It was a wonderful small cosy guesthouse. There's only 12 rooms. We arrived late at 8.15pm. You need to call the number at the reservation desk for the staff come in after 8pm (we had a local UK number so that was not a problem). We were given the top 2 rooms - room 11 and 12. It was 3 flight of stairs but we just had hand luggage. Good exercise. The view was great though and you can see York Minster in the distance. Room 12 was big with a large bathroom with a bathtub. Antique type of furnishings which we appreciated. Breakfast was a highlight - we had vegetarian - mushrooms, eggs, tomatoes and veggie sausage with toast plus fruits and yoghurt with muesli. All simple but somehow delicious. Breakfast was down in the basement. There are no lifts as expected in a guesthouse. Bus stop was just outside the hotel - bus no 10, 5, 1, 1a all go into town (10 minute ride) and you just purchase a 1 day pass. We enjoyed York as well with the picturesque mediaevel timber houses. However nearly all the attractions require a fee. We joined the Ghost tour but because it was at 4.30pm in early November - it wasn't quite night time till 5pm- roads were busy with people so we didn't feel spooked at all. The York Dungeon was much more fun and spooky and the children (our 11 and 13 year old) enjoyed that very much (however our 6 year old child was scared halfway and had to leave with his mother (it does mention that the York Dungeon tour is not suitable for 5-8 year olds).
