This was hands down our favorite night of the trip so far. We booked the Machiya Superior room and it was such a special experience. The traditional ryokan style made it feel unique and very Kyoto, but it was also incredibly comfortable. The futons were way more comfortable than we expected as westerners who’ve never experienced them. The heated tatami floors made the whole space feel unbelievably cozy. After long days out exploring, coming back to that warm floor was honestly amazing. We also loved the little private garden, it made the space feel calm and tucked away from everything. The location worked really well for us. We mostly grabbed taxis and everything was quick and easy to get to. Small detail, but important: the western-style pillows were great (better than our previous hotel, honestly). You can tell they’ve put real thought into comfort. We would absolutely stay here again. If you’re looking for a traditional Kyoto stay that still feels comfortable and relaxing, this is it.

Wonderful quiet location. An easy walk to many areas. We had a three person room and it was comfortable and clean. We had a washer/ dryer in our room but it took a very long time to run a cycle. We should’ve used the laundry on the first floor. We could hear our neighbors at some point but it was never to the point where we could not sleep. The staff was very kind and helpful with our many questions. We would definitely stay here again!

This was a beautiful hotel! We stayed at some big hotels in Tokyo and wanted a smaller place to stay in Kyoto that reflected Japanese architecture. I found this hotel on Expedia and booked it and so glad I did! The hotel was beautiful with tradition Japanese look and feel but with all the modern amenities. The kids slept on mattresses in a screened off room and loved it. The front desk staff were all lovely, and the free washer and dryer were a big plus. We also had breakfast for W days
