From the romance of Paris and Rome to the canals of Amsterdam and the architecture of Barcelona, Europe rewards every type of traveller. The best part: one Schengen visa unlocks 29 countries at once. Before you book your flights, here is everything you need to know about applying for a Schengen visa in 2026, including the major border system change that took effect in April 2026.

What Is a Schengen Visa and Which Countries Does It Cover?

A Schengen Type C visa is a short-stay visa that allows you to stay for up to 90 days within any 180-day period across all 29 Schengen member states: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

With a single Schengen visa, you can cross internal borders between member states freely, without repeated immigration checks. Vietnamese citizens are not visa-exempt for the Schengen zone and must apply before departure.

Which Embassy Should You Apply To?

This is one of the most common points of confusion for first-time Schengen applicants. The rule is straightforward:

Apply to the embassy or consulate of the country where you will spend the most nights.
If your nights are split equally between two or more countries, apply to the embassy of the first country you enter.
If you are only passing through without a clear main destination, apply to the embassy of the country that is your primary purpose for the trip.

In Vietnam, applications are submitted through authorised visa application centres in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Each embassy designates its own centre, so confirm which centre handles your chosen country before booking an appointment.

Book your hotels in Europe in advance so you have confirmed reservation documents ready to attach to your visa application.

Schengen Visa Document Checklist

The standard document requirements apply across most Schengen embassies:

Valid passport with at least 3 months of validity beyond your planned departure from the Schengen zone and at least 2 blank pages
One passport-sized photo (3.5x4.5cm, white background, taken within the last 6 months)
Completed Schengen visa application form, signed and dated
Travel insurance valid across the entire Schengen zone, covering a minimum of €30,000 for emergency medical expenses and repatriation
Bank statements for the past 3-6 months showing regular income and a stable balance, with a reference minimum of around USD 7,000 equivalent
Employment proof: employment contract, company confirmation letter and recent payslips; or business registration and tax documents if self-employed
Approved leave letter from your employer
Confirmed return flight tickets
Hotel booking confirmations or a letter of invitation from a host in Europe
Detailed day-by-day travel itinerary

Individual embassies may request additional documents such as proof of property ownership or family ties in Vietnam to strengthen your application.

Step-by-Step Application Process in Vietnam

1.
Determine your embassy based on your primary destination or first country of entry.
2.
Book an appointment at the authorised visa application centre designated by that embassy. Book early — peak season slots fill up quickly.
3.
Prepare your full document package according to the specific checklist published by your chosen embassy.
4.
Attend your appointment, submit your documents and pay all fees on the day.
5.
Provide biometrics (fingerprints and a digital photo) if this is your first Schengen application or your previous biometric data is more than 5 years old.
6.
Track your application via the online portal of your visa centre.
7.
Collect your passport with visa sticker at the centre or via courier once a decision has been made.

While waiting for your visa, start planning the activities and attractions you want to experience across Europe.

Schengen Visa Fees and Processing Times in 2026

Visa fees are set centrally by the EU and apply uniformly across all Schengen embassies:

Adults: €90
Children aged 6-12: €45
Children under 6: Free
Visa centre service fee: approximately €16-24 depending on the centre

All fees are non-refundable regardless of outcome. Standard processing takes 15 working days, but can extend to 30-60 days during peak travel season (April to August). You may submit your application up to 6 months before your travel date. Applying at least 6-8 weeks before departure is strongly recommended to allow buffer time.

Important Update: Europe's EES Border System Is Now Live

Since 10 April 2026, the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully operational at all Schengen border crossings. This is the most significant change to European border management in decades and directly affects every Vietnamese traveller visiting Europe.

EES replaces the traditional passport stamp system. Each time you enter or exit the Schengen zone, your facial image and four fingerprints are registered electronically alongside your passport details and travel dates. The system automatically tracks your 90-day allowance within any 180-day window.

What this means for your trip:

Your first-ever EES registration at the border takes an additional 5-10 minutes. Allow extra time when arriving at airports or land border crossings.
On subsequent entries, the process is faster as your data is already in the system.
The 90-in-180 day limit is now monitored automatically and precisely — make sure your stay does not exceed it.

Tips for a Successful Schengen Visa Application

Build a detailed, logical itinerary before applying. A well-structured day-by-day plan shows genuine travel intent and makes your application easier to assess.
Travel insurance is mandatory, not optional. Choose a policy with at least €30,000 coverage valid across the full Schengen zone for your entire stay.
Bank statements should reflect consistent income and a stable balance over 3-6 months. Avoid large unexplained deposits just before applying, as these raise questions.
Book airport transfers and consider a car rental for your European road trips — confirmed bookings add weight to your application.
Submit early. During summer, visa centre appointment slots and processing times both stretch significantly.
Ensure every piece of information across your application form, itinerary and supporting documents is fully consistent.
