Grand Hilai Resort is highly recommended for Sun Moon Lake. Besides a spectacular view, I was impressed with the quality of food at this resort. The room had a modern decor with direct views of the lake from the balcony and the thermal pool.

Discover Zhongliao: Taiwan's Serene Escape for the Discerning Traveller

Taiwan, an island nation celebrated for its dynamic cities and breathtaking natural landscapes, offers a diverse array of experiences for international visitors. Beyond the bustling metropolises, regions like Zhongliao present a more tranquil and authentic encounter with Taiwanese culture and scenery. Zhongliao, located within the verdant embrace of Nantou County, provides a refreshing contrast to the urban energy, inviting travellers to explore its rolling hills, serene tea plantations, and the tranquil beauty of nearby natural wonders. It’s a destination that rewards those who seek a deeper connection with nature and a slower pace of life, offering a unique perspective on Taiwan's multifaceted appeal.

The charm of Zhongliao is not monolithic; it unfolds across a tapestry of distinct neighbourhoods, each offering a unique flavour and atmosphere. From the iconic allure of Sun Moon Lake, with its shimmering waters and lakeside resorts, to the more grounded, community-focused vibes of Puli and Ren'ai, the region caters to varied preferences. Further afield, areas like Xinyi and Lugu offer glimpses into rural life and traditional industries. Understanding these nuances is key for any international visitor, as choosing where to base oneself in Zhongliao can profoundly shape the entire travel experience, from the accessibility of attractions to the local ambiance encountered daily.

For travellers from the Philippines, Zhongliao presents an accessible yet distinct international escape. With an average starting price that can be remarkably competitive, especially when compared to more established tourist hubs, Zhongliao offers excellent value. While specific pricing for Zhongliao itself can fluctuate, understanding that a comfortable stay can be found for as little as ₱2,700 per night, with more luxurious options available, positions it as an attractive destination for those seeking quality experiences without the premium price tag often associated with international travel. This affordability, coupled with Taiwan's robust infrastructure, makes it a compelling choice for Filipino explorers.

Within Zhongliao, accommodation options range from charming guesthouses to well-appointed hotels, reflecting the region's diverse appeal. For instance, the Hope Seeing Lohas Camp School, a 2-star property in Zhongliao itself, offers a unique lodging experience with a rating of 9.4, indicating high guest satisfaction despite its modest classification. This property, with its array of services like limo or town car service and a health club, exemplifies the unexpected quality and thoughtful amenities that can be found even in more budget-friendly accommodations. For travellers looking to secure their stay, exploring options like this is a great starting point to book hotel rooms that fit their needs and budget.

Zhongliao is a destination that speaks to a wide spectrum of international travellers. For those from the United States and Europe, it offers a chance to explore a less-trodden path in Asia, rich in natural beauty and cultural depth, providing a serene counterpoint to more frequented destinations. Indian travellers will find Taiwan’s efficient transport, diverse culinary scene, and generally welcoming atmosphere appealing, with Zhongliao offering a peaceful retreat. African travellers, while perhaps less commonly visiting Taiwan, can discover a region that showcases a unique blend of tradition and modernity, with opportunities for cultural immersion and natural exploration that resonate with a desire for discovery.

Best Areas to Stay in Zhongliao

Zhongliao, while a region rather than a single city, is comprised of distinct areas, each offering a unique character and set of attractions that can significantly influence your travel experience. For international visitors, understanding these nuances is crucial for selecting the ideal base. Whether you seek the iconic vistas of Sun Moon Lake, the cultural hub of Puli, or the tranquil charm of smaller towns like Lugu, choosing the right neighbourhood ensures your trip aligns with your expectations for scenery, activities, and local immersion.

Sun Moon Lake

Sun Moon Lake is undoubtedly the crown jewel of the Zhongliao region, drawing visitors with its breathtaking natural beauty and serene atmosphere. This area is perfect for travellers seeking a picturesque escape, offering stunning lake views, opportunities for cycling, boat tours, and exploring indigenous culture. It appeals particularly to couples and families looking for a relaxing yet engaging holiday, with many high-end resorts and charming B&Bs dotting its shores. The vibe here is one of tranquil grandeur, where natural splendour takes centre stage, making it a prime choice for those wanting to unwind amidst spectacular scenery.

From Sun Moon Lake, visitors have easy access to a wealth of activities. Boat tours across the lake, cycling along its scenic paths, and visiting the Wenwu Temple or the Ci En Pagoda are popular choices. For those seeking adventure, hiking trails abound, and the nearby Ita Thao village offers a glimpse into the local Thao indigenous culture. Getting to Sun Moon Lake from major international airports in Taiwan typically involves a combination of high-speed rail and bus or taxi, a journey that can be part of the adventure itself. For those eager to explore these wonders, you can book attractions and tours in advance.

