When we checked in the receptionist did not speak english and when I asked her to speak slowly so that I could understand her (my spanish is ok, but not good) she continued speaking at a very fast pace. I think we were told that we couldn't check in because we were too early (it was 3:10) and checkin wasn't until 3pm. She took us to the restaurant where we grabbed a snack and then returned to the office. At that point we were checked in and shown our room. At no point were we oriented to the property, this mystified us over the next 3 days as we wandered around trying to figure out where things were. It took us until day 3 to find the gym that was located in the Spa.
I fully get that not speaking great Spanish in Mexico is on me. That being said, I have traveled in Mexico a lot and never had such an experience where someone seemed truly disinclined to work with me to understand.
A few other notes:
1. Private beach was incredible. Shaded palapas, beach bar, just big enough to go for a walk, really nice.
2. We didn't learn this until we were leaving, but the normal restaurant was close due to lightning damage, the substitute restaurant was the yoga room. We didn't know this and thought we were just in the restaurant and it was really weird. We learned this from other guests.
3. The bathroom in our room needs some love. Corroded shower head, bath spigot coming off the wall, etc...
4. The staff (aside from reception) were absolutely lovely.
