Your Travel Guide to Baguio City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Baguio City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For the most convenient booking, book flight tickets through Traveloka and compare fares across major airlines.

Traveling to Baguio City from Manila is a popular choice for many Filipinos seeking a cooler climate. The most common method is by bus, with numerous companies like Victory Liner and Genesis Transport operating daily trips. Buses depart from terminals in Cubao, Pasay, and other key locations in Metro Manila. The journey typically takes between 5 to 7 hours, depending on traffic conditions, with fares ranging from PHP 700 to PHP 1,000 for regular or executive seats.

For those who prefer to fly, there are no direct commercial flights to Baguio's Loakan Airport at present. However, you can book flight tickets to Clark International Airport (CRK) in Pampanga, which is about a 2 to 3-hour drive from Baguio. From Clark, you can take a bus or arrange for private transport. This option can be faster overall if you find good flight deals, so it's worth checking for flights to CRK.

Driving your own vehicle offers flexibility, especially for families or groups. From Metro Manila, you can take the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and then the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) towards Tarlac. From Tarlac, you'll connect to the MacArthur Highway and then take the scenic route up to Baguio via the Marcos Highway or Kennon Road. Toll fees can add up, so factor this into your budget.

Best Time to Visit Baguio City

Baguio City experiences a generally cool climate year-round, but the best time to visit for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which runs from November to May. During these months, the weather is typically sunny with cooler temperatures, making it ideal for outdoor activities and sightseeing. The peak tourist season falls between December and February, coinciding with Christmas and Chinese New Year holidays, when the city is livelier but also more crowded.

The months of June to October mark the wet season, characterized by frequent rainfall, sometimes heavy. While the city can be misty and atmospheric during this time, outdoor activities might be limited. However, visiting during the off-peak months of the wet season can offer a more tranquil experience and potentially lower accommodation prices. The Panagbenga Festival, held every February, is a major draw, showcasing vibrant flower floats and street dances, but expect significant crowds during this period.

Food and Dining Near Baguio City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to Baguio is complete without indulging in its unique culinary offerings. Strawberries are a local specialty, and you must try strawberry taho, a warm silken tofu dessert topped with fresh strawberries and syrup, a delightful treat especially on a cool morning. Freshly baked strawberry shortcake and strawberry ice cream are also popular choices found in many local cafes and bakeries.

Another must-try is the Baguio longganisa, a distinctively sweet and garlicky sausage that is a breakfast staple for many visitors. You can find this in local markets and restaurants, often served with fried rice and eggs. For a more substantial meal, try the pinikpikan, a traditional Cordilleran dish made with chicken and a specific type of leafy vegetable, known for its rich flavor.

For those seeking savory delights, the Ube Kinampay, a purple yam jam, is a popular pasalubong (souvenir) and spread. You can also find delicious versions of sinigang, a sour soup, often made with local vegetables and pork or fish, offering a comforting and flavorful meal. Exploring the local markets and smaller eateries will often lead you to the most authentic and delicious versions of these Baguio specialties.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Baguio City

Baguio City is known for its friendly locals and a generally relaxed pace of life. When interacting with residents, politeness and respect are appreciated. It's common to hear the local dialect, Ibaloi, alongside Tagalog and English. Tipping is not customary but always appreciated for exceptional service. Be mindful of the environment; littering is frowned upon, and many areas encourage recycling.

Safety in Baguio is generally good, but like any city, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas. Keep your valuables secure and avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas late at night. In case of emergencies, the local police hotline is 911. It's also a good idea to have the contact numbers for your hotel and local transportation services readily available.

For a smoother trip, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is crucial for getting around. Ride-sharing apps are also available and can be convenient for getting from your hotel to various attractions. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger are widely used. Having these tools can enhance your travel experience in Baguio.

1.2025, The room wasn't ready on time and we had to wait for 45 minutes before we could see the room. Our reserved room didn't have an HVAC heating or cooling. There was one ceiling fan and window for the room ventilation. The paint on the walls looked dull and needed a fresh coat of paint. Breakfast isn't included. In my opinion, Forest Lodge failed to meet our expectations. We canceled our reservation within 20 minutes of our arrival and left. Based on our experience, I don't recommend this hotel for the reasons stated above.

Attentive staff, decent lobby and room, food was ok, but they really need to double down on tending to details- toilet seat and sink faucet loose and wobbly- minor annoyances. Room door did not fully close, and you don't realize it- serious security issue. Ordered room service for dinner one night, salt provided in a small bowl, with chunks of some black contaminant. Gotta sign a receipt to borrow an umbrella- ridiculous. Checkout took over 10 minutes- inefficient; glad we left very early. Tried to charge us for minibar items we didn't consume- sloppy (or dishonest). Overall, mediocre at best. If we go to Baguio again we will try a different hotel.

Staff always great. Facility getting dated, but still clean. Always a great stay there.

Staff was courteous but the room needs some updating, especially the bathroom. Very low water pressure in the shower and the closets smelled like moth balls.

Your email asks “how was our balcony view,” and we did not stay in a room with balcony. I am not sure if we were given the wrong room.

Love how peaceful it felt like in the property felt like. Just need more deep cleaning. The shower heads were dirty, could use some bleach soaking.
