Hotel Colonial

No idea how this place even has an 8 score on here. In costa rica for a week with 4 different hotels throughout the country and this one by far the bad one. Lobby was cute but room was filthy. Old furniture that is scratched and beat up from the tables to the shelves. Super thin pillows and toilet paper. Walls had huge stains all over them. Nothing like the photos. Also the room doesnt seem to have AC, i turned it down to 20 and it never got cool, woke up in the middle of the night sweaty. I stood on the bed to feel the smallest trickle of air come out of a single vent. We went to take a shower and no hot water. Called front desk and they said they would check on the boiler, then a callback 5 minutes later they tell us its broken and there wont be any hot water. The breakfast was above my expectstions and thats because the night before was so bad i expected it to be on par eith the room. Would not recommend this place, and I've stayed all over latin america in all different kinds of hotels and hostels. This one not worth it in my opinion.

Places is beautiful and in a great location to be down town. Area around the hotel isn’t safe after dark but hotel does a great job to keep inside safe.

It was a good location, easy to walk to some of the major sites of the city.

Great staff and restaurant was amazing. Very cute property. Only problem was no hot water. We stayed twice with 2 days in between and it did not get fixed.

Comfortable and in an excellent location to explore San Jose. Friendly, efficient, comfortable bed and a good breakfast

The bed and the shower were very good. The breakfast was varied and the staff helpful. The pool was disappointing, it really is only for kids to play in. The location is good and the price is right!

After some emergency surgery in hospial, as the result of a twisting hernia, I knew which Hotel in San Jose I wanted to come back to for spme R&R, having already stayed at the Clonial already this week!

Nice staff. Good breakfast included. In-house dining and a convenient restaurants with locally superior menus made this an easy choice for foodies who like to eat well.

Door was flimsy. Pool was advertised ridiculously with wide angle lens photo. It’s more of a plunge/dip to cool off in than a pool to swim. Tv was impossible to figure out or turn on.

Nice colonial property, but staff were not very helpful or welcoming

The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The rooms do not have air conditioning but very comfortable.

The check in person was a bit inexperienced but courtous. The place is clean but all the furniture in the common areas are very dirty. And please put a reading chair in the room. Our bathroom was new and beautiful. The breakfast was delicious.

The positives: the breakfast was DELICIOUS! Friendly staff and clean environment. The rooms we were in did not have AC, although that was advertised. Be aware, it is an old hotel so only stairs (consider for luggage carrying purposes). Our first room would not lock due to a key being broken off into the lock but they were quick and accommodating and got us in another room.

La ubicación muy buena, pero no hay parqueo en el hotel, está detrás de este, llegamos de noche y estaba lloviendo, tuvimos que caminar bajo la lluvia una cuadra, eso fue muy incómodo, solo por eso no volveríamos, menos con niños. La habitación no tenía aire acondicionado, a pesar de que en la reserva ofrecian aire y ventilador de techo, solo estaba este último, si estaba limpia y los paños huelen muy rico. El desayuno incluido estaba bien. El servicio del personal muy bien.

The hotel service was not good. The pictures that are shown on the site do not reflect the actual property. Also, the hotel is a 3 start but everything provided in the room is more like a 2 star. We had a flooding from the shower and the price for 1 night is expensive considering they do not provide you with anything (besides towels and hand soap). The hotel needs to upgrade their rooms and service for the prices they charge per night/room.

The hotel reminds me something you would find in Morocco as it had that kind of architect. The hotel was in a convenient area that was walk-able to the most visited areas. Pool was in a weird spot where if people were dining, you would be looked at and we didn´t see anyone use it. Their hot tub in it was broken. I would suggest they should just renovate it and just make it into a sitting area with plants and flowers. Rooms were clean but there are no elevators so it would be difficult for those that have issues with stairs. They do have a very small quaint restaurant by the pool but we went out for dinner during our two night stay. Staff were very friendly. Thank you for the hospitality.

Pool and pictures are outdated

We were charged over $80 USD for breakfast. Later I checked my email receipt from the original reservation and it said breakfast was included. The hotel website also says breakfast is included. I’m very disappointed. All noises from the hallway and seating area carried into our room on the first floor. My kids were exhausted but couldn’t sleep because of other guests making noise in common areas at 9:30 pm. The guests in the common area finally left at 10 pm but we could hear dishes being washed in the kitchen and the pool being cleaned until after 11 pm. The hotel was not dull, so I wish we had been given a room further from the noisy front desk/ restaurant. Speaking of the pool, when we arrived The hotel pool was not usable - water was dirty. There is no A.C. Fine, but the ceiling fan was useless and the only window that opened up was in the bathroom. We had to close the bathroom door because of the noise but it became too hot in the room. Finally, our bathroom and bedroom flooded when I showered! Water flowed from the shower in the opposite direction of the drain, pouring onto the floor and insert the door halfway to the bed. And when my husband went to ask for more towels to replace the ones we had used to clean the mess, it became clear this is something that is a regular occurrence. If I had paid $100 USD for this I wouldn’t be too upset. But with the breakfast up charge, it’s almost $200 USD. Not worth it!!!
