The tv in unit 106 wasn't working, but it was okay. Great experience when we used their event area and had them catered. Enjoyed having breakfast in the courtyard area. This is the second time we've stayed and it was better than the last time. Hope see the staff at the palcio de laoag again next year.

Your Travel Guide to Laoag City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Laoag City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most convenient way to reach Laoag City from Manila is by air. Several airlines operate flights to Laoag International Airport (LAO). Flight durations are typically around 1 hour and 15 minutes. Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book, but budget-conscious travelers can often find deals. Booking your flight early through Traveloka is recommended for the best prices.

For those who prefer land travel or are coming from other parts of Luzon, bus services are readily available. Major bus companies operate routes to Laoag City from Metro Manila, with terminals located in Cubao and Pasay. The journey is considerably longer, usually taking between 9 to 12 hours, depending on traffic and stops. Bus fares typically range from PHP 800 to PHP 1,500, offering a more economical option for travelers.

Driving to Laoag City is also an option for adventurous travelers with their own vehicles. The route primarily involves taking the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and then the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX), eventually connecting to the MacArthur Highway and continuing north. The total driving distance from Manila is approximately 490 kilometers, and the travel time can be around 8 to 10 hours, excluding stops. Toll fees will add to the overall cost.

Best Time to Visit Laoag City

The ideal time to visit Laoag City is generally during the dry season, which runs from November to April. During these months, the weather is typically sunny and pleasant, with lower humidity and minimal rainfall, making it perfect for outdoor activities and sightseeing. The cool breeze during the amihan season (northeast monsoon) from November to February can be quite refreshing.

The peak tourist season usually falls between December and February, coinciding with the Christmas holidays and cooler weather. If you prefer fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices, consider visiting during the shoulder months of November or late April. The wet season, from May to October, brings occasional heavy rains and typhoons, which might disrupt travel plans, though prices for accommodation and flights can be significantly lower during this period.

Food and Dining Near Laoag City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to Ilocos Norte is complete without savoring the distinct flavors of Ilocano cuisine. A must-try is the

Pinakbet

, a hearty vegetable stew made with local produce like eggplant, bitter gourd, okra, and string beans, flavored with bagoong (fermented shrimp paste). It’s a staple that showcases the region's agricultural bounty and culinary heritage. Many local eateries and restaurants in Laoag City serve authentic versions.

Another iconic dish is the

Bagnet

, crispy deep-fried pork belly that is a true indulgence. Its crunchy skin and tender meat make it a popular choice for celebrations and everyday meals alike. You'll find excellent Bagnet in many carinderias and restaurants throughout Laoag, often served with a side of dipping sauce. It’s a dish that embodies the rich, savory tastes of the region.

Don't leave without trying

Empanada de Ilocos

, a unique savory pastry filled with Vigan longganisa (a type of pork sausage), vegetables, and a whole egg, all encased in a crispy, orange-hued dough. The Laoag empanada has its own local variations and is a popular street food and snack. You can find vendors selling these delicious treats, especially in local markets and popular tourist spots.

For those with a sweet tooth,

Maja Blanca

, a creamy coconut pudding, is a delightful dessert. While found in other parts of the Philippines, the Ilocano version often has a distinct richness. Also, try the local

Chichacorn

, a crunchy snack made from corn, available in various flavors. These local delicacies offer a sweet conclusion to your Ilocano culinary journey.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Laoag City

The people of Ilocos Norte are known for their industriousness, resilience, and strong sense of community. While generally reserved, they are warm and hospitable once you engage with them. It's polite to greet locals with a friendly "Naimbag nga aldaw" (Good day). Showing respect for elders and local customs, such as dressing modestly when visiting churches, is always appreciated.

Laoag City is considered a safe destination for travelers. However, as with any urban area, it's wise to remain aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places like markets or bus terminals. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items openly. For any emergencies, local police can be reached at their hotline number, which is usually available through your hotel's front desk or a quick online search.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is indispensable for getting around the city and finding your way to attractions. A translation app can be helpful if you wish to communicate more effectively with locals, though many in tourist areas speak English and Tagalog. For booking transportation or finding local deals, the Traveloka app is your go-to resource.

Having a local currency converter app can also be useful for managing your budget. Staying connected is easy with local SIM cards available at the airport or in town, allowing you to use data for these apps and stay in touch. The property serve an okay food. Breakfast supposedly starts at 6am but they were never on time during our 6day stay there. The property is not maintained, has stagnant water in some planters so definitely there were a lot of mosquitoes. We stayed in a so called “deluxe “ room but you’ll find roaches crawling at night. The room is dirty and bathroom smells sewer coming from the drainage. The room doesn’t have an intercom, so of course don’t expect a hair dryer or any extra amenities. When we came we had to ask them to reclean the bathroom and asked to refill the empty bottles of soap and shampoo. The hotel does laundry and we were told that it was 70php per kg., after they washed it, they told us it’s 100php per kg. They also don’t know how to segregate white from colored clothes, my white blouse turned light blueish color. It seems like some of the workers from the front desk don’t really know what they’re doing. The lady on day shift told us that she’ll provide as toilet paper, but never followed through. We had to go to the front desk and asked again. They don’t even know how to check whether their client had multiple reservations. They had to ask the hard copy I made, so they can make their own copy of my reservations.

We spent 7 nights here - quite area and safe. Near hospital and easy to get around Laoag. The hotel needs small updates to make it a better place. Management need to change ways of working and encourage staff to engage with customers and make the most of opportunities to enhance the experience. Modest rooms. Basic but adequate menu. Breakfast is I’d say good. Pay attention to daily up keep of the swimming pool. Chemical/ cleaning So overall it’s safe value for money good parking. And very charming staff.

I guess the pool and spa will be fun if we have chance to use it during our stay because we explore a lot than to stay. The staffs are friendly and very flexible to our sudden change specially transportation, we like the cold ac, warm shower, and good breakfast foods ilocano food there are great.

The tv in unit 106 wasn't working, but it was okay. Great experience when we used their event area and had them catered. Enjoyed having breakfast in the courtyard area. This is the second time we've stayed and it was better than the last time. Hope see the staff at the palcio de laoag again next year.

Stayed there 6 weeks from March thru April 2024. Awesome front desk Starr from Roxanne and her girls. Excellent service from Helen and her stall. Felt safe thanks to Errol from Security. Refreshing pool, reasonable rates and has a pool table., And especially tasty dishes from the kitchen. Will be back in November, 5 star service, accommodation, cleanliness, friendly staff. All around five star rating from Me,