Puli

Puli serves as a vibrant cultural and artistic hub within the Zhongliao region, known for its paper crafts, wineries, and a lively town centre. This area is ideal for travellers who appreciate a blend of local culture, artisanal experiences, and a more grounded, less tourist-centric atmosphere than Sun Moon Lake. It attracts visitors interested in exploring Taiwan's creative spirit, from visiting paper-making studios to sampling local produce. Puli offers a more authentic slice of Taiwanese life, making it a great base for those who enjoy exploring towns and engaging with local communities.

The practical advantages of staying in Puli include its central location, making it a convenient starting point for exploring other parts of Nantou County. Visitors can explore the Puli Brewery, the Chung Tai Chan Monastery, and numerous art galleries and craft shops. The town also boasts a good selection of local eateries and markets. Access to Puli is straightforward, typically involving a train or bus journey from major cities, and once there, local buses and taxis are readily available for getting around and reaching nearby attractions.

Ren'ai

Ren'ai Township, encompassing areas like Cingjing Farm, offers a unique alpine experience within the Zhongliao region, characterized by its cool climate, rolling grasslands, and European-style charm. This area is a magnet for nature lovers and those seeking a refreshing escape from warmer climes, appealing to families and couples alike. The serene landscapes and opportunities for outdoor activities like hiking and horseback riding make it a distinctive choice for travellers looking for something beyond the typical tropical or lakeside vacation.

Staying in Ren'ai provides access to attractions such as Cingjing Farm, known for its sheep shearing shows and picturesque meadows, and the nearby Hehuanshan National Forest Recreation Area, famous for its stunning mountain vistas and stargazing opportunities. The area's cooler temperatures make it a welcome retreat. Travel to Ren'ai usually involves a bus journey from Puli or other major transit points, and local transport options are available for exploring the scattered attractions within the township.

Lugu

Lugu Township is renowned for its high-quality tea production, particularly its Dong Ding Oolong tea, offering a tranquil and aromatic experience for visitors. This area is perfect for tea enthusiasts and those seeking a peaceful immersion in Taiwan's agricultural heritage. It appeals to travellers who appreciate quiet exploration, scenic tea plantations, and the opportunity to learn about and sample some of the island's most celebrated teas. The pace of life in Lugu is slow and contemplative, ideal for a restorative break.

From Lugu, visitors can explore numerous tea farms, participate in tea tasting sessions, and learn about the intricate process of tea cultivation and production. The area also offers opportunities for gentle hiking through tea fields and enjoying the serene rural landscapes. Lugu is accessible by bus from nearby cities, and while public transport within the township might be limited, it’s well-suited for a relaxed exploration of its primary draw: tea culture.

Zhongliao (Township Proper)

The township of Zhongliao itself offers a more grounded and local experience, away from the major tourist draws but still rich in authentic Taiwanese charm. This area is suitable for travellers who prefer to experience everyday life, explore local markets, and find more budget-friendly accommodation options. It appeals to those who want to step off the beaten path and discover the quieter, more residential side of the region, offering a genuine glimpse into local community life.

Staying in Zhongliao township provides access to local temples, traditional markets, and a more laid-back atmosphere. It’s a good base for exploring the surrounding countryside and smaller villages. While it may not have the headline attractions of Sun Moon Lake, it offers a more intimate connection with the region. Transport within Zhongliao township is best managed with local buses or taxis, and it serves as a convenient point for accessing other parts of Nantou County.

Food & Dining

What to Eat and Where to Find It in Zhongliao

Zhongliao, located within Taiwan's verdant landscapes, offers a culinary journey that reflects the island's rich gastronomic heritage. While it may not boast the sheer variety of Taipei, the region presents authentic Taiwanese flavours with a focus on fresh, local ingredients. Signature dishes often include hearty noodle soups, flavourful braised pork rice (Lu Rou Fan), and an abundance of fresh seafood, especially around the Sun Moon Lake area. Don't miss trying the local tea-infused delicacies, a nod to the region's famous tea plantations, offering a unique taste of Zhongliao's agricultural bounty.

For an authentic taste of Zhongliao, exploring local night markets and traditional eateries is a must. The Puli Night Market is a popular spot, offering a vibrant atmosphere and a wide array of street food. Around Sun Moon Lake, waterfront restaurants provide fresh catches of the day, often prepared with local herbs and spices. For Muslim travellers, finding Halal-certified eateries might require some research, but many restaurants are accommodating and can prepare dishes without pork or lard upon request, especially if you communicate your needs clearly.

The cost of dining in Zhongliao offers excellent value for international travellers. Street food snacks can be enjoyed for as little as ₱100-₱200 (approximately USD 2-4). A meal at a casual local restaurant typically ranges from ₱400-₱800 (approximately USD 8-16), while more upscale dining experiences, particularly in resorts around Sun Moon Lake, might cost between ₱1,500-₱3,000 (approximately USD 30-60) per person. Meal times are similar to Western schedules, with lunch typically between 12 PM and 2 PM, and dinner from 6 PM to 8 PM. It's polite to wait for your host to begin eating, and finishing your meal is seen as a compliment to the chef. Learning a few basic Mandarin phrases like "xièxie" (thank you) can go a long way in showing appreciation.

