Stayed at Hotel Peyto Samseong for a few nights—overall, a good experience. The hotel is clean and has a 7-Eleven on the ground floor, which is super convenient for snacks, drinks, or quick meals. It also offers free Wi-Fi, which is fast and reliable—very helpful for travelers who need to stay connected, check maps, or plan their itinerary on the go. The room was small but smartly designed. It fit two people comfortably, and there was enough space on the floor to pray (I'm Muslim), which I really appreciated. Didn't try the breakfast, so I can't comment on the food. Location is great—around 300 meters from Samseong Station and just 100 meters from Olive Young, perfect if you're into Korean skincare and cosmetics.

Food & Dining

A Culinary Journey Through Samseongdong

Samseongdong offers a gastronomic adventure that mirrors its modern and diverse character. While South Korea is renowned for its kimchi, bibimbap, and Korean barbecue, this district elevates these classics and introduces a range of international flavours. From bustling food courts within COEX Mall to upscale dining establishments, the culinary scene here is a vibrant reflection of Seoul's global appeal. Travellers can expect a wide array of options, ensuring that every palate, including those of Muslim visitors seeking Halal-certified meals, can find satisfying choices.

The area around COEX Mall and the convention centre is a focal point for dining, offering a concentration of restaurants that cater to diverse tastes and budgets. For Muslim travellers, while dedicated Halal restaurants might be fewer, many establishments offer vegetarian or seafood dishes that can be prepared without non-Halal ingredients. It's advisable to research specific restaurants beforehand or look for symbols indicating Halal-friendliness. The sheer variety means that with a little planning, enjoying delicious and permissible meals is entirely achievable within Samseongdong.

Dining in Samseongdong presents a range of price points, offering value for international visitors. Street food and casual eateries within the mall can be as affordable as ₱ 300-₱ 600 per person for a meal. Mid-range restaurants typically charge between ₱ 1,000 to ₱ 2,500 per person, while fine dining experiences can range from ₱ 4,000 upwards. Compared to major cities in the US and Europe, these prices offer a good balance of quality and cost, especially for the high standards of cuisine and service provided.

When dining in Samseongdong, understanding local customs enhances the experience. Tipping is not customary in South Korea; excellent service is already factored into the prices. Meal times are generally similar to Western schedules, with lunch around noon and dinner from 6 PM to 8 PM. It's polite to wait for elders to start eating first. For those unfamiliar with Korean cuisine, don't hesitate to ask for recommendations or assistance with ordering; the hospitality is generally warm and welcoming.

Local Etiquette & Safety

Navigating Samseongdong with Cultural Awareness and Confidence

Understanding local etiquette is key to a smooth and respectful visit to Samseongdong. While Seoul is a modern city, traditional Korean customs still hold sway. For instance, it's customary to use both hands when giving or receiving items, especially from elders or superiors. When entering someone's home or certain traditional establishments, removing your shoes is a sign of respect. Public displays of affection are generally more reserved than in Western cultures, and maintaining a polite demeanour in public spaces is always appreciated.

At prominent landmarks like the COEX Mall and COEX Convention & Exhibition Center, visitors are expected to adhere to general public conduct. While dress codes are usually relaxed, especially in shopping areas, overly revealing attire might be less common. Photography is generally permitted, but it's always wise to check for specific restrictions, particularly in exhibition halls or private retail spaces. Queuing culture is well-established, so patience and orderliness are expected when waiting for services or entry.

Samseongdong is a very safe district, with low crime rates, making it a comfortable environment for international travellers. However, as with any major urban area, it's prudent to take standard precautions. Keep your valuables secure, be aware of your surroundings, and use reputable transportation options. Ride-hailing apps are available, though local taxi services are also efficient and widely used. Having offline maps and translation apps can be incredibly helpful for navigation and communication, especially when venturing into less tourist-centric areas.

In case of emergencies, the general emergency number in South Korea is 119 for police and fire services. For specific tourist assistance, the Korea Tourism Organization operates a tourist police service. Filipino travellers should note the location of the Philippine Embassy in Seoul for any consular needs. It's also wise to have travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, as healthcare costs can be significant. Staying informed about any advisories from the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) before your trip is also recommended.

