The Amalia is in the PERFECT location in central Athens. We ditched the idea of booking expensive, time-controlled guided tours through the cruise line or other agencies and literally walked everywhere, including to the Acropolis Museum and up to the Parthenon. All the sites we were interested in seeing are, in fact, walkable from this location. It is literally right across the street from the main entrance to the National Garden, which is gorgeous and worth an hour long stroll to see the turtle pond, statuary, hidden nuggets of beauty and quaint cafe tucked away in the back. It is literally a 5 minute walk to Constitution Square and the Parliament Building, where the solemn, hourly 'changing of the guard' is conducted with reverence and dignity and -- during the day -- draws huge crowds. If you stay here, you can get an almost private viewing with the same ceremonial weight and no crowds.
The hotel itself features a rooftop restaurant and bar with a spectacular view of the Parthenon as well as a ground floor lounge with it's own bar. A lovely breakfast with lots of options is included and the staff goes out of their way to make sure you have everything you need. We like ice in most of our cold drinks, and they cheerfully kept us stocked. When we set out on our own adventures in exploring Athens, they drew directional lines on a printed map because "sometimes Google Maps doesn't know all the little streets." So true!