Local Etiquette & Safety

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Zhongliao

Understanding local etiquette is key to a respectful and enjoyable visit to Zhongliao. Taiwanese culture generally values politeness, respect, and harmony. It's common to see people queuing patiently, speaking softly in public, and showing deference to elders. While tourist areas are accustomed to international visitors, dressing modestly when visiting temples or more traditional sites is appreciated. A simple nod or a slight bow can be a polite greeting, and always ask permission before taking close-up photos of individuals.

When exploring Zhongliao, particularly its natural attractions and cultural sites, maintaining a respectful demeanour is important. At temples, dress conservatively, covering shoulders and knees. Photography is usually permitted, but always check for signs indicating otherwise. When visiting tea plantations or rural areas, be mindful of private property and agricultural activities. In general, Taiwanese people are friendly and helpful, so don't hesitate to ask for assistance if needed, but always approach with a polite and calm attitude.

Safety in Zhongliao is generally very high, with low crime rates making it a secure destination for international travellers. However, as with any travel, it's wise to take standard precautions. In case of emergencies, the general emergency number in Taiwan is 110 for police and 119 for fire and ambulance services. While there isn't a Philippine Embassy in Zhongliao itself, the Philippine Economic and Cultural Office (PECO) in Taipei serves as the de facto embassy for Filipinos in Taiwan. It's wise to have their contact details handy. For Filipino travellers, registering with the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and considering travel insurance are recommended steps for added peace of mind during your trip.

Travel Guide

Getting to Zhongliao and Getting Around

For travellers from the Philippines, reaching Zhongliao involves flying into Taiwan's main international airports, typically Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) near Taipei or Taichung International Airport (RMQ). Flights from Manila (MNL) or Cebu (CEB) to these airports are frequent, with options ranging from direct flights to those with one stopover, usually in Hong Kong or other regional hubs. Flight durations can vary from approximately 3.5 to 6 hours for direct flights, with connecting flights taking longer. Booking your book flight in advance can secure better fares, often starting from around ₱8,000 to ₱15,000 round trip, depending on the season and airline.

Once you land in Taiwan, reaching Zhongliao requires further travel. From TPE or RMQ, you can take a high-speed rail (HSR) or regular train to Taichung Station. From Taichung, local buses or taxis are readily available to take you to Zhongliao township or the popular Sun Moon Lake area, with journey times varying from 1 to 2 hours. Within Zhongliao and its surrounding areas like Sun Moon Lake, local buses are the most economical way to get around, though taxis and ride-sharing services are also available for more direct travel. Renting a scooter or bicycle is also a popular option for exploring specific areas like the Sun Moon Lake circuit.

The best time to visit Zhongliao is generally during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) months. During these periods, the weather is pleasant, with mild temperatures and lower humidity, making it ideal for outdoor activities and sightseeing. Spring brings blooming flowers, while autumn offers vibrant foliage and comfortable conditions for exploring tea plantations and hiking trails. Summer (June to August) can be hot and humid with a higher chance of typhoons, while winter (December to February) is cooler and can be misty, especially in the mountainous areas.

Before your trip to Zhongliao, ensure you have your passport, which should be valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay. The local currency is the New Taiwan Dollar (NTD), and while credit cards are widely accepted in hotels and larger establishments, carrying some cash is essential for smaller shops, markets, and local transport. Consider purchasing a local SIM card at the airport for easy data access. Essential apps to download include Google Maps for navigation, Google Translate for communication, and Traveloka for booking accommodations and activities.

Visa Information

Visa Requirements for Philippine Passport Holders Entering Taiwan

For Filipino passport holders planning a trip to Zhongliao, understanding Taiwan's visa policy is crucial. As of recent regulations, Philippine citizens are eligible for visa-free entry into Taiwan for tourism purposes, provided they meet specific conditions. This visa-free status typically allows for a stay of up to 14 days. Key requirements include a passport valid for at least six months beyond the intended stay, a confirmed return ticket, and proof of accommodation. It is imperative to check the latest official announcements from Taiwan's Bureau of Consular Affairs or the Philippine Economic and Cultural Office (PECO) in Taipei, as policies can change.

The application process for visa-free entry is straightforward, as no prior application is needed. Upon arrival at the immigration counter in Taiwan, travellers will be asked to present their valid passport, return flight details, and potentially hotel bookings or sufficient funds to cover their stay. While there are no visa fees for this visa-free entry, travellers should be prepared for potential scrutiny and ensure all documentation is in order. It is always recommended to have printed copies of your flight itinerary and hotel reservations readily accessible.

Given that visa policies are subject to change, it is strongly advised for all Philippine passport holders to verify the most current entry requirements directly with Taiwan's immigration authorities or the PECO in Taipei well before their travel dates. Confirming your eligibility and understanding any specific conditions for visa-free entry is essential to avoid any issues upon arrival. While booking flights and accommodations is exciting, it is prudent to ensure your travel plans align with Taiwan's immigration regulations before making non-refundable bookings.
