Firstly, the only reason I haven't given this hotel a terrible score is because of the staff. They were friendly, welcoming and did their best to help. Unfortunately, The Devonshire Arms was a real disappointment considering the £180 we paid for one night. I genuinely wouldn't recommend paying more than £100 per night. The photos on the website make the hotel look much better than it actually is, and I wish we'd travelled a little further and booked elsewhere. The room was clean, but everything felt very basic. The biggest issue was the lack of air conditioning. Although AC wasn’t stated on the website, you would expect at least a decent fan system. Not only was there no AC in the bedrooms, but also none in the restaurant or pub. The room became unbearably hot, resulting in one of the worst nights' sleep I've ever had. The fan provided was completely inadequate, and the cable was so short it couldn’t even reach the table to position it properly. It was obvious we weren't the only guests struggling with the heat. Breakfast was also disappointing. Mine was inedible, and although the staff kindly offered to replace it, I'd completely lost my appetite. My husband's breakfast wasn't much better. The problem isn't the staff—it's that the owners appear unwilling to reinvest in the property while continuing to charge premium prices. For what we paid, I expected a much higher standard of comfort and facilities. Sadly, this hotel did not deliver value for money.

A lovely location, bedroom was clean and cosy and the staff were friendly and helpful. Thoughtful touches included wellies and umbrellas to borrow if the weather should be bad (which it wasn’t). Would recommend especially if planning to visit Chatsworth House which just a short drive away.

Unfortunately no staff on reception at any time so no help when you need it. Had to find my own key to the room when arriving late as no porter around. Food very good though and room clean

The rooms were small and the ones on the ground floor were noisy because of the proximity to the bar/restaurant. The food (breakfast and dinner) was fantastic though!

Lovely clean room, and comfortable bed. The bar area was nice with a lot of choice. We ate at the restaurant- food was lovely but the service was poor. After we had our starter, it took over an hour for our mains to arrive. Nobody came to check on us or apologise for the delay. I had to grab a passing barman to ask for more drinks and after being there an hour and a quarter, chase up our mains. Such a shame because the food was very tasty but I wouldn’t eat there again

The staff were very friendly and helpful and breakfast was good. We stayed in the family room and it was absolutely fine for what we needed but a bit rough around the edges - the bunk beds were good for the kids and there were two bathrooms which was a bonus. Some books and games in there which was a nice touch. Had a kettle and drink station and a tv in each room (although we didn’t seem to be able to use both at the same time for some reason). The downside was that the room was above the kitchen and extremely noisy in the evening before 9:30pm, as would be expected with people working there (the music got pretty unbearable at times unfortunately) so be aware if you have young kids with an earlier bedtime. Floorboards also pretty noisy, so if you have sensitive sleepers, maybe not ideal. Otherwise, it did the job and past 9:30pm it was fairly quiet and comfortable.

Lovely friendly staff, nice room with quaality toiletries, freah milk available for the room. Fruit available for breakfast would be welcome.

Shower don’t work. Even bath taps as well. Complained. In morning just got a sorry - couldn’t wash ! Could only use sink. Appalling service for a hotel they sets a high standard. Staff manager in morning was rude - only polite staff were in breakfast or on bar. Manager needs a lesson in communication skill. No compensation offered. Awaiting refund

The bar was closing early but I wasn’t informed if this until a few days after I’d made the Booking.

Very welcoming Very dog friendly - some nice little touches nice public area decor and warm pub feel - but very small room and very average evening meal and poor breakfast - burned over done fried eggs un toasted or buttered muffins with rubbery scrambled eggs that had caught - and very expensive for the quality - obvious Chatsworth proximity price hike.

Nice room and good breakfast. There needs to be a separate area for dogs at breakfast as we had dogs next to us on both sides during breakfast.

Very pricey for a small double room and pathetic showers.

Stopover journey , room was very comfortable and warm, very clean. Food in the bar was excellent value for money. Nice touch was the bathroom toiletries and walking guides provided. Receptionist and bar staff very friendly and knowledgeable.