Travel Guide

Your Essential Guide to Samseongdong from the Philippines

Reaching Samseongdong from the Philippines is a straightforward journey, primarily involving flights into Incheon International Airport (ICN), the main gateway to Seoul. Direct flights are available from Manila (MNL) and Cebu (CEB) with major carriers, typically taking around 4 to 5 hours. For travellers from other Philippine hubs, connecting flights through Manila or other regional Asian cities might be necessary. The estimated cost for a round-trip flight can range from ₱ 15,000 to ₱ 30,000, depending on the season and how far in advance you book. From ICN, you can easily reach Samseongdong via the Airport Railroad Express (AREX) or dedicated limousine bus services, with travel times averaging 70-90 minutes.

Once you've arrived in Samseongdong, navigating the district and the wider city is remarkably efficient thanks to Seoul's world-class public transportation system. The subway is the most convenient and cost-effective way to get around, with numerous stations serving the area, including Samseong Station and COEX. A single ride typically costs around ₩1,250 (approximately ₱ 50). Taxis are also readily available and reasonably priced for shorter distances or when travelling with luggage. For those looking to explore beyond the immediate vicinity, purchasing a T-Money card is highly recommended for seamless travel across buses and subways.

The best time to visit Samseongdong largely depends on your preference for weather and crowd levels. Spring (April to May) and Autumn (September to October) offer the most pleasant weather, with mild temperatures and clear skies, making them ideal for exploring the city's attractions. These seasons are also peak travel times, so expect higher hotel prices and more tourists. Summer (June to August) can be hot and humid with occasional rain, while winter (December to February) is cold but offers opportunities for winter sports and festive decorations.

Before embarking on your trip to Samseongdong, a few pre-departure preparations will ensure a smoother experience. The local currency is the South Korean Won (KRW). While major credit cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, and larger stores, it's wise to carry some cash for smaller purchases or street food. You can exchange currency at the airport or local banks. Obtaining a local SIM card or a portable Wi-Fi device at the airport is highly recommended for staying connected. Essential apps include Kakao Maps or Naver Maps (as Google Maps has limited functionality for driving directions in Korea), a translation app, and a ride-hailing app. Use Traveloka to find the best flights — book flight.

Visa Information

Entering South Korea to Visit Samseongdong: A Guide for Philippine Passport Holders

Philippine passport holders planning to visit South Korea, including the vibrant district of Samseongdong, generally require a visa. While South Korea offers visa-free entry for citizens of certain countries for short stays, the Philippines is not typically included in this arrangement for tourism purposes. Therefore, Filipino travellers will need to apply for a tourist visa (usually a C-3 visa) at the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the Philippines or through an authorized visa application centre, such as VFS Global. The standard processing time can range from 10 to 20 working days, so it is advisable to apply well in advance of your intended travel dates.

The application process for a South Korean tourist visa involves submitting a comprehensive set of documents. This typically includes a completed visa application form, a valid Philippine passport with at least six months of remaining validity, passport-sized photographs, proof of financial capacity (such as bank statements or income tax returns), and a confirmed flight itinerary and hotel booking. For those visiting Samseongdong for business or to attend events, an invitation letter from the host company or organization may also be required. The visa fee is subject to change but is generally around ₱ 1,500 to ₱ 2,000, payable in cash.

It is crucial for all travellers to verify the most current visa requirements and policies directly with the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the Philippines or their official immigration website before making any travel arrangements. Immigration regulations can change, and ensuring you have the correct documentation and visa status is paramount for a smooth entry into South Korea. Confirming your visa eligibility and application status before you book your flight is a prudent step to avoid any potential travel disruptions.

I had a great stay here. The front of the hotel is not nice but the design room is very romantic and convenient. Each of the different design rooms has a bathtub to relax after a day of tiring to the hotel. The window is small and tall so the view is not very wide. Dining room in the basement. Can't look outside the plants but in return there's a very cute model horse.
