My husband and I absolutely fell in love with this hotel. It was booked last minute for the last day of our trip in London before leaving, and happed to come up when I looked at hotels near Gatwick. We took about a 30 minute car ride to reach the property and were blown away when we got there. The scenery was so beautiful, and the hotel was in a good location. A lot of motorcycles do frequent the area, but we weren’t bothered by them. We dropped off our luggage since we got in so early, took a quick walk to Raykas for a delicious breakfast sandwich and then went on a hike up Box Hill, which was absolutely gorgeous. After we got back to the hotel and into our room (with air conditioning!) and freshened up before heading to the hotel bar for a couple drinks, then another short walk around Mole River before dinner at the hotel restaurant. They had a standard menu but also offered an Indian food menu, which we ordered from and enjoyed everything. We ordered wine from the bar and took it back to our room and soaked up the beautiful weather and the rest of our evening from the patio outside our room. We truly couldn’t believe our luck in finding this lovely hotel and later found out it’s existed here in some form since the 1200s, which the history buff in me found so exciting. We are going to plan a trip back JUST to stay in this hotel!

The ‘mandatory’ online check in and codes for bedroom doors were a bit of a faff but the hotel has been significantly upgraded and the decor is very tasteful.

This place has so many things that should be great - a beautiful setting, building and amenities. Unfortunately it’s let down by poor management..
From what I can see - the pool is a separate business - run by great staff, as a lido. It’s fab.
The hotel is pretty but Fawlty Towers-like in its management. For example, my husband slashed his toe very badly on a broken glass on the lawn and the hotel staff had no idea what to do about it. The lido staff came to the rescue and did an excellent job at first aid. The hotel staff left them to it - and didn’t even ask if he was ok. There was no customer care at all. Not even a “can I offer you a glass of water, while you bleed on my lawn?!” Such poor customer care.
The food in bar was basic but expensive and I had to chase for cutlery and napkins. The waiting staff were v nice and seemed to be getting orders barked at them by management. Customer care doesn’t seem to be instilled as a management priority.
Also - if you want room service there is a £7 surcharge!
Overall, it feels like the hotel is there to make money and the customers are a bit of a nuisance. Love the lido though.

Very disappointing stay. Staff failed to mention air con wasn’t working during a heatwave until I came down from my room to ask why it was so hot and getting hotter.
Offered waffle and excuses. Very noisy all night.
Wooden floor sticky at breakfast. Looks like it used to be a nice place. Needs a good clean and some staff training.

Hotel looks like it needs refurbishment.
However the swimming pool is excellent & the rooms are clean.
The access is a 6 digit code to your room, which you have to remember which is annoying.
Also you have to pay for parking.

Egentlig hyggelig hotell og hyggelig personale, men innsjekking og håndtering av reservasjonen gjennom oyo systemet var omstendelig og fryktelig upersonlig. Når personen i resepsjonen ikke vet om det er ledige rom og man må ringe India for spørsmål om reservasjonen, så skaper det uttrygghet og gir en dårlig følelse. Når frokostpersonale går rundt med elektronisk «staff tracker» så får man følelsen av at storebror ser deg.

The reception area has clearly been refurbished, unlike the rooms and corridors which need some serious TLC. The staff are so helpful and friendly. Parking costs £10 per day which given the hotel is somewhere people drive to is basically a way of charging less for a room and making it up via the parking charge.

Abysmal experience. We booked this hotel for the sole reason that it was advertised as having air conditioning, only to find that when we arrived there was none. The property is also in a serious state of disrepair with mould in the bathroom and damp on walls and carpet. On top of this, the pool was so full that it was impossible to get in, given that the hotel allows non-guests to use it. As my partner is pregnant, and due to the extreme heat, this property was not safe to stay in and we immediately spoke to reception and Hotels.com to request a refund so that we could move to a new hotel. We were assured by the receptionist that this would be provided in the next couple of days, and after speaking to Hotels.com they confirmed they would also pursue this with the property. However, once we left we were informed that we would not receive a refund. Avoid this hotel at all costs. There are many nicer hotels in the area for the same price or less, who do not lie about the amenities they have.

Had a room change after the first night
Noise from the nearby motorcycles meant that we couldn’t sleep
The second room was much better in location and size and the air conditioning was better as it was very hot weather

Hoped to use the pool before check in time but was told it was too busy on a very hot day
This was because the pool is basically a public lido. It was absolutely packed with people and children. Couldn't get a sun lounger and no towels available.
Room very dated furniture and stained carpet.
Ordered a pizza, which looked like it had been done in the microwave.
Staff unhelpful
Definitely not 4 star hotel, more like 1 or 2.
Had to pay for parking.
Not a relaxing stay at all.

This hotel was in a beautiful location with stunning grounds (which needed a bit of maintenance). the bar, reception, restaurant & seating areas within the main hotel were beautifully updated but I stayed in a room out the back in a separate wing and my patio door was broken and could not be locked so i had about 1/2 hours sleep - worrying about someone coming into my room. This whole block needs serious renovation.
All in all though the room - even though it needed a complete update, the bed was comfortable and the linen on the bedding was lovely. Lovely meal in the restaurant & the breakfast was delicious

I feel this hotel has just changed management. For the price we were charged it was very tired, carpet stains in corridors, buckets to catch leakes. The room was spacious but needed a deep clean. We were charged £10 for the car park. We had an evening meal that was presented and cooked well. My portion was very small.
Breakfast was average.
Staff were very kind and welcoming.

Parking charges are misleading. “Additional charges for parking may be applicable” is very different from not having their own carpark & having to use the public carpark opposite the hotel with charges starting from £10 for overnight & getting ridiculous when you stay longer. Payment is taken by hotel in reception. The room I stayed in faced the road. Large clean room with the strongest water pressure I’ve come across in the UK. But the traffic noise from the road was off the scale. No double glazing, busy road, very close to the roundabout and next to a bikers pub. It was too noisy to follow a phone conversation or watch tv, never mind sleeping. The staff were lovely.

As a single woman travelling alone, I rarely feel unsafe in a hotel, but unfortunately at this hotel I did and I never leave negative reviews.
Upon arriving the reception area had a few Eastern European men ‘mooching’ about, there was nobody on reception to greet me, but knowing this is a check in remotely hotel that was fine, had it not been for the men hanging around the area.
My room although clean had a horrible smell and the balcony door was unlocked.
I had a terrible nights sleep, not just because the bed is so hard, but I woke at every noise thinking someone was entering the room.
At 4:45am there was a few knocks on my door - I don’t know if this was a room mistake, but just added to my concern.
There wasn’t any mention of having to pay for parking onsite, so was annoyed at having to pay £10 to park overnight- especially when in the morning I could see I could have parked outside the hotel for free.
I have since read that this hotel is/was housing asylum seekers, so if you’re a lone woman travelling alone; I would avoid - equally if you don’t want to sleep on a rock hard bed avoid.
