the room smelled very bad

The Buccaneer Inn was great value for money - as someone who grew up locally, I was a bit concerned about what I was getting into, but those fears were unfounded. The Inn has clearly worked toward sprucing up, with a tidy appearance and newer mattresses. The bathroom was very clean and surprisingly "sparkly" for an older hotel. The kitchen was decently kitted out for a hotel kitchen. The things that might crop up as issues - despite the windows appearing pretty new, the screens were ill fitting or bent in my room, so it's possible bugs could get in during hotter summer days. And it is near a high traffic road when ferries unload, so if bothered by traffic noise, that could be a problem for some. Same goes for seaplanes taking off (I loved that!). Plus people walking by the front window late at night aren't always the most considerate - but that's not the hotel's fault! Parking can be a bit tight depending on when you arrive, but there are a reasonable number of spots for units. Overall, would stay again. Coworkers asked where I was staying and to their surprise, I told everyone this was a perfectly viable option.

Loved our two night stay at this hotel! Friendly, helpful staff and an exceptionally clean room. Across from the motel is a boardwalk along the ocean channel. We strolled and enjoyed the boats and watched the seals. Will definitely stay again!

most everything was okay, however during our stay the outside temperature was less the 10 deg C during the night and there was no available heat in the room. The room used hot water heating and while I turned the valve to the maximum setting, no heat was to be had. Maybe we should use the stove?????

We didn’t have time to use the kitchen, but we walked down to the marina and ate at the pub (4 minute walk). We had a truck and trailer and had a spot to park. Staff were super helpful and our stay was very enjoyable. Thank you

We booked a cottage, it was very clean. And provided full set of utensils. The rooms are very cozy. We had a wonderful day staying there. I definitely will consider this place again for my next visits Nanaimo.😊

Clean, quiet and very close to the ferry terminal.

Their "Cottage" is really a 3 br, 1 bath house with washer and dryer and full kitchen (somewhat limited cooking utensils etc. but could make do) for staying many days that is reasonably updated with nice beds and decent furniture and parking right next to it. It is next to the rest of the Buccaneer Inn right on the main highway, so it is not secluded. Only the tiniest of peekaboo view of the harbor on the other side of the highway. So don't expect to be in a cottage in a forest or near a beach. The crosswalk across the highway is nearby and once across, nice walkway along the harbor and a very good Irish pub we went to 2 nights. So, on balance, a good value for the price and a good "base" for a visit to Nanaimo.

The Buccaneer worked perfectly for my wife and I. Helpful staff, spacious suite-like room, convenient location, and the best booklet with local information and tips we’ve ever seen!

Note that the property is pretty old, so you will sleep in smells of mold/old wood/old sewage system etc for the night. Not too strong tho, tolerable considering the price and location. Otherwise the place was fine. Spacious room, helpful and friendly staff, 3 min drive away from Departure Bay, nice Harbour view, quiet, etc.

We really liked the hotel. Great location, wonderful and helpful staff. Stairs were a little too much, but the thin wall were awful

Our stay was very much a motel stay and that’s what we expected, but the cleanliness of the room was disappointing. The bathroom floor looked like it hadn’t been cleaned very well, there was a big spot of something dried on the couch and the blanket that they gave us for the pull out couch appeared to not be washed as there was something dried on that as well. I wish I would have seen that there was no air conditioning. Keeping the windows open wasn’t an option as our room was accessible from the outside and being right beside a busy road caused lots of road noise.

The staff were helpful and professional. The room small and not much clean I wouldn’t pay more than hundred dollar for it.

We were on the bottom floor and the window didn’t lock, so that was on my mind half the night.

This is a lovely little property! The room was cozy and had everything that was needed. We would easily stay here again!

Spotless!

The access were dirty. I paid for double room but the chair and bowl was only one. The staff was not friendly.
