Location and How to Get to Chan Living

Address and Getting There

Chan Living is situated at Batu Dua, Jalan Bubul Haji Ahlindal, Semporna, Tawau, Sabah, Malaysia, with the postcode 91300. This location places you within the administrative district of Tawau, though it's important to note the proximity to Semporna, a well-known hub for island hopping and diving. The immediate neighborhood offers a glimpse into local life in Sabah, away from the more tourist-centric areas.

Navigating to Chan Living is straightforward for those arriving by air. Semporna Airport (SMM) is the closest airport, making it a convenient point of arrival. From the airport, you can arrange for a taxi or use an e-hailing service to reach the motel. While specific MYR costs for these services can vary, budgeting around RM 30-50 for a ride from Semporna Airport to the hotel is a reasonable estimate, depending on traffic and the service used.

For travelers coming from further afield in Malaysia, booking a flight to Tawau Airport (TWU) is the most efficient method. You can then take a taxi or e-hailing service from Tawau Airport to Chan Living. If you are planning an extensive trip across Sabah, consider using Traveloka to book flight tickets, ensuring you find competitive fares for your journey to this beautiful part of Malaysia.

What's Around Chan Living — Nearby Attractions and Places

While Chan Living is located in Tawau, its address in Batu Dua, Jalan Bubul Haji Ahlindal, places it within reasonable travel distance to the popular town of Semporna. Semporna is the primary departure point for excursions to world-renowned diving and snorkeling spots like Sipadan Island, Mabul Island, and Kapalai. Many travelers choose to stay in Tawau and make day trips or arrange transfers to Semporna for these aquatic adventures.

A significant draw for visitors is the opportunity to book attraction tickets for island hopping tours directly from Semporna. These tours often include visits to pristine beaches, vibrant coral reefs teeming with marine life, and opportunities to see local sea gypsy communities. You can book attraction packages that cater to various interests, from beginner snorkeling trips to advanced diving expeditions, ensuring you experience the best of Sabah's underwater world.

For those interested in local culture and produce, the Tawau town center offers markets and eateries. You can explore local markets to sample regional fruits and delicacies, or find authentic Malaysian cuisine at local restaurants. While not directly adjacent to major tourist sites, Chan Living serves as a practical base for those who wish to explore both the natural beauty of the surrounding islands and the local life within Tawau and Semporna.

Halal Dining Options Near Chan Living

Tawau and the surrounding Semporna area offer a variety of dining experiences that cater to Muslim travelers, ensuring you can enjoy local Malaysian cuisine with peace of mind. Many local eateries and restaurants in Tawau are either halal-certified or are known to be run by Muslim proprietors, serving traditional dishes prepared according to Islamic principles.

When exploring the local food scene, look for restaurants displaying the halal certification logo from JAKIM (Department of Islamic Development Malaysia) or the relevant state religious department. Even without a visible certificate, many smaller, family-run establishments in the region are trusted by the local Muslim community. Dishes like Nasi Campur, various types of seafood, and local vegetable preparations are widely available and prepared using halal ingredients.

For a truly authentic experience, venturing into local markets or food courts can be rewarding. Here, you can find a wide array of Malay and Sabahan dishes. Don't hesitate to ask vendors about their ingredients and preparation methods if you have any concerns. The friendly nature of the locals often means they are happy to explain their cooking practices, making it easier for Muslim travelers to find delicious and permissible meals.

Pet Policy at Chan Living

Chan Living has a clear policy regarding pets: service animals are not allowed. This means that guests cannot bring their pets, including service animals, to the property. This policy is important for guests who may have allergies or sensitivities to animals, ensuring a comfortable environment for all visitors.

Travelers planning to bring service animals should make alternative arrangements or select accommodation that explicitly permits them. It is always advisable to confirm the pet policy directly with the hotel when making a reservation if this is a critical factor for your travel plans. This ensures there are no surprises upon arrival.

Check-in and Check-out Information

Upon arriving at Chan Living, you can proceed with check-in from 14:00 onwards. This standard afternoon check-in time allows the hotel staff ample opportunity to prepare your room after the previous guest's departure, ensuring it is clean and ready for your arrival. When you check in, you will likely need to present a valid identification document, such as your MyKad or passport, and possibly a credit card for any incidental charges.

If you happen to arrive earlier than 14:00, you can inquire at the reception if your room is ready. In some cases, if the room has already been prepared, they might allow an early check-in. If not, you can usually store your luggage with the hotel staff and begin exploring the local area or relax in the common areas until your room is available. This flexibility helps in managing your travel schedule.

