreshing and tangy dish that perfectly complements the tropical climate. You can find excellent versions at local eateries in Moalboal, often served with rice.

Another must-try is Lechon Cebuano. While you might find it in other parts of the Philippines, Cebu is renowned for having some of the best. This whole roasted pig is known for its incredibly crispy skin and succulent, flavorful meat, seasoned with a blend of spices. Many restaurants and carinderias in and around Moalboal offer Lechon, especially for group meals.

For those with a sweet tooth, Halo-Halo is a characteristic Filipino dessert that’s perfect for cooling down. This popular treat is a delightful mix of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream. It’s a customizable dessert, and finding your favorite combination is part of the fun. Look for it at local dessert stalls and restaurants.

Don't forget to try some fresh seafood. Moalboal is a coastal town, and you’ll find an abundance of freshly caught fish, prawns, and squid. Many restaurants offer grilled or fried options, allowing you to enjoy the natural flavors of the ocean. Pair your seafood with a side of garlic rice for a truly satisfying Filipino meal.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Moalboal

Filipinos are known for their warmth and hospitality. When interacting with locals in Moalboal, a friendly greeting like "Maayong adlaw" (Good day) or "Salamat" (Thank you) goes a long way. Respect local customs, dress modestly when visiting religious sites, and always ask permission before taking photos of people. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for excellent service.

Moalboal is generally a safe place for tourists. However, it's always wise to take standard precautions. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas. Secure your valuables and avoid displaying expensive items. For any emergencies, local police can be reached at 911. It’s also advisable to have the resort’s contact number handy.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is crucial for getting around. For communication, WhatsApp or Messenger are widely used. If you plan on booking local tours or transport on the go, having the Traveloka app installed will be very useful for managing your bookings and discovering new places to book attraction tickets.

Familiarize yourself with basic Tagalog or Cebuano phrases, though English is widely understood in tourist areas. Understanding local etiquette, such as removing your shoes before entering someone's home, shows respect. Being informed and respectful will ensure a more enriching and pleasant visit to Moalboal.

I thought the value for the price simply wasn’t there. The rooms were big, but so many random people on the property after being told we were the only ones booked for the night. They also don’t take credit cards, so that was a bit of a surprise. They only take PayPal or Cash. Just makes the arrival a process. It’s also far removed from restaurants and the beach.

I would highly recommend the honeymoon suite. See my other review of the property. Toilet was leaking onto the floor but I did not report it because it did not bother me. Water pressure was ok and internet was spotty. Aside from the cons, the staff was great and the food was reasonable. CAUTION: Bring lots of cash. They are CASH ONLY hotel. The other option was wire transfer or PayPal.

Service and property were fantastic! I was hesitant at first so I ended up booking only two nights. We ended up wanting to stay another night but I could not cancel the other hotel I booked. I would highly recommend the honeymoon suite. The property is a bit dated and needs some tlc but I guess it’s part of its charm.

The property resort is very far from everything and the kitchen doesn’t open until 8am so if you’re an early riser, you will starve to death. Page is one of the staff who greeted us and she is not the friendliest or lacking customer appeal or courtesy. Also the beds have mosquito nets that smell so bad which I think has never been washed and there’s holes on it so it basically is useless.

What a paradise. This place is fantastic. We had an amazing stay with Liz and Adam, and their helpful staff. We didn't realise until we arrived that Moalboal is some of the best diving in Asia, so were able to enjoy a few days snorkelling. The place had well situated rooms & access to the sea. Had overall serenety & quietness. Staff were friendly. Also, all snorkeling equipment in including fins are included.

What a great place for rest and relaxation. The staff was amazing. Ray and Nakita were the perfect host and always looking out for me. Adam Windust was an amazing dive instructor with the patience of a saint. Thanks Adam for getting me certified. Highly recommend due to location and staff. This is one of the cleanest and safest places I’ve stayed in the Philippines. I never locked my door once while I was here for 4 days.

Great stay! Arrived late in the evening. The hotel waited for me for check-in and super accommodating. The next morning I had an early morning dive and left the hotel then came back, took a shower and officially went on to my next hotspot.

The property is located right on the beach and you can literally walk into the ocean. It had great views of the ocean with a very peaceful atmosphere.

What a paradise. This place is fantastic. We had an amazing stay with Liz and Adam, and their helpful staff. We didn't realise until we arrived that Moalboal is some of the best diving in Asia, so were able to enjoy a few days snorkelling. As beginners, Liz took us out our first time, and Norman was a fantastic guide for the other days we went out on the boat. All the equipment was provided and it was an incredible experience The rooms are spacious and comfortable. The food on site is great - some of the best we had in the Philippines. Try the garlic tikka or the mung bean patties - both delicious. Its a little bit pricier than elsewhere but the quality was excellent. The resort has loads of places to hide away and read a book, and a great pool to relax by.
