Temurun Waterfall is one of Langkawi’s most scenic natural attractions, tucked into the Machinchang Geoforest Park near Datai Bay. As Langkawi’s tallest waterfall, it offers a refreshing escape surrounded by dense rainforest, with the waterfall and natural pools accessible after a short walk from the road.
There’s no admission fee, and the short walk from the road means you don’t need to set aside an entire day for the visit. You can easily pair Temurun with other attractions around Langkawi, making it a convenient stop on a longer island itinerary.
Temurun is different from many waterfall attractions because you don’t need to commit an entire day to reach it. The waterfall is clearly visible from the road, with a short path leading towards the falls.
The setting is the bigger draw. Located within the Machinchang Geoforest Park, Temurun is surrounded by rainforest and limestone landscapes characteristic of Langkawi’s UNESCO Global Geopark.
And unlike some paid attractions around Langkawi, Temurun Waterfall is free to visit, making it an easy addition to your island itinerary.
Temurun Waterfall is located along Jalan Datai in the northwest of Langkawi, near Datai Bay. Since it’s away from the island’s main tourist areas, planning your transport in advance will make the journey more convenient.
Renting a car or scooter gives you the most flexibility, particularly if you plan to combine Temurun with other attractions around the island. Parking is available near the entrance, making it convenient if you’re driving yourself.
You can also take a taxi or ride-hailing service to the waterfall. However, it’s best to arrange your return journey in advance rather than relying on finding a ride after you finish exploring.

The visit itself is relatively straightforward, but the experience can change depending on recent rainfall. Here’s what you can expect during a visit and the activities you can enjoy along the way:
From the parking area, a paved path and stairs lead towards the waterfall. The walk is short enough that Temurun can work as a quick nature stop rather than a full-day trek.
The waterfall cascades down the rocky landscape into pools surrounded by greenery. If conditions are safe and swimming is permitted, you can cool off in the water.
Be cautious around wet rocks and follow any safety notices on site, particularly after heavy rain when water levels and currents can change.
The forest surrounding the waterfall is home to wildlife, including macaques. If you encounter them along the path, keep your food and belongings secure and avoid feeding or approaching them.
For Temurun, water conditions matter more than simply choosing a particular time of day. Tourism Malaysia recommends visiting between May and October, when the waterfall generally has more water, while noting that it can be reduced to a trickle during drier conditions.
If you want a quieter experience, visiting earlier in the day can also make the short walk and surrounding area more comfortable.

Temurun works particularly well as one stop in a wider Langkawi itinerary. After spending time at the waterfall, you can continue towards other attractions depending on your route.
Located near Temurun, Datai Bay offers a completely different experience with its forested surroundings and coastline. It’s a natural choice if you want to continue exploring the quieter northwest of Langkawi.
For panoramic views instead of rainforest scenery, head towards Langkawi SkyCab and Sky Bridge. The cable car takes you up Gunung Machinchang, where elevated viewpoints reveal Langkawi’s mountains, coastline, and surrounding islands.
If you’re heading back towards Langkawi’s main tourist area, Pantai Cenang is an easy change of pace. Spend the rest of the day swimming, relaxing by the beach, or exploring the many restaurants and shops around the coast.
For another side of Langkawi’s natural landscape, continue to Kilim Karst Geoforest Park. Its limestone formations, mangroves, and waterways can be explored by boat, offering an experience that feels completely different from a rainforest waterfall.
Travelling with family? Langkawi Wildlife Park offers a more structured wildlife experience, with a variety of Malaysian and other animal species. It can also provide a change of pace after spending the morning outdoors at Temurun.
