This was my first stay and I was very impressed. The room looked great. I stayed in a room with a view, and it was very clean. If you like dimly lit rooms, this is the place. The counter staff were lovely, friendly, and always smiling. The housekeeping was excellent, and the air conditioning was very cold. It was fantastic to get such a great room for under 100,000 baht.

The accommodation is near important places, convenient to go to various restaurants. The staff have service mind in every department, from security guards, receptionists, housekeepers. The room is spacious, new, very clean, has a comfortable desk, has a bathrobe and slippers, most importantly, the bathroom has very strong water flow, suitable for washing hair. I asked for a special breakfast, 2 boiled eggs, and they served it without any reluctance.

Me and my friends stayed 3 nights here for our holiday in Chiang Rai. The hotel is in a very good location, close to the night market and also within walking distance to the beautiful Clock Tower. Make sure you come there at 7 PM, 8 PM, and 9 PM, there will be a light show on the clock with music. The breakfast is also delicious with plenty of options. I would recommend this hotel and we would love to come back again when visiting Chiang Rai again in the future.

come on family trip everyone was very impressed Especially the youngsters, the staff are all really good. Breakfast buffet. During covid, there may be few options. But there are still options. food always filling The room has 2 pillows per bed. We sleep in twin. If sleeping in a double bed, there are 4 pieces. The bed is good, not too tight, not too soft, sucks a lot of souls, sleeps comfortably, cool air conditioner, strong water flow, bathroom equipment, good use. The room was spotless. If the price is not over 1000 per room, I think this is the best place to stay in Chiang Rai // We use the room for just sleeping and having breakfast. If anyone likes a hotel with a beautiful view There is a shady garden Here may not answer the question. But if you want a good rest Breakfast has quite a variety. good service staff I guarantee you won't be disappointed 👍

Like the accommodation Our father watched so big that he had to pass a cheap price and still have breakfast. In the heart of the city Prices like this can't be found. The quality of the room is very good. Breakfast each day is a sausage, fried eggs, boiled pork, very tasty. The housekeeper, the owner of the house, is cute and friendly. Very private. For anyone who will stay at this price Don't think a lot. Because only breakfast is worth it

Service is very good. Impressed. The hostel is not very big, but the facilities are provided. Small but cute TV. There is a full list of channels. Free 2 bottles of water in the room is not enough to add more to the central hall. Of the hotel There are bicycles to ride around to see the city. Breakfast is traditional. Everything is delicious There are 4 parking spaces, which is recommended to rent a motorbike, better than the bed, pillows are very soft, the air conditioner is cold, the water flow is strong, recommend to stay

More about hotels in Wiang

Wiang: A Cultural Crossroads for the Discerning Filipino Traveller

For travellers from the Philippines seeking a destination that blends rich cultural heritage with accessible charm, Wiang in Thailand offers a compelling alternative to the more frequented tourist hubs. While Thailand is renowned for its bustling metropolises and idyllic islands, Wiang presents a more intimate and authentic glimpse into the Lanna Kingdom's legacy. It’s a place where ancient temples stand as silent sentinels to a vibrant present, and where the warmth of local hospitality is as palpable as the tropical breeze. For those accustomed to the dynamic energy of Manila or the serene beauty of Palawan, Wiang provides a refreshing change of pace, inviting exploration at a more leisurely rhythm.

The allure of Wiang is amplified by its diverse internal landscape, a mosaic of distinct neighbourhoods each offering a unique flavour of Northern Thai life. From the historical heart around the Chiang Rai Clock Tower, buzzing with local activity and cultural landmarks, to the vibrant energy of the Chiang Rai Night Bazaar, a sensory delight for shoppers and foodies, the choice of where to base yourself significantly shapes your journey. Even within the broader Wiang area, subtle shifts in atmosphere can be detected, from tranquil riverside enclaves to more urbanised pockets. Understanding these nuances is key to unlocking the full potential of your visit.

From a value perspective, Wiang presents an attractive proposition for international travellers, including those from the Philippines. With a starting price point around ₱374.60 per night, it offers a significantly more budget-friendly experience compared to many Western destinations or even some of Thailand's more established tourist hotspots. This affordability extends to dining and activities, allowing travellers to stretch their PHP further and enjoy a richer, more immersive experience without compromising on quality or comfort. For Filipino travellers, this translates to more opportunities to explore, indulge, and create lasting memories.

Wiang's accommodation scene mirrors its diverse appeal, offering a spectrum of choices to suit every preference and budget. Whether you're drawn to the convenience of hotels near the Chiang Rai Clock Tower, perfect for easy access to historical sites, or the lively atmosphere of the Chiang Rai Night Bazaar, ideal for evening strolls and culinary adventures, there's a perfect base waiting for you. The availability of options, from budget-friendly guesthouses to more upscale boutique hotels, ensures that finding a place to stay that aligns with your travel style is straightforward. You can easily book hotel accommodations that fit your needs.

