Your Travel Guide to Cagayan de Oro City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Cagayan de Oro City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most convenient way to reach Cagayan de Oro City from Manila and other major Philippine hubs is by air. Flights to Laguindingan Airport (CGY) typically range from PHP 3,000 to PHP 7,000 for a round trip, depending on the airline and booking time. The flight duration is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. Booking your book flight tickets in advance can help you find more affordable options.

For budget-conscious travelers, bus travel is an option, though significantly longer. From Manila, a bus journey to Cagayan de Oro can take around 20 to 24 hours and typically costs between PHP 1,500 to PHP 2,500. Several bus companies operate this route, offering different levels of comfort. This option is best suited for those who have ample time and prefer to save on airfare.

Driving to Cagayan de Oro City is also possible for those who enjoy road trips. The journey from Manila involves navigating major highways and can take over 24 hours, covering a distance of over 1,300 kilometers. Toll fees will add to the overall cost. This route is more common for travelers coming from nearby Mindanao provinces or those who prefer the flexibility of having their own vehicle.

Best Time to Visit Cagayan de Oro City

Cagayan de Oro City enjoys a tropical climate, with temperatures generally warm throughout the year. The dry season, typically from November to May, is considered the best time to visit for outdoor activities and exploring the city's attractions. During these months, you can expect less rainfall and more sunshine, perfect for enjoying the local sights and adventures.

The wet season runs from June to October, characterized by more frequent rain showers. While rain is common, it often comes in short bursts, and the city remains accessible. Traveling during the shoulder months, like November or May, can offer a good balance of pleasant weather and fewer crowds, potentially leading to better deals on accommodation and flights.

Food and Dining Near Cagayan de Oro City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No visit to Cagayan de Oro is complete without trying its local culinary delights. A must-try is the Kinilaw, a Filipino version of ceviche, where fresh raw fish is "cooked" in vinegar, spiced with ginger, onions, and chili. It's a refreshing appetizer that perfectly captures the local flavors, often found in local eateries and restaurants.

Another local favorite is the Sinuglaw, a delicious combination of sinugba (grilled pork belly) and kinilaw. The smoky flavor of the grilled pork melds beautifully with the tangy and spicy notes of the kinilaw, creating a unique and satisfying dish. Many restaurants in Cagayan de Oro offer their own take on this popular specialty.

For those who enjoy hearty meals, the Bulalo, a light-colored soup made by slow-cooking beef shanks and bone marrow until the collagen and fat melt into the broth, is a comforting choice. While not exclusive to CDO, the local versions are often praised for their rich flavor. You can find excellent Bulalo in many carinderias and restaurants around the city.

Don't forget to sample local delicacies like Pastel de Lengua, a sweet and savory pastry filled with beef tongue. This unique pastry is a popular pasalubong (souvenir) item and a delightful treat to enjoy. Exploring the local markets and food stalls will also reveal a variety of other regional specialties worth tasting.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Cagayan de Oro City

Cagayan de Oro City is known for its friendly and welcoming locals. A common greeting is "Maayong adlaw" (Good day). It's polite to acknowledge elders with "po" and "opo." Respecting local customs, such as dressing modestly when visiting religious sites, is always appreciated. The city is generally safe, but like any urban area, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially at night.

For safety, it's recommended to keep valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items. Stick to well-lit and populated areas when walking around, particularly after dark. In case of emergencies, the local police hotline is typically 911. Having the contact numbers for your hotel and local transportation services readily available is also a good practice.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is indispensable for getting around. Ride-sharing apps are also popular and convenient for transportation. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Viber are widely used by Filipinos. Having a currency converter app can also be helpful for managing your budget.

