This was my first stay and I was very impressed. The room looked great. I stayed in a room with a view, and it was very clean. If you like dimly lit rooms, this is the place. The counter staff were lovely, friendly, and always smiling. The housekeeping was excellent, and the air conditioning was very cold. It was fantastic to get such a great room for under 100,000 baht.

I stayed with them for one night in preparation for my bus ride back to Bangkok. I really loved the place—it’s strategically located and super convenient, especially if you’re taking the bus back to Bangkok. It’s also great value for money. The room and hotel were very clean, and the staff were wonderful—so kind and helpful. When I was there, it wasn’t too crowded yet, but I genuinely hope they get more foot traffic because they offer such good value. Another bonus is the Big C right in front of the hotel, and it’s also very close to Robinsons.

A Taste of Northern Thailand: Chiang Rai's Culinary Delights

Chiang Rai's culinary landscape is a rich reflection of its Lanna heritage, offering distinct flavours and dishes that set it apart from other regions in Thailand. Travellers can savour the unique tastes of Northern Thai cuisine, often characterized by its use of herbs, spices, and less reliance on coconut milk compared to central Thai dishes. The region is particularly famous for its Khao Soi, a creamy, curry-based noodle soup that is a must-try for any visitor.

Beyond Khao Soi, exploring local markets and eateries reveals other regional specialties. Sai Oua (Northern Thai sausage) is a flavourful grilled sausage packed with herbs, while Nam Ngiao is a spicy noodle soup often made with pork or beef and topped with fermented soybean paste. For those interested in vegetarian or Halal options, while not as widespread as in larger cities, many restaurants are becoming more accommodating, and seeking out dishes with rice, vegetables, and tofu can be a good strategy.

Dining in Chiang Rai offers excellent value for international travellers. Street food and local eateries can provide a delicious meal for as little as ₱ 50-100 (approximately $1-2 USD), while mid-range restaurants might charge ₱ 200-500 (approximately $4-10 USD) per person for a full meal. Even upscale dining experiences are generally more affordable than in Western countries, making Chiang Rai an accessible destination for food enthusiasts from the Philippines, India, and beyond.

When dining in Chiang Rai, embracing local customs enhances the experience. It's customary to use the spoon and fork provided, with the fork used to push food onto the spoon. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for excellent service, with a small amount (around 10-20 THB) being customary. Be open to trying new dishes and flavours; the local cuisine is a significant part of the cultural exploration that Chiang Rai offers to its visitors.

Local Etiquette & Safety in Chiang Rai

Navigating Chiang Rai with Cultural Sensitivity and Awareness

Understanding and respecting local customs is paramount for a smooth and enriching visit to Chiang Rai. The Thai people are generally known for their politeness and gentle nature, and observing basic etiquette will be greatly appreciated. A common greeting is the 'wai,' a prayer-like gesture with hands pressed together, often accompanied by a slight bow, which is used to show respect to elders, monks, and even as a general greeting.

When visiting temples like Wat Phra Kaew and Wat Chedi Luang, dress modestly. This means covering shoulders and knees; shorts and sleeveless tops are generally not permitted. It's customary to remove your shoes before entering temple buildings or private homes. While photography is usually allowed, always be mindful of your surroundings and avoid taking pictures of people without their permission, especially monks during their prayers or meditation.

Chiang Rai is considered a safe city for travellers, but standard precautions should always be taken. Keep your valuables secure, especially in crowded markets or on public transport. For transportation, ride-hailing apps like Grab are available and offer a convenient and relatively safe way to get around. Negotiate fares for tuk-tuks or songthaews before starting your journey to avoid misunderstandings. The city is generally well-lit and safe for walking in tourist areas at night.

In case of emergencies, dial 191 for general police assistance. For medical emergencies, contact the local hospital. While there isn't a Philippine Embassy in Chiang Rai, the Philippine Embassy in Bangkok is the primary point of contact for Filipino citizens requiring consular assistance. It's always advisable for Filipino travellers to register their travel plans with the DFA and consider travel insurance for peace of mind, covering potential medical or unforeseen circumstances.
