1. Mass Transit Railway (MTR)

The main transportation of Hong Kong that becomes the favorite among locals as well as tourists altogether. It is a fast and clean and convenient way to travel around Hong Kong Island. The MTR itself operates 11 lines with over 90 stations making it a convenient way to go around the major destinations in the city.

There are several way to purchase tickets for MTR :

1. Octopus Card: A rechargeable contactless card that can be purchased at any MTR station. In order to top it up you can either do it either on the station, or any convenience store around. It is one of the most convenient ways to pay for the MTR fees.

2. Single Journey Tickets : Different from Octopus Card, As the name says it is a one use only ticket which can be purchased from machines at MTR stations and are only valid for one specific destination to another specific destination that you’ve chosen during your purchase on the tickets machine.

2. Hong Kong Tramways

A charming historical public transportation, Hong Kong Tramways which also got a nickname “ding-dings” for the sound they make is an iconic double-decker trams that have been operating since around 100 years ago. The tram system operates between six routes, spanning from Shau Kei Wan to Kennedy Town, with numerous tram stops which is one leisure way to explore different districts and immerse yourself in the local atmosphere. The fares are not expensive either, which is one of the budget-friendly options for getting around.

Besides acting as one of the public transportation in Hong Kong, it also acts as one popular tourist attraction and it is a great way to experience the city’s culture and history where you can see various historical buildings and the bustling city of Hong Kong. The ride itself even holds the Guinness World Records title as the world’s largest double-decker tram that is still active with over 165 tramcars.

As for the payment, there are two methods of payment that you can use for this transportation. It is either using the Octopus Card or using cash.

3. Peak Tram

A must-try historical ride which is even older than the Hong Kong Tramways, Peak Tram is a cable car that will brings you to the most famous spots in Hong Kong, Victoria Peak that is known as the highest point in Hong Kong city that offers you the breathtaking city skylines, as well as the iconic Victoria Harbour while being surrounded by the lush greenery. During your way up, you will also be able to enjoy the views of the city from an unusual angle and have a relaxing and leisure trip. The tram operates from 7.30AM to 11 PM from Monday to Sunday and Public Holidays, and departs every 15 to 20 minutes. And so if you missed one, don’t worry and take the next tram.

4. Buses

Another essential transportation for Hong Kong’s public transportation system. Buses are quite budget-friendly which is perfect for those of you who are budget-minded to travel around the city with a network that covers almost every corner of Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and other territories. There are a various types of bus that you can found in Hong Kong ;

Franchised Bus: The most common type of bus that is operated by private companies. They are double decker buses that follow specific routes and have designated stops. The fares would be different between one's destination to the other and the payment done upon boarding. This kind of bus allows payment either using cash or Octopus cards.
Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB) : One of the largest franchised double deckers that operates for over 400 different routes serving Kowloon and the New Territories.
Citybus: Another major franchised bus that primarily operates around Hong Kong Island and Kowloon.
New World First Bus (NWFB): Another franchised bus company that serves various destinations around Hong Kong Island. It has four terminals at Heng Fa Chuen, Wong Chuk Hang, Tseung Kwan O and West Kowloon.
Long Win Bus COmpany Limited: A company bus that mainly operates around Hong Kong International Airport, North Lantau New Town and the New Territories. It operates for around 264 licensed buses, including double-decker air-conditioned low-floor buses.
New Lantau Bus (NLB): Another franchised bus that mainly operates around Lantau Island.
Public Light Buses (PLBs): A red minibus that follows specific routes but are not exactly bound by fixed schedules or stops. They are a more flexible option than franchised buses but it might get more crowded and challenging to navigate for first-time visitors. Fares are usually much cheaper than the franchised bus, and the payment would be using cash and paid directly to the driver.

5. Ferries

Using ferries that operate around Hong Kong will take you on a trip across Victoria Harbour from one island to another island that is full with popular tourist attractions as well as natural beauty.
