Malindo Air (OD/MXD) is a hybrid airline that combines premium full-service and Low-Cost Carrier (LCC).

Malindo Air is a joint cooperation between Malaysia National Aerospace and Defence Industries (NADI) and Lion Air Indonesia. The airline name itself is derived from Malaysia and Indonesia.

Chandran Rama Muthy, priorly worked as Assistant to President Director of Lion Air Indonesia, is currently the CEO of Malindo Air.

Malindo Air started its operation on 1 May 2013, taking control of all the fleets from Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Malaysia (KUL) and Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (SZB). Malindo Air serves routes covering countries in Asia such as Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal, Singapura and Thailand.

Boeing 737-900ER with the capacity of 215 passengers and propeller ATR72-600 with maximum capacity of 74 passengers are the airline’s duo offering both Business and Economy Class.

Leather seats and extra legroom, 11 inch tablet device, WiFi and electrical socket are conveniently provided for Business Class passengers.

Baggage capacity may vary for each class and destination. For international, Economy Class offers free baggage allowance up to 20 kg, while Business Class up to 40 kg. This applies to all destinations except Hang Nadim Airport (BTH), Kualanamu International Airport (KNO) and Sultan Syarif Kasim II Airport (PKU) with free baggage allowance up to 20 kg.

History of Malindo Air

On 11 September 2012, Malaysia Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced the partnership of National Aerospace and Defence Industries (NADI) and Lion Air Indonesia in the form of Malindo Air.

On 1 May 2013, Malindo Air officially began its operation, headquartered at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL). The airline initially operated 12 Boeing 737-900ERs.

The airline commenced its first commercial flight on 22 March 2013 from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia.

By January 2015, Malindo Air is supported by 19 aircrafts: 11 ATR 72-600s, 6 Boeing 737-900ERs and 2 Boeing 737-800s. Malindo Air has ordered 18 Boeing 737-900ERs and 4 ATR 72-600s to strengthen its fleet.

Infant Policies of Malindo Air

  • Infant is classified as below 2 years old.
  • Infant below 2 years old (24 months old) is not allowed to board Business Class.
  • Baby stroller, manual wheelchair, disability aids or mobility aids are allowed to be transferred as checked baggage. No extra baggage for infant.
  • Baby stroller is not allowed in cabin.
  • Infant should be seated on adult's lap. Max. one infant for one adult.
  • Infant between 9 days - 2 years old (24 months old) on the day of departure is charged with special fare.
  • Infant below 8 days old should be accompanied with a medical reference and Special Handling Form.

Children Policies of Malindo Air

  • Children are classified as between 2-12 yeard old.
  • Children below 12 years old must be accompanied by an adult passenger of minimum 18 years old.

Pregnant Passengers Policies of Malindo Air

  • Pregnant passenger with pregnancy less than 27 weeks should report her condition during check-in and sign a Special Handling Form.
  • Pregnant passenger with pregnancy between 28-34 weeks should provide a medical reference from Ob-gyn and sign a Special Handling Form.
  • Pregnant passenger with pregnancy older than 35 weeks are not allowed to board the plane.
