Hokkaido by Season: The Complete Weather Guide and Best Destinations to Visit Year-Round

Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost main island, offers four seasons so distinct that the best time to visit depends entirely on what you want to see. Spring brings cherry blossoms in early May — weeks after mainland Japan's peak. Summer fills the highlands with lavender, sunflower, and wildflower fields. Autumn delivers some of Japan's most vivid foliage, and winter transforms the island into a world-class powder snow destination with festivals, onsen, and illuminated canal walks.

New Chitose Airport (CTS) near Sapporo is Hokkaido's main international gateway and is reachable from across Southeast Asia. Hiring a car rental is strongly recommended for areas like Furano and Biei, where the scenery unfolds across rolling country roads that no bus timetable can do justice to.

1. Sapporo — The Capital

When to Visit and What to Expect

Sapporo is one of the snowiest major cities on earth, receiving heavy annual snowfall that defines its winters. Winter (December–March) is the most celebrated season, with temperatures dropping to between −11°C and −7°C and the city buried in deep, photogenic snow.

Summer brings a completely different character: mild temperatures of 20–28°C, the Odori Park outdoor beer garden operating through July and August, and the city's parks at their liveliest. Cherry blossoms peak in early May — about six weeks later than Tokyo — making Sapporo a second chance for travellers who missed the mainland season. The Sapporo Lilac Festival fills Odori Park from late May through early June with the fragrance of approximately 400 blooming lilac trees.

Key Destinations in Sapporo

Sapporo rewards visitors across all four seasons, with a distinct set of highlights in each. The following are the city's most representative spots:

Sapporo Snow Festival — held annually in early February (4–11 Feb 2027); main venue at Odori Park (1-chome to 12-chome); colossal snow sculptures illuminated at night; additional ice sculptures at Susukino and family snow activities at Tsudome.
Odori Park — 1.5 km green boulevard through the city centre; hosts the Snow Festival (February), Lilac Festival (late May), and outdoor beer garden (July–August).
Sapporo Beer Museum — housed in a red-brick building from 1890; traces Japan's oldest beer brand, founded in 1876; tasting room open to visitors.

Book your flights into New Chitose Airport early — seats and accommodation across Hokkaido fill months in advance for the Snow Festival (January–February) and lavender season (July–August).

2. Otaru — The Port City

When to Visit and What to Expect

Otaru is beautiful in every season but at its most magical in winter. Snow settles on the old stone warehouses lining the canal, and the Snow Light Path Festival (Yukiakari no Michi) — held each year, specifically from 6–13 February in 2027., 17:00–21:00 — lines the canal path with small handcrafted candle-lit snow lanterns that create a soft, intimate atmosphere unlike any large-scale illumination event.

Summer brings pleasant temperatures around 20–25°C and fresh seafood at peak quality. Otaru is just 30 minutes from Sapporo by JR Rapid train, making it an effortless half-day addition to any Sapporo-based itinerary.

Key Destinations in Otaru

Otaru Canal — completed 1923 during the city's peak as Hokkaido's main shipping port; 1,140 m preserved heritage stretch; old stone warehouses now converted into restaurants, galleries, and shops; gas-lamp lit in the evenings.
Sakaimachi Street — Otaru's main shopping and craft street; lined with glasswork studios and shops offering handmade pieces from tumblers to decorative art objects.
Sushi restaurants — Otaru's fishing harbour supplies premium sea urchin (uni) and salmon roe (ikura); sushi here is notably fresher and less expensive than Tokyo counterparts.

3. Hakodate — The Southern Gateway

When to Visit and What to Expect

Hakodate sits at the southernmost tip of Hokkaido and has a milder climate than the rest of the island. Summers are comfortable at 20–24°C, and cherry blossoms arrive in late April — earlier than Sapporo — making it Hokkaido's best city for spring flower viewing.

The city's famous night view is stunning year-round, but especially sharp on cold, clear winter evenings when the air is crisp and the lights of the city reflect off the snow. Travel time from Sapporo is approximately 3 hours 30 minutes Limited Express Hokuto.

Key Destinations in Hakodate

Hakodate Morning Market (Asaichi) — opens at 5:00 AM daily (6:00 AM January–April); fresh crab, sea urchin, scallops, and squid sold steps from JR Hakodate Station; squid fishing experiences available on-site in summer.
Goryokaku Fort — Japan's first Western-style star-shaped fortress, built 1857–1866; over 1,500 cherry trees bloom around the moat in late April; best viewed from the adjacent 107 m Goryokaku Tower.
Mount Hakodate Ropeway — 3-minute cable car ride to the 334 m summit; offers one of Japan's Three Great Night Views — the city's distinctive figure-eight silhouette lit up after dark; operates until 21:50 in peak season.

4. Niseko — The Land of Powder Snow

When to Visit and What to Expect

Niseko's winter reputation rests on one meteorological fact: Siberian cold air masses cross the Sea of Japan, pick up moisture, and deposit it on Hokkaido's mountains as ultra-light, ultra-dry powder known internationally as "Japow." The resort receives an average of 12–15 metres of snowfall per season.

Mid-December through mid-February delivers the deepest and driest powder. Early-to-mid March offers excellent conditions with more sunshine and fewer crowds. Summer (June–August) brings temperatures of 15–22°C and a full programme of outdoor activities beneath the cone of Mount Yotei.

Key Destinations in Niseko

Niseko United — four interconnected ski resorts on a single all-mountain pass: Grand Hirafu (largest), Hanazono, Niseko Village, and Annupuri; terrain ranges from beginner-friendly groomed runs to challenging off-piste bowls..
Niseko onsen bathing — geothermal baths at multiple ryokan and resort hotels throughout the area; outdoor baths in snowfall are the defining Niseko winter experience.
Summer adventure activities — white-water rafting, gondola mountain biking, Hokkaido's longest zipline at Hanazono (1,700 m, up to 110 km/h), hiking, and horse trekking; available June–September.

