Planning to drive overseas? An International Driving Permit (IDP) is the official document that translates your Malaysian driving licence into nine languages, making it recognised by traffic authorities in more than 150 countries. Whether you are planning a self-drive road trip through Thailand, renting a car in Europe, or exploring the open roads of Australia, your IDP is the document that keeps you on the right side of the law.
In Malaysia, only two authorised bodies issue IDPs: the Road Transport Department (Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan, or JPJ) and the Automobile Association of Malaysia (AAM). The process is straightforward, the fee is fixed at RM150, and in most cases you can walk out with your IDP booklet the same day you apply.

An IDP is not a standalone driving licence. It is a standardised booklet issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic that translates your existing Malaysian driving licence into nine languages, including French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, and Chinese. You must always carry your original Malaysian licence alongside it whenever you drive abroad.
Many countries require an IDP for car hire, even if their traffic laws technically allow foreign nationals to drive on a national licence. In Australia, car rental operators commonly request an IDP as proof of identification alongside your licence. In the United Kingdom and across Europe, it is strongly recommended for any self-drive trip. In Thailand, traffic police regularly ask to see an IDP at checkpoints, particularly when you are renting a vehicle. Having one removes all uncertainty and lets you focus entirely on enjoying the journey.
Eligibility is clear-cut. You must hold a full, non-probationary Malaysian driving licence for Class B2 (motorcycle) or Class D (car). P licence holders are not eligible and must complete the two-year probationary period and convert to a full licence before applying. Your driving licence must also remain valid for at least one year from your application date, and you must have no outstanding traffic summonses at the time of application.
The minimum age to apply is 18 years old. Both Malaysian citizens and permanent residents holding a valid MyKad are eligible. Applicants who hold a valid Malaysian passport are also eligible, provided all other conditions are met.
Preparing your documents in advance will make the application process much faster, whether you visit a JPJ branch, an AAM office, or initiate your application via the MyJPJ app.
Bring your original MyKad along with a photocopy of both sides, as the counter requires biometric verification and will not accept a photocopy alone. You will also need your original full driving licence with a photocopy of both sides. Prepare two recent passport-sized photographs measuring 35mm x 50mm against a white background. Collect Form JPJ L1 from any JPJ branch or AAM office at no charge, and complete it before joining the queue.
For the digital route, install the MyJPJ app and ensure you have an active MyDigital ID for login, which became mandatory for all MyJPJ users aged 12 and above from May 2026. Upload a digital passport-sized photo with a plain white background directly within the app's IDP application flow. Payment is completed cashlessly via FPX, credit card, or an e-wallet. You may then choose courier delivery, which takes three to five working days, or nominate a JPJ branch for self-collection.
The fee is fixed at RM150 per year, set by the Ministry of Transport and non-refundable regardless of application method. This fee applies whether you apply through JPJ or AAM. There is no renewal option; when your IDP expires, you must submit a fresh application at the same RM150 rate. The IDP is valid for one year from the date of issue, or until your Malaysian driving licence expires, whichever date comes first.
Confirm that you hold a full non-probationary Malaysian driving licence with at least one year of remaining validity. Log into the MyJPJ app or visit a JPJ counter to check for any outstanding traffic summonses under your name. Clear all outstanding summonses before proceeding, as unpaid fines will block your IDP application at the counter. Once your licence status is clean and confirmed, you are ready to move forward.
Prepare your original MyKad and driving licence, two white-background passport-sized photos, and a completed Form JPJ L1. Make photocopies of both sides of your MyKad and your driving licence before you leave home. Double-check that your photos meet the size requirement of 35mm x 50mm, as incorrect photo dimensions are one of the most common reasons for counter rejections. If applying through the MyJPJ app, ensure your MyDigital ID is active and your digital photo file is ready for upload in JPG or PNG format.
Three application methods are available to Malaysian applicants. The first is the MyJPJ app: log in with your MyDigital ID, navigate to the Driving Licence tab, select "Apply for IDP," upload your photo, and pay RM150 digitally. You can then choose between courier delivery (three to five working days) and self-collection at a designated JPJ branch.
The second method is a walk-in visit to any JPJ state branch or Urban Transformation Centre (UTC). Present your documents at the counter, pay RM150, and receive your IDP booklet on the spot within approximately 30 to 45 minutes. The third method is to visit an Automobile Association of Malaysia (AAM) office, with locations in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Johor Bahru, and several other cities. AAM staff can also advise you on traffic regulations and driving requirements specific to your destination, which is particularly helpful for first-time international drivers.