A great place if you like mice in your overpriced room! Their online prices are cheaper than their walkin rates, so I had to book a room online in their lobby. Staff unfriendly. I rented a suite and they charged extra to makeup the sofa bed. Had to move the refrigerator and plug it in myself. Aircon in a strange position and you can't hear if it's accepting commands from the remote. And the mice. Beakfast was a joke. In a cafeteria-syle room, there was no creamer for the coffee ("sorry, out of stock"). I ordered the only non-Filipino dish of the 6 on the menu (all the other were the usual rice, egg and some type of meat) , French toast with butter and jelly. When it arrived, no jelly ("sorry, sir, out of stock"). There is a supermarket a few blocks away and the in-house independent coffee shop had creamer. Stay there only if you have money to burn for a second-rate place (I paid 56USD for a double) and you have business in the area. Downtown is far away.

Kind and helpful staff. Items on breakfast menu not always available, varies day to day. WiFi was down 3 out of 7 days when I was there, for the full day. Location is relatively quiet, which I liked. Advertised with bidet but upon checking with counter staff, no rooms have bidet. The room is big and spacious, bed is incredibly comfortable. I would consider staying there again, it has been a pleasant stay overall.

The lobby very impressive. My room was on the 2nd floor. I am a walker so I did not know that the elevator was out of service.my sister who has disability was not able to visit me due to the non existent elevator. The room smelled cigarette. I complained as I booked a non smoking room. The receptionist Ella told me that all rooms are non smoking. So clearly the housekeeping did not report the incident. Ella was so gracious n moved me to another room. The bed was on the loft so if you have a heavy luggage or has disability or elderly, it will be difficult to go up n down the stairs. The room is clean n has a kitchenette and a pull away bed which is a plus. The price is affordable. So I might give this hotel a chance the next time a visit Cagayan de Oro City.

When my family arrived, the rooms were not ready. Then they gave us a room where the door lock is broken and we cannot close it. They ended up giving us the master key do we'll be able to lock it if we leave the room. Employees are doing all the departmental work. The elevator is out of order. We have to climb the stairs to go on the 2nd floor. There's no bell boy to carry our luggages. All male employees carried the luggage for us including the security guard. Their laundry service is bad too. It took them 3-1/2 days to do ours. Because their machine broke down.

The hotel according to the previous reports was minutes from the airport. It may have been last year but now the new airport is built it's an hour's drive away and cost 1,200 pesos each way in the hotel courtesy car. The hotel is quite a long way from any beaches and the city itself but there is a shopping mall nearby and freshly cooked chicken stores as well as local restaurants. Staff were courtious and helpful and the room was serviced daily apart from replenishment of shampoos and soaps. There are cooking facilities which was good and also many TV channels and the bed was comfortable and clean. The breakfasts were cooked fresh and fairly wholesome but the choice is somewhat limited. Fairly good value for money.

We paid a total of $109 for 4 people to stay there, 2 on hideabed. we found out later that the hotel is far from center Cagayan de Oro and this caused many problems. We also found out there are hotels in cagayan with similar amenities and better facilities at half or less the cost. The pricing structure is not remotely fair to the traveler. We were in late and out early. breakfast was good. Also it was a slight battle to get sheets on the hideabed when we had already paid for the extra travelers.

Room was tidy and comfortable, but noisy at night due to adjoining room late night partying and loud 24 hour car and foot traffic from customers using businesses located below the 2nd floor room. The free breakfast was small portions, very basic, and cold except for the rice and coffee. Overall I was disappointed because the hotel rates are higher than other establishments closer to the city center yet less satisfying overall.

The hotel itself is fairly new. The neighborhood is very safe. The SM Mall is just down the street. It does have small shops inside the hotel. My favorite is the meat shop, where you can buy Kobe beef, but many different types of cheeses as well. It has a cleaning service, spa and electronic bingo. My suggestion would be to open a convenience store as well. I had to go back into the center of the city just to get mouth wash. Overall a good experience... I will stay there again.

i like the location, friendly staff. It’s clean. I suggest adding electrical outlets in the upper level. We didn’t have warm water for shower.