Ultimately, Wiang is a destination that caters to a broad spectrum of international travellers. For Americans and Europeans, it offers a deep dive into Thai culture, history, and spirituality, with opportunities for serene contemplation and exploration of ancient Lanna architecture. Indian travellers will find familiar flavours in the local cuisine, alongside excellent value for money and convenient flight connections. African travellers, while perhaps less commonly visiting this specific region, can appreciate Wiang's blend of tradition and modernity, offering a unique perspective on Southeast Asian urban life and a welcoming environment for exploration.

Best Areas to Stay in Wiang

Wiang, while a distinct region, is comprised of several neighbourhoods, each offering a unique character and set of attractions that can significantly influence your travel experience. For international visitors, understanding these areas is crucial for selecting the ideal base that aligns with your interests, whether you're seeking cultural immersion, vibrant nightlife, or tranquil relaxation. From the historical core to bustling market districts, Wiang provides a varied urban tapestry, and choosing the right neighbourhood ensures you're perfectly positioned to explore its many facets.

Wiang (Central District)

The heart of Wiang, often referred to simply as Wiang or Mueang Chiang Rai, is where many of the city's administrative and commercial activities converge. This central district offers a blend of modern conveniences and traditional Thai life, making it a practical choice for many travellers. You'll find a good mix of local eateries, shops, and services, providing a convenient base for exploring further afield. It's particularly well-suited for travellers who appreciate being in the midst of local activity and having easy access to essential amenities.

From this central hub, accessing key landmarks is straightforward. The area is well-served by local transport, making it easy to reach attractions like the Wat Phra Kaew and Wat Phra Singh, which are significant cultural sites. For those staying in the Wiang district, exploring the local markets for authentic Thai street food is a must. The proximity to transport links also facilitates day trips to surrounding natural attractions, offering a balanced experience of urban exploration and natural beauty.

Chiang Rai Clock Tower Area

The Chiang Rai Clock Tower area is a focal point of the city, known for its distinctive landmark and its role as a gathering place. This district offers a lively atmosphere, especially in the evenings, and is a popular spot for both locals and tourists. Hotels here often provide easy access to the city's cultural sites and a good selection of dining options. It's an area that appeals to travellers who enjoy being in a central, active part of town, with plenty to see and do within walking distance.

Staying near the Chiang Rai Clock Tower means you're close to several important temples and historical points of interest. The area is also a gateway to exploring the wider Wiang region. For travellers interested in experiencing the local pulse, this district offers a vibrant setting. You can easily book attractions and tours that depart from or pass through this central location, making it a convenient starting point for your adventures.

Chiang Rai Night Bazaar

The Chiang Rai Night Bazaar is synonymous with vibrant evening life, offering a sensory feast of sights, sounds, and smells. This district is a shopper's destination, filled with stalls selling local handicrafts, clothing, and souvenirs, alongside a vast array of food vendors. The atmosphere is energetic and bustling, making it an exciting place to stay for travellers who enjoy immersing themselves in local commerce and street food culture. It's particularly appealing to those who want to experience the lively side of Wiang after dark.

Accommodation in the Chiang Rai Night Bazaar area ranges from budget-friendly guesthouses to more comfortable hotels, all within easy reach of the market's offerings. Beyond shopping, the area is a culinary hotspot, with countless opportunities to sample authentic Northern Thai dishes. Its central location also makes it a convenient base for exploring other parts of Wiang, with good access to public transport for venturing further afield to discover more of the region's cultural and natural wonders.

Wiang, Mueang Chiang Rai (General Central Area)

This designation often refers to the broader central area of Wiang, encompassing a mix of residential, commercial, and tourist-oriented zones. It's a versatile area that can offer a quieter experience than the immediate vicinity of major landmarks, while still providing convenient access to amenities and transport. Travellers who prefer a slightly more laid-back environment but still want to be close to the city's attractions will find this area appealing. It’s a good option for those seeking a balance between accessibility and local charm.

Within this general central area, you can find a variety of hotels and guesthouses catering to different budgets. The advantage here is the potential for discovering more local, less tourist-centric dining spots and shops. It’s also a good starting point for exploring the region's natural beauty, with easy access to roads leading out of the city towards scenic landscapes and cultural sites. What to Eat and Where to Find It in Wiang

Wiang, set in the heart of Northern Thailand, boasts a culinary landscape as rich and diverse as its cultural heritage. The region's cuisine is a delightful fusion of traditional Lanna flavours, influenced by neighbouring Myanmar and Laos, offering a distinct taste profile that sets it apart from the more familiar central Thai dishes. For Filipino travellers, exploring Wiang's food scene is an adventure in itself, promising new textures, aromas, and tastes that are both exotic and surprisingly approachable, often with a comforting familiarity in their use of fresh ingredients and aromatic spices.

