— Tour Highlights —
Shirakawa-go is a small, traditional Japanese village recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is one of the most popular tourist spots in Japan, worth a visit at least once, especially in the winter. The thatched roofs and snow-covered farmhouses built in the Gassho-Zukuri architectural style look like something out of a fairy tale. This six-day light-up event in Shirakawa-go only runs from January to February 2022. The event is by reservation only, so we recommend you book the Light-Up Bus Tour as soon as possible.
The ruins of the historic Ogimachi Castle rest on a cliff on the northwest part of a plateau. The view overlooking the Shirakawa-go Gassho-Zukuri village below is exceptional, making it the best place to take pictures. To go to the observation deck, visitors can ride a shuttle bus or climb on the gently sloping footpath from Ogimachi Gassho Village. The view is somewhat different from that of the Tenshukaku Observatory.
At the Gassho-Zukuri Minkaen, visitors can experience the preserved culture of the Japanese people who lived in harmony with nature. There are a total of 26 Gassho-Zukuri structures in the village, nine of which have been designated as important cultural properties by the prefecture, including the water mill house, shrine, and main hall of the temple which were relocated to their original positions in the past.
