Chiling Waterfall: A River-Crossing Adventure in Selangor

Traveloka MY
5 min read

Getting to Chiling Waterfall means getting your feet wet. Tucked inside the forest of Peretak, Hulu Selangor, this multi-tiered waterfall can only be reached by a jungle trek that involves crossing the Chiling River several times.

That’s what makes Chiling different from a quick waterfall stop. If you're up for a little adventure, here's what to know about the trek, when to visit, how to get there, and what to pack.

Why Chiling Waterfall Is Worth the Trek

Chiling isn't simply about reaching a waterfall at the end of a trail. The route takes you through the Chiling River and surrounding forest, with the sound of flowing water accompanying much of the journey.

The waterfall itself has three tiers, although only the first tier is open to the public. The main waterfall drops into a large natural pool, with forest and rock formations surrounding the area.

The river is also part of a protected mahseer fish sanctuary, so the visit comes with a stronger conservation element than a typical recreational waterfall. Fishing is prohibited in the sanctuary.

In other words, Chiling is best suited to travellers who don't mind getting their feet wet and see the journey as part of the reward.

Best Time to Visit Chiling Waterfall

Timing matters more at Chiling than it might at an easy-access waterfall. The sanctuary is currently listed as open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with Monday listed as a day off.

An early start is a sensible choice. You'll have more time for the trek, river crossings and return journey without rushing against the closing time. It can also make the experience more comfortable before the day gets hotter.

What About the Entrance Fee?

A nominal entrance fee is charged, although the current Tourism Selangor listing does not publish the latest amount. Older Tourism Selangor material confirms that admission is required, so check the current fee and registration procedure before your trip.

Most importantly, don't treat the opening hours as a guarantee that the trail will remain safe throughout the day. Heavy rain upstream can cause the river level to rise quickly. If conditions deteriorate, the crossing should be abandoned and visitors should leave the area.

How to Get to Chiling Waterfall from Kuala Lumpur

Chiling Waterfall is around 12 km from Kuala Kubu Bharu and is most conveniently reached by car. From Kuala Lumpur, head towards Kuala Kubu Bharu before continuing along Federal Route 55 towards Fraser's Hill.

The official Tourism Selangor route advises taking the PLUS Highway to Exit 116, continuing towards Kuala Kubu Bharu, then following Federal Route 55 for around 11 km. After crossing a steel arch bridge, look for the car park on the left. From there, the entrance is roughly a 100-metre walk along the road.

For a trip that already involves several river crossings, having your transport sorted before you arrive can save you a headache at the end of the day. If you're driving from Kuala Lumpur, consider booking a car rental on Traveloka in advance so you have more flexibility with your departure time and the rest of your Hulu Selangor itinerary.

What the Chiling Waterfall Trek Is Like

The trek to the main waterfall takes roughly an hour, with multiple crossings of the Chiling River along the route. Here's what the trek is like from start to finish:

1. Start at the Fish Sanctuary

The trek begins near the registration area and campsite, where you'll enter Chiling's mahseer fish sanctuary. Fishing is prohibited here, so follow the sanctuary rules before continuing along the trail.

2. Cross the River

You'll cross the Chiling River several times on the way to the waterfall. Water levels can change after rainfall, so expect to get your feet wet and take extra care on slippery rocks.

3. Follow the Forest Trail

Between crossings, the trail winds through lush forest alongside the river. Take your time, especially where the ground and rocks are wet.

4. Reach the Main Waterfall

The trail eventually leads to the first tier of Chiling Waterfall and its large natural pool. The upper two tiers remain closed to visitors for safety reasons.

What to Bring for the Chiling Waterfall Trek

Pack for a hike where getting wet is part of the plan rather than an accident.

Grippy water shoes or sturdy footwear
A dry bag to keep your phone, wallet and other valuables protected from splashes
Change of clothes
Enough drinking water and light snacks
Sun protection, like hat and sunscreen
Small first-aid essentials for minor scrapes or blisters.
Cash for entrance fees, parking or other small expenses.

And keep your bag as light as possible. You have a river to cross several times, so there's no prize for bringing half your house along.

More Places to Explore Around Kuala Kubu Bharu

Chiling can easily become the centrepiece of a longer Kuala Kubu Bharu day or weekend rather than a standalone stop. The area is known for its mix of outdoor activities, forest landscapes and heritage attractions.

1. Kuala Kubu Bharu Town

Give yourself time to explore the town before or after your waterfall trip. Kuala Kubu Bharu has a distinct heritage character and is a practical place to stop for food and a slower-paced break after the trek.

2. Selangor Dam Viewpoint

The Selangor Dam area offers a completely different kind of landscape from the enclosed rainforest around Chiling. It's an easy addition if you're already travelling through the Kuala Kubu Bharu area.

3. Bukit Kutu

If one waterfall trek isn't enough, Bukit Kutu offers a more demanding hiking experience with views over the surrounding landscape. It makes more sense as a separate hiking day rather than something to squeeze in after Chiling.

4. Hulu Tamu Hot Springs

For the opposite of a river-crossing adventure, head towards Hulu Tamu Hot Springs. The hot springs are another attraction in the wider Hulu Selangor area and can work well as a more relaxed stop on a longer getaway.

Where to Stay Around Kuala Kubu Bharu

If you're travelling from Kuala Lumpur, Chiling can be done as a day trip. But staying around Kuala Kubu Bharu gives you more breathing room to explore other destinations. So, here are some recommended places to stay:

1. Sarang by the Brook

Located around Kuala Kubu Bharu, Sarang by the Brook offers a more nature-oriented stay with an outdoor pool, BBQ facilities and rooms with private balconies or patios. It's a good fit if you'd rather extend the forest-and-river theme beyond the waterfall itself.

2. The Lumpang Resort

Located in Kerling, The Lumpang Resort provides a straightforward base in Hulu Selangor, with rooms, a swimming pool and an on-site restaurant. It's suited to travellers who want somewhere practical to stay while exploring the surrounding area.
