Your Travel Guide to Makati as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Makati from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For travelers coming from other parts of the Philippines, flying into Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Metro Manila is the most common and efficient method. Major airlines operate frequent flights from key cities like Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, and Cagayan de Oro to NAIA. You can often find competitive fares if you book flight tickets in advance, especially during promotional periods. Flight durations typically range from 1 to 2 hours.

Once you land at NAIA, reaching Makati is straightforward. Taxis and ride-sharing services are readily available at the airport terminals. The journey to Makati can take anywhere from 30 minutes to over an hour, depending heavily on traffic conditions, which can be quite challenging in Metro Manila. Budget around PHP 300 to PHP 500 for a taxi fare. Alternatively, you can opt for public transport by taking an airport bus or a combination of LRT/MRT lines, which is more budget-friendly but requires more transfers and time.

If you are traveling from nearby provinces in Luzon, taking a bus is a more economical option. Numerous bus companies operate routes to various terminals in Metro Manila, including those that serve Makati. Bus fares are considerably lower than flights, typically ranging from PHP 500 to PHP 1,500 depending on the origin city and bus class. From the bus terminal, you can then take a taxi, ride-sharing service, or public transport to reach your specific destination in Makati.

Best Time to Visit Makati

Makati, like much of Metro Manila, experiences a tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons. The best time to visit for most Filipino travelers seeking pleasant weather is during the dry season, which generally runs from November to April. During these months, you can expect sunny days with lower humidity and minimal rainfall, making it ideal for exploring the city's outdoor attractions, shopping districts, and dining establishments without the interruption of heavy downpours.

The cooler months within the dry season, specifically from November to February, are particularly enjoyable. Temperatures are milder, and the air feels less oppressive, which enhances the experience of walking around the city or enjoying al fresco dining. This period is also popular for local holidays and festivities, offering a glimpse into Filipino celebrations. However, it's also considered peak tourist season, so expect larger crowds and potentially higher accommodation prices.

The wet season, from May to October, brings higher humidity and frequent rainfall, often in the form of heavy afternoon thunderstorms. While this period might deter some outdoor activities, it also means fewer tourists and potentially lower prices for flights and hotels. If you don't mind occasional rain showers and are prepared with an umbrella or raincoat, visiting during the wet season can still be a rewarding experience, offering a different perspective of the city and a more relaxed atmosphere in popular spots.

Food and Dining Near Makati — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to the Philippines is complete without indulging in its rich culinary heritage, and Makati offers a fantastic array of dining experiences. A must-try is Adobo, the unofficial national dish. Whether it's chicken or pork, slow-cooked in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns, its savory and tangy flavor is a true representation of Filipino comfort food. You can find excellent versions in many local eateries and even upscale restaurants around Makati.

Another iconic dish to savor is Sinigang, a sour and savory soup, typically made with tamarind broth and a choice of meat like pork, beef, or fish, along with an assortment of vegetables. Its distinct sourness is incredibly refreshing and pairs perfectly with steamed rice. For a taste of something truly Filipino, seek out Kare-Kare, a rich stew made with oxtail, tripe, and vegetables in a thick, savory peanut sauce, traditionally served with bagoong (shrimp paste) on the side.

For those who enjoy grilled specialties, Lechon (roasted whole pig) is a celebratory dish that's worth seeking out, though often available in smaller portions in restaurants. If you're looking for something lighter yet flavorful, try La Paz Batchoy, a hearty noodle soup originating from Iloilo, packed with pork, shrimp, and vegetables. These dishes, and many more, can be explored through the diverse dining scene in Makati, offering authentic tastes of the Philippines.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Makati

Filipino culture is known for its warmth and hospitality. When interacting with locals in Makati, a polite greeting like "Magandang araw" (Good day) or "Salamat" (Thank you) goes a long way. Filipinos are generally respectful of elders and authority figures. While Makati is a modern city, it's always good practice to dress modestly when visiting religious sites or more traditional areas. Be mindful of your surroundings, especially in crowded places, and keep your valuables secure.

For safety, it's advisable to be aware of common scams, such as overly friendly strangers offering unsolicited help or deals that seem too good to be true. Stick to reputable taxi services or ride-sharing apps for transportation. In case of emergencies, the local police hotline is typically 117. Having a local SIM card can be very useful for communication and accessing data services.

To enhance your travel experience in Makati, several apps are highly recommended. Grab is essential for booking rides and food delivery, making transportation and dining convenient. Google Maps is invaluable for navigation, helping you find your way around the city and discover points of interest. For currency conversion and quick translations, apps like XE Currency and Google Translate can be very helpful. These tools will ensure you have a smoother and more informed trip.

They didn't fulfill any of our requests. Then they only gave breakfast for 1 even though their site says 2. Plus the electricity wasn't working well at first. They also didn't give the balcony key even though we asked for it and the reception wasn't very welcoming. The lobby was under renovation and it was extremely hot.

I've been with this hotel many times already but this time was worst. The shower was not fazed and the shower was clogged. Didn't faflash. The CR floods the Penthouse. Worst than ever. I hope they can work on it. It can cause irritation and loss of appetite.

It was not that awesome to begin with. The night shift receptionist who assisted was awesome. She was nice. The place is ok. There’s a not so good smell along the 12th floor hallway. Breakfast was served late. Need to make three calls for it to be served.

It was my second stay at Victor Hotel. I stayed at Room 607. Everything was okay until I noticed some small cockroaches in the bathroom sink and ants crawling on the walls. I believe the hotel management should do some pest control.

The location is good. Very near to malls. The room is really big and very cheap. However its obvious that the place is really old. There are cockroaches and ants as well. So hopefully the place gets renovated.

Worst ever experience i had ever. 1. Time of check in i ask security guard 4 times "can i have glass of water" he replied sorry sir i can't leave my place and get you water 2. Checked in 8th floor which smells like extremely bad chicken farm or pigpen farm 3. Room furniture too old any time can fall down 4. Aircon was horrible noisy like diesel generator. It was good. But I hope they can provide telephones in each rooms so that it will not a waste of time for clients to go down for inquiries. They also have to place aircon at the elevator. Subrang init. But yung room, it was great really.

The rooms are spacious, clean and comfy at the same time for a cheap price, but don't expect too much. Expect base on the amount you paid. Food are okay. Service are okay also.

The building is repairing and so messy. The room is quite old though it is also wide place in central Makati with this price. I can't stand the bathroom which too old and dirty. Others are okay for this price
