A Travel Guide to Gunung Ledang Waterfall in Johor, Malaysia

This is a mystical destination in Malaysia that’s definitely worth a visit. Gunung Ledang, known in Western historical literature as Mount Ophir, isn’t just the highest peak in Johor, it’s a sacred place shrouded in the legendary tale of Puteri Gunung Ledang. At the foot of this mystical mountain, cool mountain streams flow through ancient rock crevices, forming the Gunung Ledang Waterfall.

The Gunung Ledang Waterfall feels like something straight out of a fairy tale. With water flowing among the trees and the sounds of crickets and forest animals all around, it’s like a Disneyland story come to life! Curious about this place? Let’s take a look at the attractions and activities you can enjoy there.

Why You Need to Visit Gunung Ledang Waterfall

The main attraction of Gunung Ledang Waterfall is the purity of its water, which flows directly from a spring at the mountain’s peak. The water is as clear as crystal! Plus, it’s refreshingly cold, offering an unparalleled sense of refreshment. It’s the perfect way to cool off after a day of activities in the tropical heat.

The waterfall system at Mount Ledang is divided into several levels of natural pools. These range from shallow pools at the bottom that are safe for children to deeper, calmer rock pools at the top for adults. Each level offers a relaxing spot with its own unique character.

Mount Ledang isn’t just appealing for its natural beauty. The mountain’s name is also closely tied to the legend of Puteri Gunung Ledang, one of the most famous Malay folktales.

According to the story, Sultan Mahmud Syah of the Malacca Sultanate wished to propose to Puteri Gunung Ledang. The princess then set forth seven conditions that were difficult to fulfill, including requests involving a golden and silver bridge and the blood of the sultan’s son. This story gives Mount Ledang a deeper cultural significance than that of a mere hiking destination.

Activities at Mount Ledang Waterfall

A vacation here is very enjoyable because there are various healing activities to participate in. You can also make the most of your visit since you’ve already paid for your ticket. Admission prices for Malaysian residents are RM5 for adults and RM3 for students or seniors. For non-Malaysian visitors, adult tickets are RM20, while students and seniors pay RM10.

Swimming and Playing in the Water

After walking about one kilometer through the forest, Kolam Puteri is a delightful spot to cool off. The water comes from the Ayer Panas River and forms several pools along the waterfall.

However, don’t treat these natural pools like regular swimming pools. The rocks around the waterfall can be slippery, and the depth of some areas isn’t always visible from the surface. Wear footwear with good traction when walking on the rocks and avoid climbing parts of the waterfall.

Picnicking in Nature

Don’t want to hike too far? You can still enjoy the Gunung Ledang area by having a picnic. The recreational area features gazebos and rest areas. Several stalls also offer food, drinks, and recreational gear. Facilities such as a prayer room, parking area, and rest areas make this area quite comfortable for family visits.

Trekking

Mount Ledang offers much more challenging trails for hikers. If your destination is just the Mount Ledang Waterfall, the trail to Kolam Puteri is relatively short. However, for experienced hikers, the Mount Ledang area offers a trek to the summit. Don’t confuse these two activities. The waterfall trek and the summit hike have different levels of difficulty and require different preparations.

Birdwatching and Photography

The forests around Mount Ledang are also a great draw for nature photography enthusiasts and birdwatchers. If you want to capture more serene photos, visit in the morning when the light is still soft and the area isn’t too crowded yet.

Location and How to Get There

Mount Ledang Waterfall is located in the Tangkak area of Johor. You can reach this location from various starting points.

From Kuala Lumpur, you can drive via the North-South Expressway. Take Exit 235 (Tangkak), then continue toward Tangkak and the Mount Ledang area.

If departing from Johor Bahru, you can also take the North-South Expressway northbound and exit at Tangkak. Use your navigation to head to Gunung Ledang Johor National Park (Waterfall), not just Gunung Ledang National Park. Both are in nearby areas but have different access points.

For travelers on a road trip from Malacca to Johor, Gunung Ledang can be an interesting stopover before continuing south. Its location in Tangkak also makes this destination easy to include in a road trip itinerary between Malacca and Johor.
