Free Masterpieces: Rome's Churches as Art Galleries

St. Peter's Basilica and St. Peter's Square

Entry to St. Peter's Basilica is free. Inside: Michelangelo's Pieta, his architectural dome, and Bernini's towering baldachin at 29 metres. St. Peter's Square is open 24 hours a day. Note that climbing the dome carries a separate fee; the basilica itself is entirely free.

San Luigi dei Francesi: Three Caravaggio Paintings in One Chapel

Just a short walk from Piazza Navona, the Contarelli Chapel contains three Caravaggio masterpieces: The Calling of Saint Matthew (1599--1600), The Martyrdom of Saint Matthew (1600--1601), and Saint Matthew and the Angel (1602). Free entry.

Santa Maria del Popolo, San Pietro in Vincoli, and Santa Maria Sopra Minerva

Santa Maria del Popolo (Cerasi Chapel) contains two Caravaggios plus Raphael's Chigi Chapel. Free entry. San Pietro in Vincoli houses Michelangelo's Moses, carved for Pope Julius II's tomb. Free entry. Santa Maria Sopra Minerva (beside the Pantheon) contains Michelangelo's Christ Carrying the Cross and is Rome's only Gothic interior church. Free entry.

Free Piazzas, Hilltop Panoramas, and Ancient Sites

Piazza Navona

One of Rome's grandest baroque public spaces, featuring Bernini's Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (Fountain of the Four Rivers) at centre. Free and open around the clock.

Trevi Fountain

The piazza view is free. As of 2 February 2026, a €2 ticket is required for close-up access to the inner basin during operating hours (Mon and Fri 11:30am--10pm; other days 9am--10pm). Viewing from the piazza costs nothing; basin access is also free after 10pm.

Pincian Hill (Pincio Terrace) and Villa Borghese

The 80-hectare Villa Borghese park is free to walk through. The Pincio Terrace delivers Rome's finest sunset panorama: St. Peter's dome in the mid-ground, Piazza del Popolo below. (Borghese Gallery inside requires a ticket.)

Janiculum Hill (Gianicolo) and Aventine Hill

Janiculum Hill offers sweeping views across the entire city. Free. The Giardino degli Aranci (Garden of Oranges) on the Aventine offers a romantic city panorama. Nearby: the keyhole at the Priory of the Knights of Malta perfectly frames St. Peter's dome between manicured hedges.

Circus Maximus

The ancient chariot-racing stadium that once held 250,000 spectators is free to walk through and around as a public green space.

Free Museum Days Worth Planning Around

First Sunday of the month: All Italian state museums open free, including the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill. Book your free timed entry slot online in advance -- very popular.

Last Sunday of the month: Vatican Museums (including Sistine Chapel) open free 9am--2pm. Arrive well before opening time.

Rome has over 2,500 nasoni street drinking fountains dispensing free, clean drinking water throughout the city. Book your airport transfer in advance to start your trip smoothly from Fiumicino or Ciampino, and look into a car rental if you plan to day-trip to Ostia Antica or Tivoli. Most of the free sites in this guide are concentrated in the historic centre. Hotels in the Trastevere, Prati, and Monti neighbourhoods offer easy access to the major piazzas and churches. Traveloka lets you compare hundreds of options across all price points.
