Best Places to Travel in Autumn 2026: 5 Destinations for Fall Foliage, Festivals, and Warm Seas

Autumn is one of the finest travel seasons on the calendar. From mid-September through November, the Northern Hemisphere shifts into a cooler, crisper gear -- forests ignite in red and gold, iconic festivals fill city squares, and popular summer destinations shed their crowds without losing any of their appeal. Whether you are chasing the fiery maple forests of Japan, raising a stein at the world's most famous beer festival, or swimming in a still-warm Adriatic Sea, autumn delivers some of travel's most rewarding experiences.

These five destinations represent the best of autumn travel across Asia, Europe, and North America. Each offers something distinct: Kyoto for its unrivalled koyo season, Munich for Oktoberfest, New York for its golden Central Park and Hudson Valley orchards, Dubrovnik for its sun-warmed Old Town without the summer crush, and Seoul for its vivid mountain foliage. Book your flights early for autumn travel -- October and November are peak periods for Japan and Korea in particular.

1. Kyoto, Japan: Koyo Autumn Foliage Season

If there is one destination that defines autumn travel in Asia, it is Kyoto. The Japanese phenomenon known as koyo -- the annual turning of the leaves -- transforms the city's Buddhist temples, shrine corridors, and riverside paths into a landscape of fiery red maple (momiji) and luminous yellow ginkgo. Peak foliage typically falls in mid to late November, and the cooler temperatures make exploring genuinely comfortable. October brings highs of 20--22°C and lows around 12°C, while November settles into highs of 14--17°C and lows of 8--10°C.

The major temple illuminations are the highlight of the season. Eikan-do, Shoren-in, Kodai-ji, Chion-in, and Kiyomizu-dera all run special night lighting events throughout November. The Arashiyama Momiji Festival on the second Sunday of November brings traditional boat processions, taiko drumming, and koto music to the Oi River. The Hitaki-sai Fire Festival at Fushimi Inari takes place on 8 November.

Search for hotels in Kyoto early -- the November foliage period books out quickly.

Kyoto's activities scene in autumn goes well beyond temple visits. Guided night illumination tours, tea ceremony experiences, and private boat experiences on the Oi River are among the most memorable ways to spend an autumn evening.

2. Munich, Germany: Oktoberfest 2026 and Bavarian Autumn

Munich's Oktoberfest needs little introduction, but the 2026 edition carries extra significance: it is the 191st running of the world's largest Volksfest. The festival runs from 19 September to 4 October 2026, with the ceremonial keg tapping at noon on 19 September in the Schottenhamel tent marking the official opening. The Costume and Riflemen's Parade on 20 September draws approximately 10,000 participants through the city streets in traditional Bavarian dress. September temperatures hover at highs of 17--20°C and lows of 8--11°C; October drops to highs around 13°C and lows of 5°C. The English Garden turns golden in October. Neuschwanstein Castle, roughly 1.5 hours from Munich, is at its most photogenic in October when the surrounding forests are in full autumn colour.

Munich has excellent connections from its international airport, and booking an airport transfer in advance is particularly useful during the Oktoberfest period.

From Oktoberfest guided tent tours to castle day trips in the autumn foliage, Munich's autumn activity options span a wide range of interests.

3. New York, USA: Fall Foliage in Central Park and the Hudson Valley

New York City in October is one of the great autumn travel experiences. Central Park's American elms along The Mall turn a sustained golden yellow through October, while Bow Bridge offers one of the city's most photographed autumn reflections. Early October brings highs of 15--20°C, while late October settles into highs of 8--14°C and lows of 2--5°C at night. The Hudson Valley, accessible within one to two hours from Midtown Manhattan, is one of North America's finest autumn foliage regions. The Catskills and the area around Woodstock offer apple orchards, farm stands, harvest festivals, and forests that peak in mid to late October. The Greenwich Village Halloween Parade on 31 October is one of New York's great free events.

Renting a car rental is the most flexible way to explore the Hudson Valley's orchards and foliage trails at your own pace.

New York's autumn calendar is rich in guided experiences, from Central Park foliage walking tours to Hudson Valley day trip packages and Halloween events.

4. Dubrovnik, Croatia: The Adriatic at Its Best in September and October

September and the first half of October represent Dubrovnik's sweet spot. The summer heat eases, the cruise ship crowds thin considerably, outdoor restaurants remain fully open, and the Adriatic Sea stays warm enough for comfortable swimming -- 24°C in September and 21°C in October. Prices drop noticeably from the August peak. Walking the 2km circuit of the Old Town city walls in autumn becomes genuinely pleasurable. The cable car to the summit of Mount Srd delivers panoramic views over the walled city. Sea kayaking around the base of the city walls and out to Lokrum Island is one of the most popular active experiences. A ferry day trip to the Elafiti Islands is a rewarding way to spend a full day on the water.

Check Traveloka promotions for autumn deals on Dubrovnik flights and hotels -- shoulder season pricing often means significant savings compared to August rates.

From Old Town wall walking tours to sea kayaking and island ferry excursions, Dubrovnik's autumn activities are best booked in advance.

5. Seoul, South Korea: Autumn Foliage Season from Mid-October to November

Seoul's autumn foliage season runs from mid-October through November, and it rivals Kyoto for sheer visual impact. Bukhansan National Park turns into a mosaic of red, orange, and gold. October brings highs of 15--18°C and lows of 8--10°C; November drops to highs of 8--10°C and lows of 2--4°C, clear and dry throughout. The Huwon Secret Garden at Changdeokgung Palace is one of Seoul's most beautiful spaces in autumn. Namsan Mountain and the N Seoul Tower area sit surrounded by autumn forest in October and November. The Seoul Lantern Festival at Cheonggyecheon Stream, held in November, is one of the city's great free events: thousands of illuminated lanterns line the 6km restored stream through central Seoul.

Traveloka makes it easy to compare and book flights, hotels, and activities for Seoul's autumn season all in one place, trusted by over 100 million users across Asia and beyond.

Seoul's autumn activity options include guided foliage hikes in Bukhansan, Changdeokgung palace and Secret Garden tours, and lantern festival experiences along Cheonggyecheon during November.
