What Guests Say About Their Stay

The Tabard Inn (over a hundred years old) is the definitive "shabby chic." Though scruffy-looking (but interesting wherever one's eyes rest) it's an acquired taste that some will lap up and others will wonder where a TV is. I loved its true-to-itself. Now many may not love the steep, narrow staircase that was needed to go up to my room, just barely wide enough for my piece of luggage. Indeed the various stairways and step-downs and step-ups conjured up images of Escher drawings. Yet, it has a huge following with the "hot local crowd in the know" for its evening drinks scene. Checking in, I was surprised when given two $10 chits to be used towards breakfast (or lunch.) I used both of mine and the cooking is Excellent, and plentiful. No one will feel underfed.

Tabard Inn is in a great location! I'm glad we had a chance to stay there. I recommend it and would stay there again. The outside dining area is very quaint and relaxing. Bed was comfortable. My two comments are around the bathroom/shower: 1) it literally took 5 mins (we timed it) for the water in the shower to become warm/hot. We were on a top floor so maybe that had something to do with it? 2) the shower itself is not enclosed so water ends up all over the floor. We didn't want to slip on the floor post shower so we sopped up the water with towels.

The staff was all really sweet and they all tried their best to accommodate us, however the issue was when we were placed in our first room the toilet wasn't working and the decorations were a little old fashioned and honestly slightly creepy. When they moved us to our second room we had an issue with the door. There was a hole in the wall near the air conditioning and there was no warm water when you turned on the shower. The room was connected to the neighboring room and that felt a little bit sketchy. At first we didn't know that the rooms were connected but we found out the hard way when in the morning our front door wasn't opening and we tried to see if there is another way out and we accidentally walked into the next person's room. We found a way out in the end but it was quite an awkward experience. The decor in the lobby was a little strange and we felt especially startled by this random massive doll they had in the hallways. Overall the experience wasn't horrible and for the amount of money we paid for one night it wasn't too bad but i felt like some slight adjustments could've made our stay a little more pleasant.

I would hands down recommend the Tabard Inn to anyone traveling to DC. It has history, charm, a friendly and accommodating staff, and a great dining experience. We had breakfast at the restaurant during our stay, and the service was great, with a fun outdoor/patio area and delicious food. I wish we could have stayed longer!

Tabard Inn is a charming, historic inn with approximately 32 rooms. The rooms are individually furnished and very whimsical and eclectic. I loved the decor of my room, room 5. Sadly, it looked out over the inn's HVAC system and a small parking lot so I kept my curtains drawn for my one night stay. The restaurant is very popular in the Dupont Circle neighborhood and serves excellent new American cuisine. I live in DC and have visited the restaurant a few times over the decades. Was always intrigued by the inn and said I would stay there one day. I plan to return to the hotel--will simply request a room with a view. Highly recommend for those who appreciate intimate and quirky.
