It's my first stay in Seoul, Korea. Location of the hotel is quite good; it's behind the national hospital, and the imperial palace. So, cultural sightseeing is very easy although going to hip places such as gangnam area or itaewon might take you about 15-20 min by taxi ride. Rooms are quite big with semi-industrial theme. The bed was clean and nice; pillow was soft. No complaints for sleeping. Staff are very kind and helpful, and also English speaking. The owner even waits for me checking in at midnight (two thumbs up!!) Food was easy to find; downstairs you have 2 options: Cuban food (hotel owned) or traditional korean food. Both have awesome taste. Would definitely come back to stay.

Food & Dining

A Culinary Journey Through Gwanghwamun

Gwanghwamun and its surrounding Jongno district are a culinary destination, offering a deep dive into the rich flavours of Korean cuisine. Iconic dishes like bibimbap, a colourful rice bowl with vegetables and meat, and bulgogi, marinated grilled beef, are readily available and expertly prepared. For a truly local experience, don't miss trying samgyeopsal (grilled pork belly) or the hearty kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew). The area’s food scene is a vibrant reflection of Korea’s gastronomic heritage, inviting exploration and indulgence for every palate.

For an authentic taste of local life, a visit to Gwangjang Market is essential. This bustling traditional market is a food lover's dream, offering an incredible array of street food and local delicacies. Here, you can sample bindaetteok (mung bean pancakes), mayak gimbap (mini seaweed rice rolls), and various types of kimchi. For Muslim travellers seeking Halal options, while traditional Korean cuisine often uses pork and other non-Halal ingredients, many restaurants in tourist-friendly areas like Insadong and near major attractions are increasingly offering Halal-certified menus or vegetarian/seafood options. It’s always advisable to inquire beforehand.

The cost of dining in Gwanghwamun offers a range of options to suit different budgets. Street food at markets like Gwangjang can be incredibly affordable, with snacks costing as little as ₱100-₱200. Mid-range restaurants serving traditional Korean meals typically range from ₱800 to ₱2,000 per person. For a more upscale dining experience at a fine-dining establishment or a high-end hotel restaurant, expect to pay upwards of ₱3,000 to ₱5,000 or more. This pricing is generally perceived as good value by international travellers, especially considering the quality and unique culinary experiences.

Navigating dining etiquette in Gwanghwamun is straightforward and adds to the cultural experience. Tipping is not customary in South Korea; excellent service is already factored into the price. When dining, it's polite to wait for elders or the host to start eating first. Using chopsticks and a spoon is standard, with the spoon typically used for rice and soup. Be mindful of noise levels in restaurants, and avoid sticking chopsticks upright in your rice bowl, as this is associated with funeral rites.

Local Etiquette & Safety

Navigating Gwanghwamun with Cultural Awareness

Understanding local customs is key to a smooth and respectful visit to Gwanghwamun. Politeness and respect for elders are paramount in Korean culture. When greeting someone, a slight bow is common, especially when meeting someone older or of higher status. It's also customary to use two hands when giving or receiving items, such as business cards or gifts. While tourist areas are accustomed to international visitors, observing these nuances will enhance your interactions and show appreciation for Korean traditions.

When visiting historical sites like Gyeongbokgung Palace, maintaining a respectful demeanour is important. Dress modestly, avoiding overly revealing clothing, especially when visiting temples or more traditional areas. Photography is generally permitted in most public spaces, but always check for signs indicating restrictions, particularly inside museums or specific cultural exhibits. Gwanghwamun is generally a very safe district for international travellers. Petty crime is low, but it's always wise to be aware of your surroundings and keep valuables secure, especially in crowded markets or on public transport. For convenient and reliable transportation, the Seoul Metro system is extensive, efficient, and easy to navigate. Ride-hailing apps like Kakao T are widely used and recommended for taxi services. For offline navigation, downloading map applications like Naver Maps or Kakao Maps is highly beneficial, as Google Maps has limited functionality for driving directions in South Korea.

In case of emergencies, the general emergency number in South Korea is 119 for police and fire services. For tourist-specific assistance, the Korea Tourist Police can be contacted.