The check-out time at Chan Living is before 10:00. This morning check-out allows the hotel to commence cleaning and preparation for incoming guests efficiently. If you require a later check-out, it is best to arrange this with the reception in advance. Depending on the hotel's occupancy, late check-out might be possible, sometimes for an additional fee. If a late check-out isn't feasible, you can typically arrange to store your luggage after checking out, giving you more time to enjoy Tawau before your departure.

Your Travel Guide to Tawau as a Malaysian Traveler

How to Get to Tawau from Kuala Lumpur and Major Malaysian Cities

Traveling to Tawau from Kuala Lumpur and other major Malaysian cities is most efficiently done by air. Several airlines operate flights to Tawau Airport (TWU), offering a convenient way to reach Sabah's east coast. Flight durations typically range from 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on whether there are layovers. Malaysian travelers can often find competitive fares, especially when booking in advance or during promotional periods.

For those who prefer overland travel or are embarking on a longer journey through Borneo, bus services are available, though this is a significantly longer and less direct route. Buses from cities like Kota Kinabalu to Tawau can take upwards of 8-10 hours. While generally cheaper than flying, the extended travel time might not be ideal for shorter trips. You can book flight tickets easily on Traveloka for a quicker journey.

Driving to Tawau is also an option for those already in Sabah, particularly from cities like Kota Kinabalu. The journey involves navigating well-maintained highways and rural roads. Toll costs can vary, but for a rough estimate, budget around RM 50-100 for tolls on a one-way trip from Kota Kinabalu, with the drive taking approximately 7-9 hours. This option offers flexibility for exploring the region at your own pace.

Best Time to Visit Tawau

Tawau experiences a tropical rainforest climate, meaning it is generally warm and humid throughout the year. The best time to visit for most Malaysian travelers, particularly those interested in outdoor activities and island hopping, is during the drier months, which typically fall between March and October. During this period, rainfall is less frequent, and the seas are generally calmer, making it ideal for diving, snorkeling, and beach activities.

The period from November to February often sees more rainfall, characteristic of the monsoon season in this region. While you can still visit during these months, be prepared for potential rain showers that might interrupt outdoor plans. However, the off-peak season can sometimes offer lower prices on accommodation and flights, which might appeal to budget-conscious travelers.

Ultimately, Tawau is a destination that can be enjoyed year-round. The consistent warm temperatures mean that even during the wetter months, the rain often comes in short, heavy bursts, and you can still find plenty of sunshine. For those prioritizing clear skies and calm seas for water sports, aiming for the March to October window is advisable.

Food and Dining Near Tawau — What Malaysian Travelers Must Try

Tawau, like much of Sabah, offers a delightful culinary landscape influenced by Malay, Chinese, and indigenous Sabahan flavors. A must-try is the fresh seafood, given its coastal location. Grilled fish, butter prawns, and sweet and sour squid are common and delicious options found in many local restaurants. These dishes showcase the freshness of the catch from the Celebes Sea.

Another local specialty you should seek out is Hinava, a traditional Kadazan-Dusun dish. It's essentially a raw fish salad, typically made with mackerel or tuna, marinated in lime juice, ginger, chili, and onions. The citrus "cooks" the fish, creating a tangy and refreshing appetizer that’s a true taste of Sabah. Many local eateries in Tawau will serve this authentic dish.

For a taste of familiar Malaysian comfort food with a Sabahan twist, try the local versions of Nasi Lemak or Mee Goreng. You might also find unique noodle dishes or rice preparations that are specific to the region. Don't forget to sample local fruits like durian (in season) or tarap, a fruit with a unique aroma and sweet taste. Exploring the local markets and hawker centers is the best way to discover these culinary treasures.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Tawau

The culture in Tawau is a blend of various ethnic groups, including Malay, Chinese, and indigenous communities like the Bajau and Suluk. Respect for local customs is appreciated. When visiting religious sites, such as mosques, it's important to dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees. Malaysians are generally accustomed to diverse cultural practices, but a polite and considerate approach is always best.

Safety in Tawau is generally good, with low crime rates in tourist areas. However, as with any travel, it's wise to take standard precautions: be aware of your surroundings, avoid displaying excessive wealth, and secure your belongings. For emergencies, the national emergency number is 999, which connects you to police, ambulance, and fire services.

For convenience during your travels, several apps are highly recommended for Malaysian travelers. Grab is essential for e-hailing transportation within Tawau and surrounding areas. The MySejahtera app is still useful for health declarations and information. For payments, ensure you have your Touch 'n Go eWallet or other preferred mobile payment options ready, as many local businesses accept them.
