The Savoy Hotel in downtown Oslo in Norway.
Is part of the “Clarion Collection”.
A quirky boutique style hotel accessed from a unimposing wooden door from the street.
Entering into a very small reception area with an elevator hardly large enough to accommodate 2 guests and a large suitcase.
The reception staff were friendly, polite and accommodating and willing to engage in conversation.
Our room on the second floor was long and very narrow with a double bed that took up almost the width of the room.
Leaving only enough room to walk sideways to get into the bed.
The smart TV on the wall had a sideways view from laying on the bed but, the room did have an un-stocked mini fridge which was practical.
There was a convenience store nearby to buy things.
Our room had a small bathtub with a shower hose. The water pressure was good and water hot.
On a scale of 1-10 this accommodation was a 5 (certainly not deluxe in any sense of the word)
The room rate did include a buffet breakfast which was more than adequate to start your day with.
Afternoon cake, coffee and tea called Fisk was also provided but frankly, hardly worth returning to the hotel to eat.
Also, our room rate included a set evening meal which consisted of a soup of the day, fresh bread and butter, three types of salad buffet style and a meat dish of the day such as meat stew.
Tasty and plentiful if you like eating the kind of food you would get served in a work canteen such as a factory worker.
A simple burger on its own at a nearby burger restaurant will set you back around US$15 for example so although it seems attractive for the rate to include an evening meal, do not be deceived as its of low quality.
One thing that annoyed me was on visiting the restaurant for the evening meal on our second nights stay.
We entered the restaurant at 4 minutes to 18.00
Many guests were already seated at tables waiting for the buffet to open.
I observed that all the food was already set out and at 2 minutes to 18.00 got up to eat.
The long haired catering assistant with his hair tied up, looked at his watch and said “its not 6 o’clock yet so wait another 4 minutes”
I retorted “oh, I am so sorry but actually it is 2 minutes to six. I sat back in my seat and at the same time another Norwegian man did the same as I just did but, the catering assistant said nothing to him.
Thus, I complained to another member of the restaurant staff and she apologized and said she did not think her colleague was discriminating against me.
I did not go back for a meal on the third night as I felt very unwelcome.
Norway is an expensive country for sure and especially for most foreign visitors.
Many visitors to Norway do so by all inclusive cruise ships and return to the ship to eat or carry a lunch box to eat.
All said, the Hotel was of an acceptable standard and quite inexpensive for what it provided us.
I would recommend the hotel for a couple of nights stay (but not longer) as certainly it is very conveniently located downtown.
This said, on reflection I think you could do much better booking another hotel in the same area of Oslo as, there are many to choose from.
I hope this review helps you!
