A very comfortable and historical hotel. Close to Barnard Castle and Bishop Auckland

Easy car parking. Beautiful manor house with lots of history, artifacts and rustic features. The corridors are a little creaky but carpeted and steps leading to the upstairs rooms are shallow and with handrail. The staff were friendly and welcoming, the room had all the necessary things - kettle, tea, coffee and hot chocolate, shampoo, shower gel and conditioner. WiFi was easy to connect to, there was an information point with leaflets for local attractions and the restaurant easy to book on arrival.

Dated rooms, noisy floors, 20pounds to use gym and make sure not to book twin room, mega small beds with hard old pillows

Friendly, country hotel, slightly shabby in places and chic in others but charming and super staff who go out of their way to help. We enjoyed our stay, beds were very comfortable and spa good, but we could hear floor creaking from other rooms when people were moving around.

The room was really warm even after adjusting the thermostat. Price of meals and drinks were fair. The staff great.

Brilliant stay! The staff were very friendly and attentive and were happy to upgrade my room free of charge after requesting a room with a bath. The room (27) was spacious and clean and the bed comfortable. The bathroom was clean and shower had a good water pressure. The food at the restaurant was great and reasonably priced (pork cutlet and espresso creme brulee highly recommended). The booking offered a complementary breakfast of toast, jams, yoghurt, cereals, fruit etc and had a decent selection. Really nice walking/running routes behind the hotel leading off into the countryside also. Its a pity that hotel customers are not allowed to use the gym and pool however without paying extra for it. This was not made clear upon booking and I was slightly disappointed by this. Also would be nice to ditch the small single use toiletry minis and opt for more eco friendly shampoo/shower gel refill dispensers in the shower. Overall great stay and would 100% come back when next working in the area.

Hotel grounds were lovely. Booked mainly to use the gym but it was £20 extra and didn’t open till 8am (so not ideal if staying for business - but I should’ve checked prior). Bathrooms could do with a refresh.

Room 12 television not working bit disappointed as ive stayed here 5 times previously and all been spot on ! Time before put me in room 5 absolutely loved it.

Great location and gorgeous hotel one of my favourites

Room was spotless and cleaned every day. Every member of staff we encountered was friendly and professional. The building itself was absolutely stunning with bags of character. The spa was simple but clean and beautifully kept with fantastic staff who put us at ease while we were there. I was particularly impressed with the lovely changing area. We hope to make another visit in the near future

The hotel felt very homely, with a warm informal reception. It’s quite huge inside with many corridors creating a feeling of discovery. I have to give a special call out to the restaurant. Great menu and my choice was exceptional in every way. Service & food brilliant. Our room was the Thomas More suite; happily we escaped with heads intact!! Cavernous room with sufficient sockets. Didn’t really trust the old plumbing so avoided the shower. Would be in our shortlist should we stay in the area again. Will definitely
