It’s not easy to make an ending of a popular story. There are memory and romanticism which have stuck in the heart and mind of its audience. Rano Karno is now trying to beat the challenge by making a closure for the legendary Si Doel through his new work, Si Doel The Movie 3: Akhir Kisah Cinta si Doel.

Si Doel The Movie is a movie based on its tv series Si Doel Anak Sekolahan, adapted from a novel titled Si Doel Anak Betawi by Aman Datuk Madjoindo. The series became one of the most popular tv series that had a lot of fans from the 90s to millennials generation.

Si Doel Anak Sekolahan had a long journey. It took 27 years to finish 162 tv episodes and 3 big-screen movies. Just like reminiscing the old days, Si Doel The Movie also brought the old casts from the tv series like Maknyak (Aminah Cendrakasih), Mandra (Mandra), and Atun (Suti Karno).

Not only that, this movie takes some memories back by showing the old oplet (taxi), a love story between Mandra and Munaroh (Maryati Tohir), visiting Sabeni’s graveyard (Doel’s father), to Zaenab’s arranged marriage with Koh Ahong (Salman Alfarizi). The appearance of those characters brings the audiences back to the old tv series.

On the big screen, Si Doel is made short without losing its originality. Although the conflicts showed are not as many as on the tv series, still, this story brings up the love triangle among Doel (Rano Karno), Zaenab (Maudy Koesnadi) dan Sarah (Cornelia Agatha).

Doel The Movie 3: Akhir Kisah Cinta Si Doel starts with a flashback of several scenes from the two previous movies. Zaenab, who’s pregnant, makes the problem more complex. The reason is that she has a miscarriage trauma and doesn’t want to experience it anymore.

Zaenab also feels that the problems she has with Doel keep making her feel guilty because of the threat from Sarah which can be dangerous for her pregnancy. This situation makes her leave Doel for a while. On the other side, Sarah has filed the divorce papers because of the guilt she has, leaving Doel without saying goodbye.

Confusion and never-ending problems keep coming in his life. He gets through that situation without anyone on his side. Luckily Dul (Rey Bong), his son from Sarah, is a great companion. Together with his son, he faces all the problems in his life. However, at the end of the day, he must choose between Zaenab or Sarah, someone that will spend her life with him.

The ending of a movie is something that most people are curious about and also brings a unique question. The question like who will he choose at the end can be interesting for audiences who have been keeping up with the stories. That’s why Rano Karno seems to be more careful yet make the story sweet in Si Doel.

Rano Karno as the director certainly knows that the ending of a story will affect audiences’ opinions. The choice of how to end the story is smart. He realizes that whatever the decision is, you just can’t please all audiences.
