First day of the trip

Now it’s morning and it’s time to travel to Nan. We headed to Don Mueng Airport and were ready to take off from Bangkok to Nan. This whole trip is a road trip, meaning we would need a car to drive to every destination in the city.

So of course, another thing that we need apart from plane tickets and accommodation is a car. A rental car that we booked for this trip was via Traveloka. It offers rental car service in many cities in Thailand. Just select the place to get your car, passengers, date, time and pick a car that you want – press the booking button and you are all set. Just do it before travelling and no more negotiating or finding the right place to book your car.

When we arrived at the airport in Nan, we went to get the car that we had booked and departed to the first destination – Phumin temple. One of the temples in the city that is famous for wall paintings. The well-known ‘The Whisper of Love’ painting is a colour drawing of a couple, a man whispering to a woman – people believe that he is whispering sweet words to his lover. An Iconic painting that you might have seen somewhere in the postcard.

The painting is not only the highlight of this temple but it is the place for Thai people to come and pray as well. If you get a chance to visit Nan, do not miss this temple.

After being impressed with the beauty of the temple, then we moved across the place to meet another beauty – Tunnel of Plumeria. This tunnel is located in the Nan national museum. Come to this place around January or February, when all the flowers are blooming and witness this wonderful white tunnel. Besides the view is captivating but the fragrance of these tropical flowers will make it an unforgettable moment.

We walked for a while so now it’s time for a small break. We started getting hungry so we chose a fusion food restaurant called ‘Cafe' Soodgongdee’. The shop is set next to the river, covered in tree shades to let customers feel comfortable. We ordered foods and coffees, eating and sipping under the trees – felt relaxing and refreshing at the same time.

We drove to the hotel after finishing our meal to check-in and drop our belongings, then drove to another destination -- Wat Ming Muang. One of the oldest temples of the city, more than 149 years. A place that keeps a city pillar shrine under the glamorous white chapel, decorated in artistic painting.

This sacred temple is respected by the locals and tourists, lots of people visit the temple and pray for their successful life. So, it is a familiar sight to see this place crowded with people almost every day.

Ending this day with another elegant temple -- Wat Sripanton. Notable for its elegance, crafting and decorations. This ancient temple was founded by the King of Phuka dynasty, hundreds of years ago. The architecture is all golden and decorated with handmade, state of the art crafting and painting. We also spotted the seven-headed Naga on both sides of the stair from the top-tier crafter, make this place more sacred and beautiful than ever.

Second day of the trip

We woke up to the beautiful morning, so we chose to go exploring the nature of Nan at Wang Sila Lang. Another unseen checkpoint with a nickname of ‘Pua City Grand Canyon’ with cliffs like a small canyon and water running in between.

Mesmerized by the beauty of nature work from the erosion. You can go relaxing in cold water as well.

After refreshing ourselves with water and cool breeze in the canyon, we drove to a small and local village called ‘Sapanna Village’ a tiny neighbourhood yet full of life. In this village, you will find a route to walk along and get to know the locals and their way of living. There are hostels available here, so you can choose to take a break and loosen up for a night. With rice fields and mist fog in the morning – This place is actually a heaven on earth.

Next spot that we would like to introduce you, is one-of-a-kind places or actually the only place in the world that produces rock salt from the mountains. A highlight that you should not miss!

This is the place where they produce natural rock salt with two wells, the north well and south well. While the production is still the same as the old time, people will pull up salt water and boil it for 4-5 hours so that water evaporates until only salt is left. You also get the chance to buy natural rock salt from this place as a souvenir, or to season your own food.

The last day in Nan

Time flies! It’s now the third and last day of our trip. Everybody starts a good day with coffee, so we first headed to the coffee shop called ‘Ban Tai Lue Café’. The shop serves both coffee and good food, and is famous for the scenery. Sipping coffee and enjoying your food while looking at the greenish rice field (or yellowish if you are travelling in harvest season), just cannot be any better than this!

Lastly, we chose to visit the temple for a blessing before going back to Bangkok. The name of the temple is ‘Phuket Temple’ and yes, you read it right. We are still in Nan, not in the south on Phuket island. It is named after the village on a hill where this temple is located called ‘Ket’. While Phu means hill and Ket is the name of the village, altogether meaning a temple on a hill called Ket.

As we told you before, the temple is located on a hill, so you will get a 360-degree view of the surrounding rice fields. Tourists and locals visit the temple and pray for the blessing with a Buddha statue that is well-known for the blessing of success in working life and money. So don’t forget to come here and take a look at the view.

Last stop for this trip is Huanam Mushroom Farm. It is a mushroom farm but also offers food from mushrooms. A signature dish here is Mushroom Pizza. Try hot thin and crispy pizza with tasty mushrooms for lunch and other Thai cuisines made from mushrooms like stir-fried mushroom or spicy mushroom salad. A plus is the view of the farm. Enjoy your lunch with good food and good view, definitely a great end to a great day.

And that is the road trip in Nan that we have gathered all the details for you! Get to know the local’s way of living, be absorbed in a beautiful nature and fill your stomach with delicious good food. Start planning your trip like us and book a cheap flight to Nan. Get ready and go!
