The biggest downfall was the cleanliness and the overall impression was tatty. In the room there was dust everywhere. The shelf on the bedside cabinet was thick with dust. Dust on the TV edges. The edges along the mirror stand were thick with dust. The net curtains were dirty and ripped. There was no toilet brush, no plastic beakers in the bathroom and the toilet bowl was stained. On the second day all the breakfast food was cold, we dined at 9AM. Two juice jugs were empty, there weren't any bottles of water and hardly any glasses. There was no beer in the bar, just lager. Guinness wasn't on draft, even though there was a hand pull, it was served in tins.

Great location and friendly staff, but the building needs serious updates. The hotel is in an excellent location, the breakfast was good, everything was clean, and the staff were friendly and helpful. However, the building itself is very dated and in desperate need of renovation. It feels quite run-down and worn out, which detracts from the overall experience.

It is a very old building in need of a complete renovation. We paid £160 a night which is not what you would expect from a property in these conditions. It does not have parking (you need to pay extra for street parking) and they charge additional £20 if you have a pet. Again double what others do. A bit of a rip off.

It’s possibly the most tired property I’ve ever stayed at. The pigeons on my windowsill started coo-ing at 3.30am and didn’t stop. No prospect of sleep. It’s awful.

Oldest hotel in UK, boasts tracing back to the 1530s. Quirky doorways.

Old property in need of much renovation. Poor kitchen ventilation - food smells lingered. Carpets old with odour of canines.

Really poor stay. Second-level room was more like a basement and had as near to no fresh air possible. Bathroom had stains on the walls, cobwebs in corners, and dust caked on the towel rack. Included breakfast was buffet-style and nothing to write about. Service was overall sub-par, bordering on negligent. Buxton itself is lovely but we’ll steer clear of the Old Hall next time we’re here.

+ Nice full English breakfast buffet + Free/cheap parking + Located in the city center - Wifi was broken, but could connect to their sister hotel's wifi - Downgraded to a single room on the 1st night, as 1 of the rooms wasn't useable due to rain. Was moved back to a double on the 2nd night

Had a lovely stay. Yes, some of the decor looks tired but it is a very old hotel with lots of character. I booked 3 rooms and we had the smallest bed, but it was very comfortable. We had a drink in the "Whine bar" which is small and busy in the evening and also breakfast, which was one of the nicest, self serve, breakfasts I've ever had. All the staff were attentive and friendly but the lady on reception and the lady on at breakfast, were especially lovely. Just one thing to remember, if you use the lift, please shut the metal gate and door when you get out as it cannot be called/used from another floor, if not.

This is a lovely old hotel situated in the heart of Buxton. If you come by bus it is a short walk downhill from the Market Place. My room was satisfactory for my stay - the furnishings were older style but functional. There was a good shower fitted over the bath. A chair would have been useful in the room but there was a nice lounge at the front of the hotel. The buffet breakfast was good with many hot and cold options. The staff l met at breakfast and reception were very helpful, pleasant and efficient. There are several old artefacts associated with the hotel on display. I would stay there again next time I’m in Buxton.

Card in the lobby says it’s the oldest hotel in Britain—Mary, Queen of Scots stayed there in the 16th century— with later Georgian additions. Clean and comfortable, but definitely due for a major refresh. Breakfast was buffet style in a lovely sunlight filled restaurant.