The culinary heart of Wiang beats strongest in its local markets and street food stalls, particularly around areas like the Chiang Rai Night Bazaar. Here, you can savour iconic Northern Thai specialities such as Khao Soi, a creamy, curry-based noodle soup that is a must-try, and Sai Oua, a flavourful grilled pork sausage infused with herbs. For Muslim travellers, while pork is prevalent, many establishments offer chicken or vegetarian alternatives, and seeking out restaurants that clearly label their ingredients or offer Halal certification is advisable. Exploring these vibrant food hubs provides an authentic taste of local life.

The affordability of dining in Wiang is a significant draw for international visitors. Street food meals can be enjoyed for as little as ₱50-₱100 (approximately $1-2 USD), offering incredible value. Mid-range restaurants serving local specialities typically range from ₱200-₱500 (approximately $4-10 USD) per person, while more upscale dining experiences might cost upwards of ₱800-₱1,500 (approximately $16-30 USD) for a multi-course meal. This makes Wiang an exceptionally budget-friendly destination for travellers from the US, Europe, and India, allowing for extensive culinary exploration.

Navigating dining etiquette in Wiang is straightforward and adds to the cultural experience. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for excellent service, with a small amount (around 10-20 THB) left on the table or added to the bill. It's customary to use your fork and spoon, with the spoon being the primary utensil for eating. When dining with locals, waiting for elders to start eating first is a sign of respect. Embrace the communal spirit of Thai dining, and don't hesitate to try new dishes – it's all part of the adventure.

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Wiang

Understanding and respecting local customs is paramount for a smooth and enriching travel experience in Wiang. Thai culture places a high value on politeness, respect for elders, and the concept of "saving face." This translates into a generally gentle and harmonious social environment, but it's important for visitors to be mindful of certain behaviours that might be perceived as disrespectful. For instance, the head is considered sacred, so avoid touching someone's head, and always remove your shoes before entering a home or temple.

When visiting popular sites like the Chiang Rai Clock Tower or the vicinity of hotels such as B2 Chiang Rai Boutique & Budget Hotel and Sann Hotel, maintaining a respectful demeanour is key. Dress modestly when visiting temples, covering shoulders and knees. While Wiang is generally a safe city, it's always wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded markets like the Chiang Rai Night Bazaar. Avoid loud or aggressive behaviour, as it can cause others to lose face and create an uncomfortable situation.

Practical safety in Wiang is largely about common sense. Keep your valuables secure and be wary of petty theft in busy tourist areas. For transportation, ride-hailing apps like Grab are widely available and offer a convenient and relatively safe way to get around, with prices often displayed upfront. Local taxis and tuk-tuks are also options, but it's advisable to agree on a fare before starting your journey. Having a local SIM card with data can be invaluable for navigation and communication, ensuring you can easily access maps and emergency services.

In case of emergencies, the tourist police can be a valuable resource. For urgent medical needs, local hospitals are equipped to handle most situations, and having travel insurance is highly recommended for Filipino travellers to cover any unforeseen medical expenses. While there isn't a Philippine Embassy in Wiang itself, the Philippine Embassy in Bangkok is the primary point of contact for consular assistance. It's wise to have their contact details readily available, along with those for the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) for any support needed.

Getting to Wiang and Getting Around

For travellers from the Philippines, reaching Wiang typically involves flying into Chiang Rai International Airport (CEI), which serves the wider Wiang region. Flights from Manila (NAIA/MNL) or Cebu (CEB) will usually involve at least one layover, often in Bangkok (BKK or DMK). Direct flights are uncommon, so expect a journey time of approximately 5 to 8 hours, depending on the layover duration. The cost of flights can vary significantly based on the season and how far in advance you book, but budget around ₱10,000 to ₱20,000 for a round trip. During these months, the weather is pleasant, with average temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C, making it ideal for outdoor exploration and sightseeing. This period coincides with peak tourist season, so expect larger crowds and potentially higher hotel prices, especially around Christmas and New Year. Before you depart for Wiang, ensure you have a few essentials sorted. The local currency is the Thai Baht (THB). While major credit cards are accepted in hotels and larger establishments, carrying some cash is essential for markets, street food vendors, and smaller shops. You can exchange your PHP for THB at the airport or in the city. Purchasing a local SIM card upon arrival at the airport is recommended for easy data access. Essential apps to download include Google Maps for navigation, a translation app, and Grab for transportation.

For Philippine passport holders planning a trip to Wiang, Thailand, the visa requirements are generally straightforward. Thailand offers visa-free entry for citizens of the Philippines for tourism purposes, allowing a stay of up to 30 days when arriving by air. This means you do not need to apply for a visa in advance or at the point of entry for short tourist stays. However, it is crucial to ensure your passport has at least six months of validity remaining from your intended date of departure from Thailand.

When entering Thailand, immigration officials may ask for proof of onward travel, such as a return flight ticket, and sufficient funds to cover your stay.