From ski lodges in Niseko to city hotels in Sapporo, Hokkaido has accommodation for every season and style. Browse hotels across Hokkaido and secure your base before peak season availability tightens.

5. Noboribetsu — The Onsen Paradise

When to Visit and What to Expect

Noboribetsu can be visited in any season, with each offering a distinct atmosphere. Winter is the most dramatic: steam rising from Hell Valley against snow-covered hillsides creates one of Japan's most striking thermal landscapes. Autumn (September–October) turns the surrounding forests scarlet and gold, framing the volcanic valley below in vivid colour.

Summer (July–August) runs at a comfortable 20–25°C and is the busiest tourist period. Noboribetsu is approximately 1 hour 15 minutes from Sapporo by limited express train, making it the most accessible major onsen destination from Sapporo.

Key Destinations in Noboribetsu

Hell Valley (Jigokudani) — volcanic crater valley approximately 450 m in diameter and 11 hectares in size; source of Noboribetsu's hot spring water; short 20-minute loop trail past steaming fumaroles, sulfurous streams, and rust-red volcanic rock; illuminated at night.
Nine types of hot spring water — Noboribetsu is one of Japan's few resorts offering this many chemically distinct spring types (sulfur, saline, radium, iron, and others); multi-night stays allow guests to experience a different bath type each evening.
Noboribetsu Bear Park — hilltop wildlife park reachable by ropeway above the onsen town; home to over 100 Hokkaido brown bears; best combined with a Hell Valley visit in a single day.

6. Furano and Biei — The Flower Fields

When to Visit and What to Expect

July is the high season for Furano and Biei, when lavender covers the hillside farms in purple and the full summer flower palette — poppies, lupins, sunflowers, and cosmos — blooms simultaneously. Farm Tomita, the most famous lavender farm in Hokkaido, reaches peak colour between approximately July 10 and July 25.

Spring (May–June) brings softer rape blossom yellow and fresh green fields; autumn (September–October) turns the patchwork hills warm gold. The Biei Blue Pond is worth visiting year-round — it is illuminated nightly from early November through late April, when the frozen surface surrounded by snow creates a winter scene completely unlike the turquoise summer version. Both Furano and Biei are approximately 2 hours from Sapporo by train.

Key Destinations in Furano and Biei

Farm Tomita (Nakafurano) — Hokkaido's most famous flower farm; free entry; over 80 flower varieties across 12 gardens; lavender peaks July 10–25; the irodori no hatake (colourful field) displays seven varieties in rainbow stripes with the Tokachi mountains as backdrop.
Biei Blue Pond (Aoiike) — extraordinary turquoise colour produced by aluminium hydroxide particles from the Shirogane hot spring area upstream; formed after the 1988 eruption of Mount Tokachi; open year-round; nightly illumination November–April.
Patchwork Road (northwest of Biei town) — rolling crop fields of wheat, potato, lavender, and sunflower arranged in quilt-like patterns; best explored by rental car or bicycle; includes the Ken and Mary Tree (lone poplar, famous from a 1972 Nissan TV commercial).

Book your activities well in advance — Furano day trips, Blue Pond tours, and Farm Tomita experiences fill up weeks ahead during the July peak.

4-Day Hokkaido Summer Itinerary (July–August)

Lavender peaks in early-to-mid July and the summer activity calendar runs through August. If you are reading this in late summer, now is the ideal time to start planning for next year — flights and accommodation for Hokkaido's July peak fill up months in advance, so booking early gives you the best choice of dates and properties.

Day 1 — Arrive in Sapporo

Fly into New Chitose Airport and take the Airport Express train to central Sapporo (40 minutes). Spend the afternoon at the Sapporo Beer Museum and stroll through Odori Park to orientate yourself in the city.

In summer, the outdoor beer garden on Odori's central strip is ideal for a first evening meal — cold Sapporo draft beer and Hokkaido lamb (jingisukan) barbecue served alfresco. Explore Susukino after dark for fresh Hokkaido seafood at one of its many street-level restaurants.

Day 2 — Otaru

Take the 30-minute JR Rapid from Sapporo to Otaru for a morning of the canal, glasswork shops along Sakaimachi Street, and a sushi lunch near the fishing harbour. The canal is most photogenic in the late morning light, and the stone warehouse interiors are pleasantly cool on hot summer days.

Return to Sapporo in the late afternoon, leaving the evening free for a second neighbourhood or preparation for an early start the next day. In winter, stay after dark for the Snow Light Path Festival (7–14 February) before returning to Sapporo on the last train.

Day 3 — Furano and Biei

Take the seasonal Furano Lavender Express from Sapporo (approximately 2 hours, runs June–September) to Furano. Make Farm Tomita your first stop for the full lavender field experience at its July peak — the colourful field is at its best before midday.

Hire a bicycle or rental car from Biei Station to explore the Patchwork Road. The Ken and Mary Tree and Seven Stars Tree are best found and enjoyed without rushing, and the panoramic views of the Tokachi range reward the extra time. Stop at the Blue Pond for sunset, when the blue deepens under low-angle light through the silver birch trees. Overnight in Furano or Biei.

Day 4 — Hakodate

Travel from Furano back to Sapporo (approximately 2 hours) and board the Super Hokuto limited express to Hakodate (approximately 3 hours 30 minutes), arriving for a late lunch at the Morning Market stalls.

Visit Goryokaku Fort in the afternoon, then spend the final evening at the Mount Hakodate ropeway for the night view (operating until 21:50 in summer). Take a late train or overnight bus back toward New Chitose for your departure flight.
