Skyscrapers surrounded by lush green valleys with vast oceans appearing as its frontyard is definitely a part of Hong Kong’s charming scene.

Hong Kong is China’s Special Administrative Region besides Macau. Thus, Hong Kong has its own government, police department, currency and education system separated from China’s. Passport is needed to enter Hong Kong’s territory from China.

Besides economy sector, Hong Kong also popular with its worldwide art and culture. Several famous martial film actors such as Bruce Lee, Chow Yun-fat, Jackie Chan and Jet Li started their career in Hong Kong film industry. Shaolin Soccer and Rumble in The Bronx are the movies originally from Hong Kong that get International recognition.

Hong Kong’s history relates to United Kingdom. In 1842, United Kingdom occupied Hong Kong’s territories after defeated Qin Dynasty in First Opium War. Under United Kingdom’s occupation, Hong Kong’s territories was the center of the international trade.

In 1850s, Chinese immigrants moved to Hong Kong escaping the Taiping Rebellion. The migration affected Hong Kong’s economic sector by fulfilling its human capital needs.

In 1898, after being defeated in Second Opium War, China gave a 99-year lease of New Territories to United Kingdom.

After the lease was over, Hong Kong became China's Special Administrative Region on 1 July 1997. With its special administration called “one country, two systems”, Hong Kong gained 50 years to run its own government.

Although it isn’t a country, Hong Kong has international phone code, an immigration office and currency. Hong Kong is also registered in international organizations such as WTO (World Trade Organization), APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) and IOC (International Olympic Committee).

Hong Kong’s national language is Chinese and English. The local residents mostly speak Cantonese, a dialect adapted from Guangzhou, China.

How to get there

There are several ways to go to Hong Kong:

By Plane

Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) is the only airport in Hong Kong providing international flights. It has two terminals: Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Garuda Indonesia airline departs from Terminal 1.

By Ferry

Ocean Terminal at Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon is the main harbour in Hong Kong serving international and domestic routes. Ocean Terminal is also famous as a shopping centre with 450 stores and 50 restaurants, cinema and hotel.

From Macau, you can take a ferry boat to Hong Kong-Macau Ferry Terminal in northern Hong Kong Island. The trip takes around one hour.

By Train/Bus

You can go to Hong Kong from Shenzhen, China by train or bus.

There are several tourist attractions in Hong Kong:

Avenue of Star

America has Holywood Walk of Fame, so does Hong Kong with Avenue of Star. This seaside attraction boasts a spectacular view. Other than celebrities handprints, a life-sized statue of the legend Bruce Lee can be found in Avenue of Star.

Avenue of Star is a perfect place to see A Symphony of Lights, a colorful light performance from Hong Kong’s skyscraper.

The Peak

This is the highest place in Hong Kong Island and also one of the tourist favorite attractions. You can see Hong Kong’s skyscraper with Victoria Harbour in the background from a platform called The Sky Terrace 428.

The Peak has lots of shopping areas and restaurants. Traditional culinary and fast-food restaurant are available at The Peak. WiFi connection is also available for free.

The most interesting thing from The Sky Terrace 428 is a 360 degree panoramic view of Hong Kong. Also, you can bring your family to enjoy an outdoor park around The Sky Terrace 428.

Disneyland Hong Kong

At Disneyland Hong Kong, you can see spectacular shows from your favorite Disney characters.

Disneyland Hong Kong has 35 attractions suitable for all family members. Toy Story Land is one of area in Disneyland Hong Kong that has four popular attractions: Barrel of Fun, RC Racer, Slinky Dog Spin and Toy Soldier Parachute Drop.

Lan Kwai Fong
