The largest crater lake in the world, Lake Toba was formed by a supervolcanic eruption that nearly drove humanity to extinction 77,000 years ago. Today, visitors flock to the lake to swim, canoe, fish, or simply enjoy its cool breeze and mountainside views. A ferry from nearby Parapat takes visitors to Samosir Island in the middle of the lake, home to ancient Batak villages and royal tombs dating centuries.
