Me and my friends stayed 3 nights here for our holiday in Chiang Rai. The hotel is in a very good location, close to the night market and also within walking distance to the beautiful Clock Tower. Make sure you come there at 7 PM, 8 PM, and 9 PM, there will be a light show on the clock with music. The breakfast is also delicious with plenty of options. I would recommend this hotel and we would love to come back again when visiting Chiang Rai again in the future.

What to Eat and Where to Find It in Wiang

Wiang's culinary scene is a delightful exploration of Northern Thai flavours, distinct from the more widely known central Thai dishes. A must-try is Khao Soi, a rich and creamy coconut curry noodle soup, often served with crispy fried noodles on top – a true regional specialty. Another local favourite is Sai Oua, a flavourful Northern Thai sausage packed with herbs and spices, perfect grilled and enjoyed with sticky rice. For those with a sweet tooth, Mango Sticky Rice, while available throughout Thailand, often features particularly fresh and sweet mangoes here.

The Chiang Rai Night Bazaar is a prime location for experiencing Wiang's street food culture, offering a vast array of local delicacies at affordable prices. Here, you can sample grilled meats, fresh spring rolls, and various noodle dishes. For a more sit-down experience, explore the smaller eateries and restaurants in the Wiang Town Centre, which often serve authentic regional cuisine. Muslim travellers will find that while dedicated Halal restaurants might be fewer, many establishments are accommodating; looking for dishes prepared with fresh ingredients and clear labelling is advisable.

Dining in Wiang offers excellent value for money. Street food can be enjoyed for as little as ₱ 50-100 per meal, providing a filling and delicious experience. Mid-range restaurants typically charge between ₱ 200-500 for a main course, offering a comfortable dining atmosphere. Even upscale dining experiences are considerably more affordable than in many Western countries, with a multi-course meal rarely exceeding ₱ 1,500. This affordability allows travellers to explore a wide range of culinary options without significant budget concerns.

When dining in Wiang, it's helpful to be aware of local customs. While tipping is not mandatory, a small tip of 10-20 Baht for exceptional service at restaurants is appreciated. It's customary to use your right hand when giving or receiving food or money. Many locals eat with a spoon and fork, with the fork used to push food onto the spoon. Embrace the communal dining style, where dishes are often shared, and don't hesitate to ask for recommendations from restaurant staff for an authentic taste of Wiang.

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Wiang

Understanding local customs is key to a respectful and enjoyable visit to Wiang. The Thai concept of "sanuk" – finding joy and fun in everyday activities – permeates daily life. It's polite to greet people with a "wai," a slight bow with palms pressed together, especially when meeting elders or monks. While Wiang is generally relaxed, dressing modestly when visiting temples, covering shoulders and knees, is essential. Avoid touching people on the head, as it's considered the most sacred part of the body.

When visiting popular spots like the Chiang Rai Night Bazaar or Lao Khan (Tiger Vibe) Wine Bar & Eatery, maintaining a respectful demeanour is important. Bargaining is common at markets, but always do so with a smile and good humour; aggressive haggling is frowned upon. Photography is usually permitted, but it's courteous to ask permission before taking close-up photos of individuals. At the wine bar, observe local drinking customs and be mindful of noise levels, especially in more residential areas.

Wiang is generally a safe destination for international travellers, but standard precautions apply. Keep your valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas like markets. For transportation, reputable taxi services and ride-hailing apps like Grab are available and generally reliable. Stick to well-lit and populated areas at night. If you encounter any issues, the tourist police are a valuable resource, and their contact information can usually be found at your hotel or local information centres.

For Filipino travellers, it's crucial to be prepared for emergencies. Ensure you have comprehensive travel insurance. In case of urgent medical needs, seek assistance from your hotel or local emergency services (dial 1669 for ambulance). The Philippine Embassy in Bangkok is the primary point of contact for consular assistance; it's advisable to have their contact details readily available. Familiarize yourself with any advisories issued by the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) before your departure.

Getting to Wiang and Getting Around

Reaching Wiang from the Philippines typically involves flying into Chiang Rai International Airport (CEI), which serves the wider Wiang region. Flights from Manila (MNL) or Cebu (CEB) will usually involve at least one stopover, often in Bangkok (BKK). The total travel time can range from 6 to 10 hours, depending on the layover duration. While direct flights are uncommon, Traveloka can help you find the most convenient options and book flight tickets that fit your schedule and budget, with prices often starting around ₱ 8,000-15,000 round trip.

Once you arrive at Chiang Rai International Airport, you have several options to reach your accommodation in Wiang. Taxis are readily available outside the arrivals hall and offer a direct, albeit more expensive, route. For a more budget-friendly approach, consider shared minivans or pre-booking a transfer service, which can be arranged through your hotel or online platforms. The journey from the airport to the main areas of Wiang typically takes about 20-40 minutes, depending on traffic and your specific destination.

The best time to visit Wiang is generally during the cool and dry season, from November to February. During these months, the weather is pleasant, with average temperatures ranging from 20-25°C, making it ideal for outdoor activities and exploring the region. The shoulder seasons, March to May (hot) and June to October (rainy), can also be attractive, with fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices, though the heat in the hot season can be intense, and the rainy season may bring occasional downpours.

Before you depart for Wiang, ensure you have your passport, which must be valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay. The local currency is the Thai Baht (THB). While major credit cards are accepted in hotels and larger establishments, carrying some cash for markets and smaller vendors is essential. Purchasing a local SIM card at the airport is recommended for easy data access and communication. Essential apps to download include Google Maps, a translation app, and Grab for ride-hailing.

Visa Information for Entering Thailand to Visit Wiang

Philippine passport holders can enter Thailand for tourism purposes visa-free for a stay of up to 30 days. This exemption is part of a bilateral agreement between the Philippines and Thailand. Your passport must be valid for at least six months from your date of entry into Thailand, and you should be prepared to show proof of onward travel, such as a return or onward flight ticket, and potentially proof of sufficient funds for your stay.

While visa-free entry is straightforward, it's always prudent to confirm the latest regulations with the Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate in the Philippines before your travel dates, as policies can be subject to change. Ensure your passport has sufficient blank pages for entry and exit stamps. The DFA also advises travellers to check their passport's condition and validity well in advance of their trip to avoid any last-minute issues at immigration.

For any extended stays beyond the 30-day visa-free period, or for purposes other than tourism, you will need to apply for the appropriate visa in advance from the Royal Thai Embassy in Manila. This process typically involves submitting an application form, passport photos, passport copies, and supporting documents such as a letter of invitation or proof of accommodation. It is highly recommended to book flight tickets only after confirming your visa status if an extended stay is planned.
