Cumin and marigolds hang in the air along Serangoon Road, and a six-storey temple tower rises above shopfronts selling saris, spices, and Bollywood posters. Little India rewards a half-day visit, ideally starting early before the heat and crowds set in.

Built in 1881 by Bengali labourers, this six-storey South Indian gopuram dedicated to the goddess Kali anchors Serangoon Road visually and spiritually. Prayers run three times daily, at 6:30 am, 11:30 am, and 6:30 pm, and covering shoulders and knees is required before stepping inside. Incense and devotional music fill the temple during active prayer, so photography then should wait until the ritual has finished.
Tekka Centre splits into two very different floors. The ground level runs as a wet market, stacked with seafood, tropical fruit, and fresh vegetables, while the upper floor holds hawker stalls spanning South Indian, Malay, and Chinese cooking. Two Michelin Bib Gourmand names sit among them: Allauddin's Biryani and Delhi Lahori. Beyond food, Tekka also sells Indian clothing, saris, jewellery, and religious items in the same building.
Comparing hotels along Serangoon Road puts you close enough to walk to Tekka Centre before the morning market thins out.
Tucked off Serangoon Road on Campbell Lane, the Arcade specialises in jasmine garlands, spices, Bollywood posters, bindis, and bangles. It's compact enough to browse in twenty minutes but easy to linger in longer once the smell of fresh jasmine and sandalwood takes hold.
Open 24 hours, Mustafa Centre spans six floors and carries an enormous range of goods, from groceries and electronics to jewellery and currency exchange. Its supermarket stocks Indian and Southeast Asian ingredients that most other Singapore supermarkets simply don't carry. Farrer Park MRT sits closest to this end of the district.
Completed in 1907, Abdul Gafoor Mosque blends South Indian and Moorish architectural styles into one building, with a clock tower and Arabic calligraphy inside the prayer hall. As a National Monument serving Singapore's South Indian Muslim community, it welcomes respectful visitors outside prayer times.
A river cruise or a hawker culture food tour, both bookable through Traveloka's activities listings, makes a solid pairing with a Little India walk if you're building out a fuller day in the area.
Serangoon Road ties the whole district together, with side lanes like Kerbau Road, Dunlop Street, and Buffalo Road branching off it. Walking from Little India MRT up to Farrer Park takes about two hours at a relaxed pace, covering most of what's listed here along the way.
Markets and temples show best before 10 am, before the day heats up. Evenings shift the mood toward street food and shopping instead. Deepavali, usually in October or November, turns the whole neighbourhood into a genuinely different experience with lights and festival crowds.
Little India MRT (NE7/DT12) serves the southern half of the district, while Farrer Park MRT (NE8) sits closer to Mustafa Centre and the northern stretch.
Modest dress and shoe removal apply at every temple here, and asking before photographing anyone mid-prayer is basic courtesy rather than an optional nicety.
Beyond Tekka Centre's stalls, the streets around Serangoon Road hold a dense cluster of standalone Indian restaurants, from banana-leaf rice specialists to South Indian breakfast spots serving dosa before most of the city has woken up. Virtually everything in the district is halal-certified or Muslim-friendly, which simplifies planning a meal for a mixed group considerably.
An airport transfer gets you from Changi into the neighbourhood without any guesswork on arrival, and a car rental is rarely needed given how walkable this entire district is.
Traveloka is Southeast Asia's leading travel platform, trusted by over 100 million users across the region.
