Your Travel Guide to Manila as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Manila from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For the most convenient booking, book flight tickets through Traveloka and compare fares across major airlines.

For travelers coming from other parts of the Philippines, flying into Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila is the most common and efficient method. Major airlines like Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia operate frequent flights from key cities such as Cebu, Davao, and Iloilo. Fares can range from PHP 2,000 to PHP 6,000 or more, depending on the season and how far in advance you book your flight.

If you prefer land travel or are coming from nearby Luzon provinces, bus services offer a more economical option. Major bus terminals in Metro Manila, like those in Cubao and Pasay, serve routes from various provincial destinations. Bus fares typically range from PHP 800 to PHP 1,500 for longer inter-island routes. Travel times can vary significantly, from a few hours for nearby provinces to over 24 hours for distant locations.

For those driving to Manila, the city is accessible via a network of expressways and national highways. Major routes include the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and South Luzon Expressway (SLEX), which connect to Metro Manila's road systems. Toll fees will apply, varying based on the distance traveled and the type of vehicle. Planning your route using GPS is recommended to navigate the city's complex road network efficiently.

Best Time to Visit Manila

Manila experiences a tropical climate, with two main seasons: the dry season from November to April and the wet season from May to October. For the most pleasant weather, consider visiting during the dry season, particularly from November to February. During these months, temperatures are generally cooler and humidity levels are lower, making it more comfortable for outdoor exploration.

The peak tourist season typically aligns with the dry season, especially around the Christmas holidays and Holy Week. While the weather is ideal, expect larger crowds and potentially higher accommodation prices. For a more relaxed visit and potentially better deals, consider the shoulder months of November or February. Visiting during the wet season can offer fewer crowds and lower prices, but be prepared for occasional heavy rainfall.

Food and Dining Near Manila — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to Manila is complete without indulging in Adobo, the unofficial national dish. This savory and tangy stew, typically made with chicken or pork braised in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns, is a staple in Filipino households. You can find excellent versions in traditional eateries and even in more upscale restaurants across the city.

Another must-try is Sinigang, a sour and savory soup that offers a comforting and refreshing taste. Made with a tamarind broth and various meats like pork, beef, or fish, along with an assortment of vegetables, it’s a dish that perfectly balances flavors. Many local carinderias and restaurants serve this beloved soup, offering a true taste of home-style Filipino cooking.

For those with a sweet tooth, Halo-Halo is an iconic Filipino dessert that’s perfect for Manila’s warm climate. This delightful concoction features shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, and topped with leche flan and ube ice cream. It’s a visually appealing and deliciously refreshing treat found in many dessert shops and restaurants throughout the city.

Don't leave Manila without trying Lechon, a whole roasted pig known for its incredibly crispy skin and succulent meat. While often a centerpiece for celebrations, many restaurants offer Lechon portions for everyday enjoyment. The rich flavor and satisfying crunch make it a truly memorable culinary experience that embodies Filipino hospitality and festivity.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Manila

Filipinos are known for their warmth and hospitality. A simple "po" and "opo" when addressing elders or those in authority shows respect. When visiting churches or people's homes, dress modestly. It's also customary to remove your shoes before entering a Filipino home. Understanding these basic courtesies will enhance your interactions with locals.

When it comes to safety, Manila is generally safe for tourists, but it's always wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas. Keep your valuables secure and be mindful of petty theft. Avoid displaying expensive items openly. In case of emergencies, the national emergency hotline is 911. It's also a good idea to have the hotel's contact information readily available.

To navigate Manila more easily, consider downloading essential apps. Grab is indispensable for ride-hailing and food delivery, offering a convenient way to get around and order meals. Google Maps is crucial for navigation, providing real-time traffic updates and directions. For communication, WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger are widely used by locals.

Familiarize yourself with basic Tagalog phrases like "Salamat" (Thank you) and "Magkano?" (How much?). While English is widely spoken, knowing a few local words can be appreciated. Understanding the local currency, the Philippine Peso (PHP), and having some cash on hand for smaller vendors or transportation is also recommended, though many establishments accept card payments.

There is something about this hotel that I quite like. It's slightly boutique-ish, and the staff are always lovely, polite, helpful, and kind. I've stayed here several times in the past but had not returned since the pandemic. The hotel has slipped a little, slightly apathetic, a few cockroaches (unavoidable in Manila), the room fridge was in need of replacement, there was no kettle, no water in the room, and there were paint spots/drips from whenever the room had been repainted which should have been cleaned up after the renovation, and just a bit of a tired feel to the hotel. However, that said, it's still a lovely calm relaxing little hotel in the middle of the hustle of Malate, and the staff obviously work hard with the little resources that have and don't hesitate to assist guests. I actually extended my stay here by another four days. Highlight was the rooftop pool and the accessibility to well, Manila, and Robinsons mall down the road, and just behind the hotel is a restobar that caters to locals, i.e., doesn't try to empty the wallets of tourists.

The staff was very helpful and accommodating. The rooms we got were okay and we had a relaxed stay. There were a lot of accessible places we got to go to like a Korean restaurant, dessert place, and a cafe that was just across the street.

The toilet door position is inappropriate because when you open it blocked the way to shower position. The space between lowest edge of the door against the floor is too big that it allows any sound from outside to got through. Thus, it disturbs other guests. Housekeeping staff on same floor of my room was doing maintenance at 1130 pm. Again disturbing my rest and other guests. He also left cleaning chemical on the floor and it stings inside the room. The photos in app was not the same as what it is in reality. As soon as I checked in the telephone was not working.

everything not really bad but not good at all. the room is quite old and smelling also the toilet. it seem like no one stay there for long times and they not taking care of the room. And breakfast in the morning I have to wait for very long time even it not crowded. There were 3 people but only 1 waiter was on serving customer. another is chef. and 1 more person that one I want to complain, he did nothing. only sit inside the bar. when I asked him to order food, he stared at me and said : Sit down . then I have to sit and wait until the waiter come. He only look at the waiter was running there to do everything without help. I don't know what he is but I think he need to support partner and he need to improve the attitude with customer. anyway the waiter and the security very nice. it was the so so place to stay. I am not recommend anyone to stay here
