Brisbane is a vibrant and cosmopolitan city that embodies the perfect blend of laid-back charm and urban sophistication. As the capital of Queensland, Australia, Brisbane boasts a subtropical climate, stunning landscapes, and a rich cultural scene that beckons visitors from around the world. From its bustling waterfront precincts to its lush parklands and thriving arts scene, Brisbane offers a dynamic and diverse experience for travellers seeking adventure, relaxation, and everything in between.

As Brisbane continues to expand, the demand for faster and more efficient public transportation is on the rise. The existing inner-city busway stations and CBD bus stops are often overcrowded during peak hours, leading to congestion, queues, and significant delays. Two-thirds of Brisbane's public transport users rely on buses. In addition to having one of the largest bus fleets in Australia, Brisbane has iconic services such as the CityCat river ferries and the Cross River ferry network.

Now, the city of Brisbane is about to have a transformative era in urban travel with the introduction of the Brisbane Metro. This innovative initiative by the Brisbane City Council promises to redefine connectivity, seamlessly linking the city centre to its vibrant suburbs and beyond. The Brisbane Metro is set to revolutionise how residents and visitors like you move around Brisbane, offering turn-up-and-go services that will provide frequent, reliable services that run 24 hours on weekends. The Brisbane Metro is promised to enhance connectivity, making it simpler for residents and visitors to reach their desired destinations.

The first stage of the Brisbane Metro project is underway, bringing two brand-new metro lines to the city. These lines will connect 18 stations along dedicated busways, stretching from Eight Mile Plains to Roma Street and the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital to the University of Queensland. The Brisbane Metro offers significant benefits for the city's transport network and urban planning:

Brisbane metro lines will alleviate congestion, creating a more efficient transport network.
Turn-up-and-go services operating 24/7 on weekends provide flexible travel options for commuters and visitors in Brisbane
Brisbane metro vehicles are all-electric with zero emissions contributing to a cleaner, greener urban environment
The Brisbane metro project will generate around 2600 jobs during design and construction, boosting employment and the local economy

Brisbane Metro Route

The Brisbane Metro route is 25 kilometres, connecting 18 stations along dedicated busways between Eight Mile Plains to Roma Street, and Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital to The University of Queensland. You can see the following map to see the metro routes in Brisbane.

The Brisbane Metro project encompasses two key routes that will significantly enhance public transportation within the city:

Metro 1: Eight Mile Plains to Roma Street

This route connects the southern suburbs of Brisbane, starting from Eight Mile Plains and extending to the bustling Roma Street station in the city centre. Along this corridor, the Brisbane Metro will serve several key stations, providing efficient and frequent services to commuters and visitors travelling between residential areas and the central business district.
Metro 2: Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital to The University of Queensland

The second route of the Brisbane Metro extends from the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital through the inner suburbs to the University of Queensland (UQ). This route will cater to students, faculty, and residents in the western part of the city, offering convenient access to educational institutions, medical facilities, and recreational areas.

Brisbane Metro will combine the best aspects of light rail and buses, offering a comfortable and convenient travel experience. Unlike traditional light rail, the Metro utilises existing bus lanes, eliminating the need for construction delays and track installation. The Metro will operate on a cashless fare system, enhancing the ease and efficiency of your journey.

With Brisbane Metro, you can step inside a spacious, bi-articulated Metro vehicle and enjoy ample room for 150 passengers and 170 passengers during peak times. Brisbane Metro prioritises accessibility too. Designed in collaboration with disability advocates, the Metro boasts more designated areas for wheelchairs and mobility aids, along with ample priority seating. Additionally, streamlined all-door alighting and boarding ensure convenient access to the Metro for passengers. You can also stay connected throughout your ride with in-built USB charging points and on-board Wi-Fi inside the Metro. Passenger information displays and next-stop audio and visual route information keep you informed of your journey. So, you will not get lost in Brisbane!

The Brisbane Metro incorporates advanced technology features designed to enhance efficiency, sustainability, and passenger experience. Operating on battery electric power, the Metro ensures zero tailpipe emissions, contributing to a cleaner urban environment. The Metro's quiet operation significantly reduces noise pollution compared to traditional transportation modes, promoting a more peaceful urban atmosphere. An onboard telematics system provides real-time travel information to passengers, ensuring they stay informed about their journey. Driver assistive technologies support safe operations, prioritising passenger safety.

The Metro's innovative design includes two of four axles propelled by electric motors, enabling front and rear wheel steering for optimal maneuverability. With flash charging capability in under six minutes at the end of the route, the Metro minimises downtime, maximising operational efficiency. Additionally, a regenerative braking system captures kinetic energy during braking, converting it into usable electricity, further enhancing the Metro's sustainability credentials. Through these cutting-edge technologies, the Brisbane Metro sets a new standard for eco-friendly, efficient, and modern urban transportation.
