The hotel is historic so the rooms and decor are appropriately old-fashioned, but we were comfortable. We recommend the king size rooms as they were considerably more spacious (we stayed in both a queen and a king during our stay.) But what really stood out was the above and beyond customer service. The manager & team really went out of their way to accommodate our own scheduling issue and make the transition as smooth as possible - and it was incredibly smooth. Thank you for the care and attention and for making a complicated weekend very easy! As a side note, we also enjoyed some delicious fish and chips at the hotel pub.

If you’re looking for a place with character, history, comfort, and wonderful hospitality, great location, I highly recommend James Bay Inn. I would happily stay here again. Staying at James Bay Inn felt like visiting a beloved grandparent’s home in the best possible way. The moment we walked in, there was a warm, nostalgic atmosphere that is hard to describe. The beautiful antique furniture, spotless rooms, unique decorations, and the character of the building made it feel like a small local museum rather than just a hotel. Every corner had been thoughtfully designed, and I loved finding cozy little spaces to sit and relax, especially the charming balcony. In a world that often feels rushed and modern, this place offered something special—a sense of history, peace, and timeless beauty. It felt like a place built with care over many years, and you could truly feel that character throughout the hotel. A special thank you to Roy, who checked us in. He was funny, welcoming, and genuinely enjoyable to talk to. What is usually a routine check-in became one of the most memorable and cheerful parts of our stay because of his great sense of humor and warm personality.

My preferred accommodation in Victoria. It’s always friendly, clean and room well suited for my short stays. The location is perfect, only a few steps from the inner city and in a very quiet location with parking, too. The pub and restaurant are quite popular with in local neighbourhood and guests, and I find them to provide good food and service with an attractive, busy vibe.

James Bay Inn is charming. The staff is the nicest and friendliest I’ve ever encountered. The only downside for us was that we were in Victoria during a rare heat wave, and the rooms are not air conditioned. However, there was a fan in the room, and they offered to get us a second one if needed. If I were ever in Victoria again, I would definitely stay here again.

Hotel was in a lovely area and close enough to walk to downtown, staff very friendly and the bar and restaurant offered a good selection of food. Only negatives were no tea and coffee facilities in room but were available in the morning in the reception area and there are steps up to the hotel entrance. Would definitely stay here again.

Yes, the hotel is old, so lacks some of the conveniences of a modern chain hotel and the rooms are smaller; but the room was clean and very comfortable with a spacious bathroom with large shower. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The on-site pub and restaurant are excellent. The location is also excellent, very quiet, and only a short walk to the Legislative Assembly Building, the Royal BC Museum and the Empress Hotel. Other harbour-front attractions are only a few minutes further walk, or a few minutes away by Uber. We really enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay here again.

I liked everything about James Bay Inn. Old, with lots of character. Clean. No air conditioning, but windows open and there was a fan. Supper in the pub was very good.
