This hotel was truly spectacular. What struck me most was how well the design showcases Matera's distinctive architecture without sacrificing comfort or luxury. The rooms are genuinely comfortable and beautiful inside — modern, while still respecting the character of the city's stonework, and never losing that cozy feel. Our room in particular opened directly onto the street, almost like a little house of its own. It was one of our favorite stays ever. There's one important thing to flag. The hotel's listing advertises free on-site parking, which was actually one of the reasons we chose it. A few days before arrival, we got an email letting us know that the hotel is in a restricted vehicle access zone, and that parking is actually a 10 minute walk away. When I wrote back pointing out that this wasn't what was advertised, I was just told that the hotel is in a restricted zone as mosts hotels in Matera, which I of course completly understand, but doesn't change the fact that the listing isn't accurate. So: factor this into your budget — the shuttle to the parking lot costs €15 per trip. And if you're thinking of just walking instead, it's just 10 minutes but it's uphill with a lot of steps, so it's very hard with luggage — fine if you only have a backpack or hand luggage. None of this would stop me from booking again or recommending it — the hotel itself is excellent and one of my favorite stays of the trip. Just go in with the right expectations about parking.

We stayed two nights at Pianelle Resort. The location was ideal for exploring the old town and taking advantage of the many nearby restaurants. The bedroom and bathroom were both spacious. They were a combination of modern / high spec and historical building. The only slight irritation / surprise was, although we didn’t need any, there would have been a charge for extra towels. This is unnecessary and sends the wrong message. However, this would not stop us from highly recommending it.

Possibly one of the most beautiful places we have stayed, in a truly unique and special city. Our cave room was large and spectacular. Couldn’t have asked for better amenities. Breakfast was nice. Perfectly located property and nice rooftop area.

L’hôtel est magnifiquement situé. Prendre note que si vous arrivez en voiture, vous devrez la stationner à environ 20 minutes de marche. L’hôtel est très propre. Cependant, la salle de bain est derrière un mur de vitre, donc douche et toilette complément ouvertes sur la chambre. Ce qui était très malaisant puisque je voyageais avec ma fille.

The hotel was in an amazing location and was well appointed, beautiful blend of modern and old. Staff were super helpful with great restaurant recommendations and general advice.

This hotel is beautiful, clean and very calming. The staff was amazing, breakfast was fantastic and the rooftop was stunning. The location is walkable to everything. Matera is a beautiful and unique historic town that was really fun to explore. All of the restaurants we tried were delicious too. I highly recommend Matera and the Pianelle resort!

Amazing stay!!! Didn’t want to leave.

I cannot say enough about how perfect our stay was at Pianelle! Starting off with Saverio, the manager who was so helpful and kind, ensuring us that all of our needs were met. Then there is the super kind staff that also went out of their way to be friendly and efficient. Our cave room was beyond beautiful, tastefully decorated, one of the best showers we've had on this 2 week trip - everything was perfect!!

Exceptional service and charming room. Great location. Breakfast was okay (nothing special, but not awful). We would gladly return. Matera exceeded our expectations. We recommend d the burrata at Casal, and convivial and lopa. The cinema room at lopa is a fun and memorable experience!

Spacious unique rooms with very modern bathrooms. Staff was very willing to assist with all queries. Location in Matera was ideal.

Outstanding - eggs, breads, fruit all amazing!

Room was very nice with great bathroom. Great location right in the heart of the Sassi area.The only down side was that we were overcharged for food with little acknowledgement from the stuff, which we did not appreciate.

Location, staff and uniqueness

As everyone has said previously on this site, the staff really make this hotel. They are very helpful and friendly; nothing is too much bother for them. They helped to find us when we got lost in the town on arrival, they arranged a taxi to come and get us off the hill opposite (thankfully there is a car park at the top as there was no way I was making it back on foot!). Just lovely people. The room was also fab. It had everything. The bathroom mirror was heated, which was welcome in the October cold and rain. Breakfast was perfectly adequate. Location was great too. Highly recommend.