At JPJ branches and AAM offices, payment is accepted by cash, debit card, or credit card. Via the MyJPJ app, payment is processed using FPX, credit card, or an e-wallet of your choice. Keep your payment receipt as proof of transaction throughout your travels. No additional processing charges apply at JPJ branches; AAM offices may levy a small service fee depending on location.
Walk-in applicants at JPJ branches and UTCs receive their IDP booklet the same day, with processing taking between 30 and 45 minutes from document submission to collection. App applicants who select courier delivery can expect their booklet to arrive within three to five working days. It is advisable to apply at least one week before your intended departure date to allow buffer time for any unforeseen delays. Store your IDP booklet together with your original Malaysian driving licence in a travel document pouch, as you are legally required to carry both whenever you drive abroad.
Thailand is the most popular self-drive destination for Malaysians, and the overland border crossing from the north of Peninsular Malaysia makes it highly accessible by car. The IDP is required for renting a vehicle and is routinely checked at traffic stops throughout the country. Driving in Thailand follows the same left-hand traffic convention as Malaysia, which makes the adjustment easy for most Malaysian drivers. Well-maintained highways link major cities such as Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Phuket, offering scenic and comfortable long-distance drives.
A self-drive tour through Europe is a bucket-list experience for many Malaysian travellers, and an IDP makes it fully attainable. With your IDP in hand, you can pick up a rental car in one country and return it in another, crossing borders freely within the Schengen Zone. Popular self-drive circuits include Paris to the French Riviera, the Scottish Highlands, the Amalfi Coast, and the Rhine Valley route through Germany. Road infrastructure across Western Europe is excellent, with clear signage and predictable driving conditions throughout.
Driving in the UK is particularly comfortable for Malaysians because both countries use left-hand traffic and right-hand-drive vehicles. Your IDP is strongly recommended for car rental agreements and is accepted across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Popular self-drive routes include the scenic Scottish Highlands, the rolling villages of the Cotswolds, and the dramatic coastal roads of Cornwall. Motorway speed limits are 70 mph (approximately 113 km/h), and road surfaces are consistently well-maintained.
Australia is another left-hand traffic country, which significantly reduces the adjustment period that Malaysian drivers typically face in Continental Europe. An IDP is required by the vast majority of car rental operators throughout Australia. Iconic self-drive routes include the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, the Pacific Coast Highway from Sydney to Cairns, and the Red Centre outback circuit departing from Alice Springs. Apply for your IDP well ahead of your flight, particularly if you choose courier delivery, to ensure it arrives before your departure date.
Japan requires a Japanese translation of your foreign driving licence, which the IDP provides under the 1949 Geneva Convention that both Malaysia and Japan have ratified. Driving in Japan opens up regions that are difficult to reach comfortably by public transport, such as rural Hokkaido, the Ise-Shima Peninsula, and the San'in Kinki coastline. Roads are meticulously maintained, speed limits are clearly posted, and English signage has expanded significantly across the country in recent years. Pre-booking a car rental through Traveloka before you depart ensures your vehicle is waiting and confirmed upon arrival.
Discover activities at each of your destinations to round out your self-drive itinerary, from cultural experiences to outdoor adventures, all bookable in one place.
Research the specific traffic laws of your destination country before you depart, as speed limits, drink-driving thresholds, mobile phone regulations, and seat belt rules differ significantly between countries. Purchase comprehensive travel insurance that includes personal accident cover and third-party vehicle liability, especially in destinations where your Malaysian motor insurance policy provides no coverage. Traveloka offers travel insurance options that you can add directly to your booking. Pre-book your airport transfer at your destination for a smooth start to your trip on arrival day.
A reliable data connection is essential for navigation, live traffic updates, and emergency communication when driving in an unfamiliar country. Pick up a travel eSIM before your trip so you have mobile data from the moment you land, without the cost of international roaming charges. Traveloka offers eSIM options for most popular Malaysian travel destinations, and you can purchase one as part of your travel bundle. Download offline maps for your destination as a backup for areas with limited signal coverage, particularly in rural or mountainous regions.
Always keep your original Malaysian driving licence and your IDP together in one accessible location, such as a dedicated document pouch in the glove compartment. Familiarise yourself with local emergency numbers before you set off: 999 is used in Malaysia and the UK, 000 in Australia, 112 across Europe, and 110 in Japan. Take a break every two hours on long-distance drives, as driver fatigue is one of the leading causes of road incidents for travellers in unfamiliar environments. Check Traveloka promotions for bundled travel deals that combine flights, hotels, and car rentals at a single discounted rate before you finalise your itinerary.
