Loved this hotel, the staff were very friendly and helpful, our room was huge and had a lovely hot shower. Very dog friendly. Parking is around the back off Franklin Street and once you know where it is, it's easy to get to. We ate here for breakfast as well as in the evening. The food was good and service was excellent. All in all, we had a great time.

Omg!! I so much wish that we’d had more time to spend in this gem. The room was lovely. The building is gorgeous. Breakfast was lovely. The hospitality was so warm and welcoming. The one caution I will leave is the parking. The parking area is roomy enough, but it is kinda hard to find. Call the reception desk ahead of time and have them text a picture of the map to the parking area. If I’m ever lucky enough to stay in Stromness again, I will absolutely be staying here again. Hopefully for more than one night next time.

Sep 2026 The Stromness Hotel Aug 29, 2026 - Sep 6, 2026 You rated * I booked several months ago for a week, 29/8 to 6/9. The hotel has changed hands, and there are some shocking reviews. On arrival, there is an empty reception desk on the ground floor. A small sign indicates that reception is on the first floor. Why? I am 77 years old, but I was given room 38 on the third floor. There is no lift! So three flights of steps, good exercise. The member of staff on duty carried my case up for me. The bathroom had a shower over the bathtub, no towel rails (towels on the bed), and nothing to hold onto when getting in and out. I complained to a member of staff but nothing was done. Before I left, I was informed by the other staff member that there was a room with a walk in shower cabinet, on a lower floor! My room had no opening window and suffered from condensation. The hotel is understaffed. The two friendly women did reception, breakfast etc, always on their own. There were very few guests while I was there. The hotel has a terrible reputation locally. The large breakfast room becomes a restaurant in the evening, no alcohol, and a suspiciously full menu, only a couple of diners. Therefore I went most evenings to the Ferry Inn opposite, great food. On the last morning I fell in the bathroom. The shower rail collapsed and injured the back of my head, blood everywhere. No broken bones. I was advised by 111 to attend the hospital in Kirkwall, where I was thoroughly checked out by doctor and consultant, and permitted to return home as planned.

What a fantastic find! The atmosphere of the place is just amazing. Yes, it needs a little updating but don't need Wetherspooning and dim grey decor. Excellent service and a very good ribeye steak. Could have done with slightly more veggies (little bit of salad?) and slightly crispier chips given that they market it as three times fried but the feel and location - man!

The hotel is located in a visibly aged, but perfectly authentic historical building. All facilities were clean and staff was extremely friendly. One star goes down for some legacy engineering (old separate taps, power sockets layout).
